“Self regulation is a skill, so let’s teach it.”
genmindful.com
Welcome everyone, to Week 2.

As some of you may already be aware, our Wingani (Calm) space is now in a new location in the upstairs part of our school.

Wingani is a dedicated space designed to meet the sensory needs of students. This occurs through either the reduction of sensory overload or the stimulation of senses.

Our feelings and energy fluctuate throughout the day quite a bit. On days we have big, explosive and overwhelming emotions we probably also have moments we feel drained, tired, numb or zoned out. Each of us have a “Window of Tolerance” (Dr Dan Siegal), or a certain level of arousal we can navigate skillfully. When we are within this window, we thrive. We are able to learn, communicate, play and relate well to ourselves and others.

When we move outside of this window, we can become hyper-aroused (too much) or hypo-aroused (too little). We have trouble registering our feelings, responding with emotions appropriate to context and regulating those responses in social situations.

In children who are hyper-aroused, we see difficulty focusing or concentrating, irritability, anger, disruptive outbursts, worry and anxiety, poor sleep hygiene, or increased startle response.
Strategies for children in Hyperarousal:
  • Deep breathing
  • Jumping on a trampoline
  • Weighted blanket
  • Shaking/ stomping
  • Calming music
  • Heavy lifting
  • Stress balls/ squeeze balls
  • Rolling over a fitball
  • Dual drawing - co-regulator begins a drawing and the child does the next bit and then alternates – promotes connection
  • Bilateral scribbling to beat of music- having a pencil in both hands (2 different colours) and scribbling to music.
Hypo-arousal results from the freeze response and is characterized by a sense of shutting down, disconnecting, exhaustion, depression and numbness. When a child is experiencing hypo-arousal, we may notice flat affect, weariness, withdrawal, lack of emotion and inability to learn, relate or engage.
Strategies for children in Hypoarousal:
  • Dancing and music
  • Climbing
  • Bouncing on fitball
  • Fidget toys
  • Sand play
  • Painting
  • Feeling/noticing the soles of the feet on the floor
  • Swinging and rocking
  • Star jumps

The Wingani space has been designed to allow students an opportunity to avoid or recover from sensory overload or in some cases provide tactile, auditory or visual stimulation. Each individual’s needs vary with the aim of the sensory space being to support students in returning to and expanding their Window of Tolerance which in turn, allows them to participate and engage to their fullest potential.
Over time, the aim is for students to recognise what different emotions and feeling feel like within their body and to expand their capability to tolerate these feelings. The more they practise this the more they expand their Window of Tolerance.

Please enjoy your virtual tour of the Wingani space.

Kind regards

Eve

OLOL Board 2022
Welcome parents, staff and students to the 2022 school year.

I wish to offer staff a sincere thank you for preparing classrooms for learning on campus and for the school for offering a learning at home program for those students who require it. Although we cannot predict the outcomes of living with Covid, personally I am please with how the school and Catholic Education Covid plan is being implemented. I thank both staff and parents for their resilience, flexibility and ongoing partnership with their child’s learning journey.

I would also like to offer an apology to past OLOL School Board member and Treasurer Pettina Borlini. Pettina volunteered 6 years on the OLOL School Board and I omitted her name and contribution from the school 2021 magazine as an out going member. Pettina’s contributions to the OLOL community should not have been overlooked. Thank you for your time and skills during your position on the Board Pettina.

If parents have any questions, queries or feedback regarding your child’s education or the School in general, please ask a member of the Board to take it to the next meeting. I look forward to a positive 2022.

Literate Learners for Life
Every Student, Every Subject, Every Year

Literate Learners for Life is Catholic Education Tasmania’s commitment to developing the literacy and vocabulary skills of every student, in every subject, every year.

Launched prior to the 2022 school year with a series of three system development days, we believe that this whole-system science-based approach to literacy, in particular the teaching of phonics, will set our students up for success in not just literacy, but all areas of life.

Noting the unique context presented in Tasmania, including low rates of adult functional literacy and declining NAPLAN scores across the system, CET recognised the need for a dedicated literacy strategy to address these concerns.

Initial Lit Program for Prep - Grade 2
As part of Catholic Education, Tasmania's literacy strategy 'Literate Learners for Life' Catholic Primary schools across the state are implementing Initial Lit.

"InitiaLit is an evidence-based whole-class literacy program providing all children with the essential core knowledge and strong foundations to become successful readers and writers. InitiaLit is a three-year program, covering the first three years of school (Foundation to Year 2)." (https://multilit.com/programs/initialit/)

As we begin our implementation of this resource, as part of the broader CET Literacy Strategy, staff from across our school - Kinder, Prep, Grade 1 and Grade 2 teachers, members of our Targeted Teaching Team and our Literacy Practice Leader - have been conducting screeners to identify where each child from Prep to Grade 2 are at in regards to their literacy development.

The screener involves students reading a range of:
  • Regular words
  • Non-words
  • Extension words
  • Passages
  • Tricky words
  • Spelling words
and undertake
  • Sentence dictation.
  • Letter-sound knowledge activities
  • Reading words and sentences

Educators' administering the screener collect data on students' letter-sound knowledge, ability to recall common words, their ability to apply their letter-knowledge to decode unfamiliar words and general reading ability through a range of activities and strategies.

We encourage you to discuss your child's screener at our upcoming parent teacher evening.
