Teaching your kids about online safety might be one of the most impactful safety measures you can take
Pandasecurity.com

Welcome everyone to Week 2,

Generation Z is more social than we, as their parents, have ever been. Our young people thrive on social interaction, and while this is part of growing up, social media platforms mean that this social interaction continues well after school hours.

While social media provides many benefits, such as giving students the chance to express themselves creatively, learning opportunities, and the chance to connect with others. Social media can also have a negative impact on students, both physically and mentally. It is incredibly addictive, and research shows that students who consistently spend time on social media can suffer from poor sleep, eye fatigue, negative body image, depression, anxiety, cyberbullying, and more. Our young people require guidance in remaining safe whilst navigating the online world.

So how can we support our young people on social media?

  • Keep an open dialogue with our children
  • Educate our children on the risks of Social Media
  • Follow Age Requirement Guidelines (please see the infographic below)
  • Set Ground Rules of Social Media use
  • Stay up to date on your child’s privacy settings
  • Consider products that help you monitor your child’s online activity
  • Utilise online cyberbullying resources (for further information).

The government’s esafety website provides a multitude of resources for educators, parents and young people as we navigate the world of social media together.

If there comes a time when reporting inappropriate content is necessary most platforms have a ‘report/block this person’ or ‘report/block this content’ function. Links to report or block users can be found below:

COVID-19 Update

COVID UPDATE - Term 3
  • The reinfection exclusion period has been reduced from 12 weeks to 28 days. People who have symptoms of COVID-19 within 28 days following their release from isolation do not need to test and isolate for 7 days.
  • Face masks are no longer required to be worn in schools, early childhood centres or on public transport unless the person is a close contact. Primary School students do not need to wear a face mask.
  • Students and staff may choose to wear a face mask whilst at school and will be supported in doing so.

Confirmed cases
Should a student or member of staff test positive for COVID-19 they must:
  • Isolate for a minimum of 7 days, provided outside the 28-day reinfection exclusion period.
  • Isolate for a further 3 days if they still have symptoms on day 7.
  • If test positive using a rapid antigen test, register the result with Public Health using their online declaration form or phone the Public Health Hotline 1800 671 738.
  • Notify household close contacts of the need to observe close contact requirements when
  • leaving their homes.
  • Notify the school of their positive test results.

Close contacts
Household close contacts of a confirmed case are no longer required to isolate at home. For a
close contact to leave home they must:
  • Not be symptomatic (must remain at home if they are)
  • Return a negative test each day before leaving home for the 7 days following their last contact with the confirmed case.

Colds and flu
Students/staff with cold or flu symptoms are required to stay home and test for two consecutive days.

If the person has twice tested negative on successive days for COVID-19 and their symptoms are mild e.g. a runny nose, there is no coughing or sneezing and, if a student they have indicated when asked that they feel well, then the person is permitted at school /workplace.

The wearing of a face mask by an adult with mild symptoms is encouraged.

Number of Positive Covid Cases in the school is currently 8.

Thank you for your support and co-operation.

Monday the 8th of August is the Feast Day of Mary MacKillop. Mary of the Cross MacKillop was an Australian woman who saw a need and did something about it through setting up schools for children who did not have access to education and could not afford to go to school. This Monday we remember our founding Sr Mary of the Cross MacKillop and the work she and her sisters carried out in founding our schools and offering equity to all through education.

First Eucharist Preparation Day
Thank you to everyone who attended last Sunday's Mass and preparation for Eucharist. Parents and children shared morning tea and had a sausage sizzle for lunch. During the session the parents listened to a presentation by Samuel Clear regarding his walk around the world for unity. Sam kept us all enthralled with his stories and recounts from his extraordinary experiences. Sam faced blizzards, deserts, scorpions, pumas and a whole lot more on his journey. Sam’s Book is in the library for loan if people are interested.

The Eucharistic Candidates worked with the 24:7 School Ministry Youth Group from Western Australia. The children participated in games, watched videos, and discussed the sacrament of Eucharist and the meaning of Eucharist which means ‘thanksgiving’.

At the conclusion of the session the children came out happy and excited about their experience. The children were enthusiastic to share their learning with the parent group and this week at school little gems are still continuing to be shared. All in all it was a great day.

Thoughts on the day:
Riley Webb: It was great and fun. We learnt that in Eucharist we adore, love, give thanks, ask and resolve our thoughts.
Xavier Hingston: We watched a video on a grape which was cut from a vine and died. It taught us that if we go way from Jesus we will wither and die.
Marlie Webb: I learnt that you grow bigger when you are on the vine and when we pray we grow closer to Jesus. When we share in the Eucharist at the Altar we are, adoring Jesus and God, loving, thanking, ask, resolve.

The students wrote prayers for receiving Jesus in the Eucharist.

Children's Book Week (Sunday 21st August - Friday 26th August)
To celebrate Children's Book Week there will be a book character 'dress-up day' on Thursday 25th August. Children can come to school dressed as their favourite book character.

Toys at School
We have had lots of lost toys at school, and very sad children. If your child is bringing a toy from home could the toy be named please. Explain to your child that the toy may get lost and not be found. It would be much better if toys stayed at home but we understand if your child needs a comfort toy.

Drink Bottles
Please ensure your child is coming to school daily with a drink bottle. We have had quite a lot of students over last term and last week especially who do not have or are not bringing drink bottles to school. Please make sure your child has their drink bottle with them each day as it is so important that your child stays hydrated.
