Student support coordinator

“No significant learning occurs without a significant relationship.”
James Comer

Welcome everyone to week two.

At Our Lady of Lourdes we provide a context for learning through which children organise and make sense of their social worlds, as they engage actively with people, objects and representations.

Belonging, Being & Becoming – The Early Years Framework (EYLF) is part of the National Quality Framework for early childhood education and care. The vision of the Framework is that “all children experience learning that is engaging and builds success for life.”

The Learning outcomes of The EYLF are as follows:
Children have a strong sense of identity, Children are connected with and contribute to their world, Children have a strong sense of wellbeing, Children are confident and involved learners and Children are effective communicators.

As well as five learning outcomes, within the ELYF there are also five principles that guide educators. The first being; Secure, respectful and reciprocal relationships. There are numerous reasons why this is the first principle incorporated within the EYLF and why the nurturing of positive interactions and consistent emotional support is vital in supporting a child’s skills, knowledge and awareness of positive interactions to grow.

Over the weekend, I stumbled upon an inspiring TED Talk which I feel acknowledges just how important human connection is during the birth to five phase. During her talk, seven-year-old Molly Wright explores the possibilty that a simple game of peek-a-boo could change the world.

I highly recommend you take 7.26 minutes to listen to one of the youngest-ever TED speakers as she highlights the benefits of play on lifelong learning, behaviour and well-being, and shares effective strategies to help all kids thrive by the age of five.

How Every Child can Thrive by Five Molly Wright

Molly’s TED Talk was produced in collaboration with Minderoo Foundation as an educational tool for parents and caregivers around the world. This organisation is supported by UNICEF and driven by inclusion, collaboration and, most importantly, kindness. And as we all know, the world could always do with a little more kindness.

May your week be filled with meaningful, joyous connections.

Kind regards,

Eve

Soccer Canteen Roster - Saturday 7th August
Our Lady of Lourdes is rostered on to complete Canteen Duty at Soccer on 7 August.  One helper per nominated team is required as per the roster and the teams allocated time slots.  Please complete the Google Form at the top of this Newsletter to offer your support.  It is important to note that Our Lady of Lourdes is the most represented school in the Devonport Junior Soccer competition and as such, we should be able to provide plenty of support in the canteen on our rostered day.  We encourage you to support your child's club and put your name forward.  Thank you to those parents that have volunteered to help in the canteen, it is much appreciated.  At the moment we have only filled 4 time slots!

Learning@Home

We once again find ourselves in unusual times here in Tasmania.  We can’t help but have one eye on the mainland, paying close attention to the spread of the delta variant of COVID-19 across NSW, Victoria, Queensland and SA.  However, at the time of this Newsletter being published there is more positive news out of Victoria and Queensland with restrictions being eased.  I’m sure that reading the above sends shivers up some of our spines!  Simply thinking back to the 2 weeks during 2020 where our school, along with the others across the North West, were engaged in Learning@Home may bring back feelings of stress, anxiety and concern.  It is important to acknowledge though, that for some of us Learning@Home was a positive experience for children, parents and families.  Learning@Home was and is context specific - each family is different and therefore each family's experience of Learning@Home was different.  The feedback that was provided by a high number of families to our school in June last year has been invaluable to us in discerning how we could improve our teaching and learning, and support for children and their families should Learning@Home happen again.

To maintain true partnerships we do our utmost to ensure there is clear, consistent communication between school and home.  With this in mind we thought it timely to name up what we are doing now to prepare for Learning@Home if it were to eventuate.  We are effectively planning for and finding solutions to an outcome that may very well not occur, but it is better to be prepared and meet challenges head on.

IF Learning@Home were to come into place:

  • Catholic Education Tasmania K-10 schools will remain open to any children that need to access them unless there are specific directives in place excluding students / families due to quarantine or other restrictions that may be associated with COVID-19 health & safety protocols.  We do not know nor can we predict what these may look like at this time.
  • Those students that attend school during any Learning@Home period will engage with Learning@Home at School via the online learning platform under the supervision of school staff.  As such, whether a child is at home or at school, we will be providing for them on the same basis.
  • The online learning platforms that we will use are Educa in Kinder and Seesaw across P - 6.
  • We expect children to engage with the provided learning opportunities each day via Seesaw / Educa as best they can and in a manner that best suits each family.
  • Not all children will complete all work due to each family's context being different - THIS IS OK!
  • No more than 40% of each day should be spent consistently engaging with a screen.
  • All children will be automatically signed in as 'Attending School via Learning@Home' on Compass each day unless parents notify their child's teacher via email that their child is unwell and will not be completing Learning@Home that day.
  • We encourage you and your children to engage in activities aside from the Learning@Home platform such as reading, playing board games, crafting, painting, drawing, building cubbies / forts / Lego, talking to each other as much as possible!.
  • Teachers are not 'on tap' during Learning@Home; please constrain emails to teachers between the hours of 9:00am and 4:00pm each day.

It would be worthwhile discussing how you and your family might navigate Learning@Home if restrictions / a lockdown was put in place by the government.  The more we communicate about things that create stress and anxiety, the more easily we can deal with them.

Our children's wellbeing, growth and learning are the focus of all staff here at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School.  If Learning@Home were to eventuate we trust that we will continue to work in partnership to ensure our children, and each other, can navigate it as successfully as possible.

If you have any questions, suggestions or comments regarding any of the above, please speak to me directly or email me.

Regards,

Stu
