Are you using compass?

As you are aware Catholic Education Tasmania has moved to a new student record system called Compass. The Compass Program allows us to communicate with families directly through the Compass Parent Portal. The Compass Parent Portal is now our main communication tool. All parents will need to download the Compass App and ensure they are able to login.
Thank you to those families who have already taken up the Compass App and are successfully engaging with it and our school.

Mr Farr's Reflection

Deputy principal

I will sing to the Lord all my life; I will sing praise to my God as long as I live.

PSALM 104:33

Welcome to Week 8!  (It rolled up on us quickly didn't it?)

Passion Song is one of my favourite songs for the Easter Season.  It is written and recorded by Sean Carter, and is performed beautifully here (above) by our school choir of Grade 2 - 6 students.  The song resonates with me due to its simplicity and wonderful storytelling.  The narrator, in the role of one of Jesus' disciples that was with him during Holy Week, retells the Easter story simply, but so vividly and with such insight into what it was like baring witness to these events that one can't help but be moved.  It's melody rises and falls with the accompanying guitar crescendoing and softening to create drama and emotion within the song.

As I'm sure most of you are aware, I love music.  I love playing guitar, harmonica, piano, drums, listening to music and singing (not very well as evidenced by the above video).  As such I connect with this song.  I connect with all of those things I have listed above.  It is through my connection to this song that I am able to engage more deeply in Christ's message and find a way to engage with my own faith, knowledge and understanding of Jesus.

Our teachers strive to help our students make personal connections to Jesus' story and to His message.  They teach stories Jesus told in ways that can be easily understood by young children.  They create an environment that openly supports each child's wonderings about Jesus' life, story and message, and explore these using scripture and prayer as a roadmap, or template.  We are incredibly blessed to have Mrs Belinda Downward as our Religious Education Coordinator who leads all teachers in our school to deliver our Religious Education curriculum through engaging, explicit and invitational pedagogies that meet the needs of our community and create opportunities for our students to make a connection to His message.  Our students regularly respond to stories about Jesus, or stories that He told through written or recorded reflections, through retellings using role plays and Apps such as Puppet Pals, they craft 'I wonder . . .' questions in response to Godly Play sessions and identify ways in which others have lived out Jesus' message as found in particular parables or Scripture stories.  They engage each day in classroom prayer and explore prayer as a way to focus on what is truly important to them.

As we look toward Palm Sunday, the beginning of Holy Week, our students will be doing exactly this: making connections to the events of Holy Week and therefor connecting with Jesus' message.  Through classroom learning opportunities, Whole School Prayer and the wonderful liturgies that Mrs Downward has prepared, the invitation is being extended to our students in an engaging way that meets them where they're at.

During this coming week I invite you to find a way to connect with the Easter Story, and perhaps, through this connection, be moved toward action in your own life.  Maybe there is a song that helps you reflect on your own faith during this season?

The above one is a pretty good starting point.

Enjoy the week ahead,

Stu

Childhood Brain Development with Allison Davies: Parent Session
An invite to all OLOL Parents and Carers. If you wish to know more about the brain development of your child then join us on: March 25th in the OLOL Gym from 6:30pm – 8:30pm to hear nationally recognised Allison Davies present on neurodiversity.  A brain that can function at its best is a brain less likely to experience anxiety, overwhelm and overload, and a brain less likely to sit in survival mode. A brain that can function at its best means a child who is less likely to instigate harmful, risky or detrimental behaviours.

St Brendan-Shaw College Information Night
St Brendan-Shaw College will be holding its annual Information Night on Thursday 25th March. The night will commence at 7:00 pm and will give prospective families the opportunity to view the College in every capacity. If you are unable to attend the Information Night but would be interested in an enrolment pack, please contact St Brendan-Shaw College.
For more information click here.

Psychology Cafe
Psychology Caffe are pleased to offer an opportunity for parents/carers to bring questions and learn about responding to their child’s difficult behaviours and how to best support their child’s development. Our No Drama Discipline program is a series of 8 Thursday evening sessions, starting Thursday 15th April from 6:45pm-8pm at 22 Kind Edward Street Ulverstone. We will also be taking expressions of interest for future groups. This parenting program provides parents/carers with skills to help their child manage their emotions and behaviour. Brain based parenting aims to facilitate healthy attachment and brain development in children, so they grow up to be emotionally intelligent and resilient adults.

Fencing Works at OLOL
OLOL will be completing the final part of our school fencing project in order to be able to ensure student safety. The black mesh fencing 2.3m high will continue around the basketball courts and between the school and the church. All entry to OLOL via Steele Street will be up the main pathway.  These works are expected to take place in the First Term holidays.

Emergency Practice
In the coming weeks there will be a fire drill practice for staff and students.  This is an unannounced drill to test our response to a potential emergency situation. The school will be locked for the duration of the fire drill. The practice will be as least disruptive to student learning as possible.
