Are you using compass?

As you are aware Catholic Education Tasmania has moved to a new student record system called Compass. The Compass Program allows us to communicate with families directly through the Compass Parent Portal. The Compass Parent Portal is now our main communication tool. All parents will need to download the Compass App and ensure they are able to login.
Thank you to those families who have already taken up the Compass App and are successfully engaging with it and our school.

Mr farr's Reflection

More than a word, reconciliation takes action.
National reconciliation week

Over the long weekend my family, just as many other families from OLOL, was involved in a Basketball Tournament in Launceston.  Both my children were playing in the tournament whilst my wife had Team Manager duties and I had Coaching duties.  This was our first tournament being this heavily involved in so many aspects.

Logistically we needed to have Claire in Deloraine for two games, Henry at Elphin Stadium and I was required at the Silverdome.  We simply couldn’t make it work and stick as a family.  Those that have been doing this for a while and are old hats at it I’m sure are smirking right now thinking ‘Yep, welcome to basketball!’

In the end my wife took Claire to Deloraine for her games, I was dropped at the Silverdome for most of the day and Henry spent the majority of his day with a friend from his team and their family.  We were frustrated by it, however we simply had to suck it up!  Our frustration came from our desire to watch, be part of and celebrate with both of our children during their games.  Give them encouragement before, support and cheer for them during, debrief after and effectively, be part of it as much as possible.

One of the most positive things to come out of this logistical nightmare was that Henry had to be independent and we, as parents, had to let go.  We had to trust Henry that he’d be able to get himself organised, be emotionally mature enough to deal with challenges during each game and appropriately and respectfully deal with wins / losses after each game without mum or dad by his side to debrief with him.  It was an opportunity for him to step up and be independent and responsible.  For us as parents, it was an opportunity to trust our son to live out the skills and values we have tried to instil in him and gradually release some responsibility to our young child.

To be very honest, we weren’t overly comfortable with it, not because we didn’t trust Henry or our family friends whom were looking after him, but simply because it required us to take a step back and not be as involved as we normally are.

When we did catch back up with each other we talked about the successes and challenges that Henry and Claire both experienced in the usual way - Did you have fun?  Did you make some good passes?  Score any goals?  Get any fouls? etc - and touched based with their coaches to see how they went / get some feedback, not to be helicopters but to make sure we were aware of anything that may have happened that we needed to talk to them about, boost their confidence or perhaps offer guidance.

It was wonderful to hear how proud our children were of their efforts on the basketball court.  And when we were able to watch their games, we did so with renewed joy, pride and gratitude for the opportunity to simply be there and watch.

For me our weekend was fantastic and made me realise just how lucky I am to be able to see my children engage in something they love, which in turn invigorates me with that same excitement.  I have read through some previous Newsletter pieces that I have written, particularly from 2015, where I was astutely aware of how much joy I took from simply spending time with my children playing Lego or having tea parties, which, coupled with my weekend experience, has made me consider whether I am appreciative of the opportunities I have to spend with my children, or do I just go through the motions?

If I’m communicating anything at all in this reflection, and I very well may not be, it’s how do we as parents take time to truly appreciate and see the joy in our children whilst engaged in something they love?  And when we do get a chance to witness this, are we aware of how that impacts our own wellbeing?

Enjoy your week,

Stu

Collection of Children
Can parents please make contact with the school if there are people, relatives or friends that are not permitted to collect children or if they come on site is a concern for families.

Reports
Student reports will be issued in Week 10, 29th June. Parent-Teacher meetings will be held on Thursday 1st July.

Australian Early Development Census
This year our school, along with thousands of others across the country will begin preparations for the fifth Australian Early Development Census (AEDC).
The AEDC gives us a national picture of the development, health and wellbeing of children in their first year of full-time school (Prep). Since 2009, the census results have helped communities, schools and governments plan services and develop better policies to target support for children and families.  Children don’t miss any class time, and parents/carers don’t need to supply schools with any new information for the census. The AEDC gives us data at a school and community level - it isn’t an assessment of individual children.
Some teachers have also noticed that completing the assessments made them more aware of the needs of individual children and the class as a whole and that the census results are useful in planning for transitions to Year 1 and developing class programs.
Participation in the AEDC is voluntary. Parents/carers don’t need to take any action unless they choose not to include their children in the census.
To find out more about the census and how communities are using the data to help children and families visit the AEDC website: www.aedc.gov.au or speak to your Prep child's teacher or Mr Farr.

Catholic Education Transportation Survey
We want to know how to improve student transport.
Please take five minutes to let us know what you think about how students get to and from school.
The review will also be looking at the attitudes families and students have towards bus transportation and reasons why they may or may not use bus transportation.
