Mrs seagar's Reflection

principal

“The world exists for everyone, because all of us were born with the same dignity. Differences of colour, religion, talent, place of birth or residence, and so many others, cannot be used to justify the privileges of some over the rights of all. As a community, we have an obligation to ensure that every person lives with dignity and has sufficient opportunities for his or her integral development.”
Pope Francis, On Fraternity and Social Friendship  [
Fratelli Tutti], no. 118

I know from my experiences and observations at Our Lady of Lourdes that we are people that we show respect for the dignity of all.

The dignity of every person, independent of ethnicity, creed, gender, sexuality, age or ability, is the foundation of Catholic Social Teaching. No human being should have their dignity or freedom compromised. Poverty, hunger, oppression and injustice make it impossible to live a life commensurate with this dignity.
Picture

The Catholic social teaching principle of human dignity is about understanding that each of us is made in God’s image. Every person has an innate human dignity no one can take away. I greet the students at every assembly as ‘my good people’ for they have been made in the image and likeness of God. Human dignity is given freely to all human beings; whether saint or sinner, imprisoned or freed, powerful or marginalised. Our common humanity requires that we respect and uphold the dignity of each and every human being. All our other rights and responsibilities flow from this dignity. The idea that each life has value is shared with International Human Rights which are also universal, inviolable and inalienable.

At Our Lady of Lourdes I see the community living out the respect of everyone’s dignity on a daily basis and when students err we remind and teach them this invaluable life belief.

Some quotes sourced at https://www.caritas.org.nz/catholic-social-teaching/human-dignity

So how do we show dignity to all and this is what I see in our community:
  • Treating people with dignity by showing respect even if you disagree with them.
  • Seeing the  world through their eyes, especially the marginalised within our community.
  • Listening  with all senses, so we seek to understand others.
  • Ask and explain why and engage in conversation to hear other view points and beliefs.
  • Offer options, let the other person choose.
  • Give opportunity to reconsider ourselves and others.

Thank you for offering everyone you interact with the generosity of dignity.

God bless

Carol

You, our school parents have voted overwhelmingly (78.4%) to change the uniform to the Sports Uniform full time from 2025.  There were 255 replies to the survey over the last few weeks.  I thank you for your contributions and being able to hear and recognise your voice in this decision for the school.  It is indeed a change and a change in response to a need.

Alongside this change we will provide a skort for the girls, a new fleecy 1/2 zip polo and move towards black sports shoes and compulsory purchase of our school bag with logo. There will be a 2 year change over period to honour those families that currently have the formal uniform as well as honouring the current stock with Midford Clothing, which will be placed on sale shortly.

We will promote the Sports Uniform via a brochure from Midford, displays in the Admin Area and via FB, newsletter etc.

A strict policy will be implemented  to ensure that students are wearing this correct Sports Uniform, with notes going home if not in the nominated uniform.  When it is worn well it looks very smart.

Below is the final summary graph of the results from the parent survey:

RE Reflection
This week at Whole School Prayer, we listened to The Beatitudes which Jesus gives his disciples in the Gospel of Matthew. The Beatitudes are ‘guidelines to live by.’ They are a way for us to ‘be’ and they are ‘attitudes’ that we should all strive to embrace, in order to let God’s light shine through us.

One of the verses serves as a call to peace.  Here, Jesus says that those who make peace are blessed.
God wants His children to make peace. A peacemaker is someone who works to make things right, to help reconcile differences, to make peace for others. Making peace requires taking action. We know that we need to stand up for peace and Jesus says specifically in this Beatitude that a peacemaker will be rewarded with the title of being called a “child of God.”

The day before the beginning of the Olympic Games, the Olympic Mass of Peace was held. During this mass, Pope Francis brought our attention to the Olympic motto; Citius, Altius, Fortius - faster, higher, stronger. And this year, the Olympic Committee added ‘Communiter’ - which means ‘together’. As we watch the Olympic Games unfold, we will see Olympians be faster, go higher and be stronger than others that have come before them, but this year, we also acknowledge that our Olympians will do this together; recognising our differences and fostering peace in solidarity and being united with the world.

Pope Francis said:  I …wish that the Paris Olympics will be an occasion for all who come from all countries of the world to discover and appreciate each other, to dismantle prejudices, to foster esteem where there is contempt and mistrust, and friendship where there is hatred. During this time of the Olympic Games, let us remember that sports can be a way to unite us, they are a time for us to learn about other countries and cultures to learn about our differences and develop understanding of each other.

The "true gold medal" at the upcoming Olympic and Paralympic Games goes to everything that helps the global community be more welcoming and accepting of all people.

Students were reminded that when they are out in the playground, the teachers do not hand out gold medals to the team that ‘wins’ the basketball or soccer game, or the winner of round ups. The true winner is being with friends, having fun, and learning to welcome and accept others and their differences, into our games.

Let us always work for peace in our families, our classrooms, our school, our community, and our world.

Student Pick up on Stewart Street
Any students who are picked up at the Stewart Street side of the school MUST NOT cross Stewart Street to be picked up.
Students must stay on the school side of the street and parents pick up from this side only.
It is not safe for our students to cross Stewart Street during school hours and especially at the end and beginning of the day.
There is no crossing on Stewart Street, and the Council will not provide one, so parents please drive up on the school side of Stewart Street to pick up your child. Alternatively, use the Pick-Up Zone on Steele Street.
We thank you in anticipation of your cooperation with Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Primary School.

Car Parks at OLOL
We have inquired with the Devonport City Council whether we can have more disabled carparks at Our Lady of Lourdes,  We put forward a case with the number of grandparents and parents with a disability, but have been informed that we have the correct ratio for the area and community we serve.  In light of this, can we ensure that only the correct use of disabled parks is adhered to and maybe staggering pick up times between 2:55 and 3:15 will assist with this congestion.

Personal Sport Equipment
Our Lady of Lourdes provides lots of balls and sports' equipment for students to play with at lunchtimes.  We ask that students do not bring in their own sports equipment.
Only toys needed for classroom regulation may be brought to school.

Drop Off and Pick Up
In order to avoid congestion at the end of the day, please be reminded, that students are not to wait for collection at the main office.
We would appreciate families accessing our school by the 2 main external entry/exit points, rather than the main office doors.
  • Main gates from Steele Street Carpark
  • Side gate near Parish Hall
We thank you and your children for your cooperation.

Pick Up Zone
A reminder to families to drive around the block if Steele Street entrance to the school is full with parked cars from 2:50pm. Staff are on duty to 3:20 enabling pick at any time within 30 mins after school.

Morning Entry to Classes
A reminder to families, when entering the classrooms of a morning Prep - Grade 2 are to use the front blue sliding door and Grades 3 - 6 use the back oval doors.

Nut & Fish Aware School
OLOL is a Nut & Fish Aware School and encourage parents to refrain from using these products in school lunches.

These foods can contain fish:

  • Fried rice, spring rolls and paella with fish specifically.
  • Dishes that are often prepared with fish-based sauces, like oyster sauce.
  • Sushi.
  • Salad dressings.
  • Sauces, like steak and Worcestershire.
  • Seafood soups and broths.
  • Spreads like taramasalata

Breakfast Club
Breakfast club is held in the school canteen each school day from 8am until 8:40am.
The first meal of the day is a chance to get the energy we need to learn, play and stay healthy. While most Australian children eat breakfast, skipping breakfast is still common.  Children who eat breakfast have better school attendance, better academic performance and improved wellbeing. Eating breakfast is associated with better dietary and physical activity behaviours.
Everyone is welcome to Breakfast Club.

Picking up Children Early
Our Lady of Lourdes reminds parents to provide advance notice if you are picking up your child early. An email to [email protected] is the best communication method. Phone call is also an option. It allows for advance preparation if the office staff are given significant advance notice as organising students to leave class or specialist lessons can take some time.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Playing in the Playground After School
It is our school expectation, that if parents choose to allow their children to play in our playground after school. It is their responsibility to supervise and support them to be Respectful, Responsible and Safe through direct behaviour support of their own child and modelling of appropriate adult behaviour.  Effectively, you are responsible for your child after you have collected them at the end of the day. Our school gates will continue to be locked at 3:30pm each day.  We do ask that you please ensure you have left our school grounds by then.

School Gates
The school Steele Street gates are now locked from 3:30 pm each day.
If requiring any assistance after this time, please come to the Stewart Street school entrance and knock for assistance.
