Mr Farr's Reflection

Deputy Principal

Things that matter most must never be at the mercy of things which matter least.
Goethe

Hello families and welcome to Week 6 of Term 3.

We have discovered recently that the shower in our ensuite has been leaking.  Water has been going under the shower panel, spilling over the shower base and has rotted the timber in the wall, under the base and in the bedroom on the other side.  The amount of mould that we have found is ridiculous - it’s in the timber, the plasterboard, the carpet - the list goes on!

This shower debacle has been causing me a lot of stress and frustration, which unfortunately manifests itself as dropping the ball around the house, procrastinating and generally not being the person my family needs me to be.  There is also a direct correlation between the discovery of our bathroom issues and my increase in screen time on my phone!  Stress for me is almost like a shut off switch - it blocks out what I genuinely need to deal with and I simply ignore it!  Suffice to say, I don't feel I've been the best version of myself lately.

When I’m not the person my family needs me to be it in turn causes stress for them.  My children don’t receive the attention or time with me they want and need, nor does my wife.  In fact my wife is left to pick up the slack that I’ve dropped!  I become irritated, quick tempered and disengaged.  This in turn creates a feeling of guilt, which in turn becomes a self fulfilling prophecy - I can’t do that, I’m too tired, I can’t do anything about this, I'm not a very good Dad, I'm a crappy husband etc - so I live out exactly what I'm thinking!

It is curious that I have become acutely aware of my behaviour, what’s causing it and how it is effecting others, yet I’m struggling to change the 'challenging' behaviour that I am conscious of!  It’s a reactive approach where I’m effectively focusing (worrying, becoming anxious about, stressing over) on things that I cannot necessarily control, instead of focusing on what I can control and actively doing something about it.

Stephen Covey suggests reframing our thinking and language from reactive to proactive to help shift our attitudes:
Reactive Language
There’s nothing I can do.
That’s just the way I am.
He makes me so mad.
They won’t allow that.
I have to do that.
I can’t.
I must.
If only.
Proactive Language

Let’s look at our alternatives.
I can choose a different approach.
I control my own feelings.
I can create an effective presentation.
I will choose an appropriate response.
I choose.
I prefer.
I will.

This may simply be my personal reflection and the vast majority of you may not connect with this at all, but I wonder if there’s a challenge here for all of us as parents, husbands and wives: In our relationships (with our families, with our colleagues, between school and home etc) are we being reactive or proactive?  Are we actively trying to change our own behaviours to have a better outcome for others and in turn, for ourselves?  Through this, we begin to show love for others because we begin to give of ourselves.

Are we helping our children to learn, through our own example, that giving of ourselves is a way to live out the value of love, which in turn creates within us and others the feeling of love?

I hope you find something here worthwhile pondering for the week!

Regards,

SunSmart Policy - Hats required from 1st September - 30th April
Late last year we reviewed our SunSmart Policy. The purpose of this Policy is to establish guidelines for the school, employees, parents and volunteers to comply with the School Sun Protection Policy based on recommendations made by Cancer Council Tasmania.

Please see the extract below:
Over-exposure to UV (ultraviolet) rays causes sunburn, skin damage and increased risk of skin cancer. Inappropriate sun exposure in the first 18 years of life contributes significantly to the lifetime risk of developing skin cancer.  Schools can play a significant role toward reducing the life time risk of skin cancer.
The sun protection policy has been developed to ensure that all students, teachers and the school community are protected from skin damage caused by harmful UV radiation from the sun.In Tasmania, the UV is 3 and above from September to April and safe sun exposure for vitamin D (May to August). Therefore, schools need to implement sun protection measures from the beginning of the school year until the end of April and again from the beginning of September until the end of the school year. Implementing sun protection measures throughout Terms 1 and 4 only is insufficient to protect against UVR risks.

Therefore from the 1st September - 30th April staff and students will be required to wear Sun Hats. Sunscreen is also provided for staff and students to use.

2021 Tasmanian Schools Triathlon Challenge (Grades 3-6)

Merseylink Bus Safety
Merseylink have designed a Bus Safety Brochure, which includes tips on bus safety, safety rules, riding the bus, exiting the bus and tips for parents to encourage and assist students becoming aware of the importance of safety while using their services.  It is essential that children and parents understand the importance of safety both as a passenger on the bus and as a pedestrian around the bus.
