Mr farr's Reflection

Deputy Principal

Welcome to Term 2!

It has been great to see everyone back at school yesterday and today.  The smiles on our children and staff, listening to the stories of each others’ holidays and the joy of seeing our children engaged in learning and play throughout the day has been great to witness.  It truly makes coming back to school after a holiday break ‘easy’!

I was going to write something else about welcoming everyone back to Term 2, but I’ve changed a few things after watching the Jack Jumpers win last night!  Watching the Jack Jumpers last night was fantastic!  It was a great game that the JJs walked away from with a 3 point victory.  When they won I was certainly excited and was up and about on some of my messaging Apps, revelling in the same joy and sense of pride that my friends were sharing in.  Now, everyone loves a winner, and I’m sure that even those that haven’t watched a single game, nor follow / care for basketball, probably have a sense of pride that a team from Tassie, in their very first season, has just beaten the reigning champions to make it through to the Finals!  What a massive achievement!  One player in particular made me feel rather inspired, Josh Adams.  After having a rather difficult first half, he came out and finished with 30 points (highest score for the game), hit what was effectively the game sealer, and was voted the player of the match.  The resilience to bounce back from struggling at the beginning of the game to be the player of the match by the end of the game was truly inspiring.

Now, if you’ve read this far you’re probably wondering what’s the connection to starting back for Term 2?

I have a genuine sense of pride in being a member of the Our Lady of Lourdes School Community.  Yes I enjoy my holidays and believe every Educator in the country very much earns theirs, but I am always excited to return to school to be part of this community.  I am proud of the achievements that our children make, be they academic, social, sporting etc.  When they achieve their goals it truly is joyous to be part of, even if it is only in a small way.  I am proud to work with all of my colleagues; wonderful Educators whom give of themselves day in day out because they too, are invested in our children and our proud of each child’s achievements.

I am also proud of the resilience that our children show.  I witnessed it over the last two days in a number of our children whom had faced some adversity toward the end of last term in regards to behaviours and social challenges.  These children were here, positive, ready to go and committed to being the best versions of themselves.  For many of our students this mindset comes naturally, but for some, it is a challenge.  I witnessed the resilience of our children when we began our day with School Prayer for our Grades 3-6 students.  The singing and excitement on so many faces clearly told me that this was something they had missed over the past term.  After announcing that our students could play anywhere in the playground as of today and hearing the cheers echo through the corridors, it again showed the resilience of our children and reminded me how well they coped with the frustrations and restrictions that they have been faced with.

I am proud to be part of a school community where our relief Educators are seen in the eyes of staff, students and parents as part of our community, to the point that they are included in our staff photos.  I am proud to be part of a school community where our students have such amazing manners and respect that they simply wait outside in the cold, even though the doors are are accidentally left wide open, because they know that’s the right thing to do!  I am proud to be part of a community where students run to collect signs that had been left out in the rain because it is the right thing to do.  I am proud to be part of a community where grade 6 students are so welcoming to younger students that I quite literally witness the ‘biggest’ boy in our school playing basketball happily with one of the ‘smallest’ boys in our school respectfully, responsibly and safely.  What I am most proud of though, is that all of this, and so much more, is just ‘normal’.

This is the everyday 'stuff' that makes our school the place it is.  It’s the 'stuff' that’s easy to miss, but when we stop and really think about it, it’s rather wonderful.  It’s not necessarily a grand achievement like the Jack Jumpers win, but in my view, it is just as worthy of celebration and acknowledgement.

My hope for Term 2 is that you are able to truly see the small ‘stuff’, the easy to miss ‘stuff’ that is an everyday occurrence for your child and let them know just how proud of them you are for it.

Enjoy the term!

COVID-19 Update

Term 2 COVID Changes

  • The school is no longer required to inform families of COVID-19 cases in their child/children’s class or grade. This means we will no longer be sending out Compass Posts for COVID- 19 cases in the school.
  • The school will follow advice from Public Health on when to communicate to families in the case of an Outbreak.
  • We will continue to provide families with a weekly COVID-19 update in the school newsletter.

Close Contacts
Household close contacts of a confirmed case are no longer required to quarantine at home. For a close contact to leave home they must:
  • not be symptomatic (must remain at home if they are)
  • return a negative test each day before leaving home for the 7 days following their last contact with the confirmed case.
  • wear a face mask in all indoor settings when outside the home. Primary students deemed to be a household close contact will not be required to wear a mask when at school.
  • notify the School of their close contact status.
  • If they become symptomatic whilst at school to immediately return to their home.

Colds & Flu
If symptoms are mild e.g. a runny nose, there is no coughing, sneezing or a green runny nose and the person has twice tested negative on successive days for COVID-19 and the person has indicated, if asked, that they feel well then the person is permitted at school.

Provision of RATs
The school will provide 1 RATs to students when requested due to the person being symptomatic.
The school will provide 5 RATs to primary students, when they notify the school of household close contact status. Parents will need to source the additional 2 RATS for the 7 days testing as a household close contact.

We will continue to follow COVID Safe Behaviours

  • Stay away if unwell & take a RAT/PCR Test.
  • Wear a mask inside the school
  • Practice good hand hygiene, covering coughs & sneezes and remember to social distance.
  • Daily cleaning of high touch surfaces.
  • Exemption from testing for Covid 19; 12 weeks since person released from isolation for Covid 19.
  • Exemption from close contact for Covid 19; 12 weeks since person released from isolation for Covid 19.

This week we have had 5 positive COVID-19 test results in the school.

Thank you for your support and co-operation.

RE NEWs

Easter isn’t over…it has just begun! Easter continues and is celebrated for 50 days after Easter Sunday ending with Pentecost.
During this time Jesus appeared to his friends and followers talking to them and preparing them to go out and spread the good news of Jesus. The Emmaus story tells us that the disciples did not recognise Jesus and could not understand what Jesus was telling them. Sometimes things in our lives don’t make sense to us. Even if we know God is at work, we have a difficult time understanding what He might be doing. It is important to find daily blessings in our lives and to open our hearts and minds and to recognise Jesus in the everyday.
Blessings are all around us if we expect them and look for them.
The Story of Jesus' appearance to his disciples is called ‘The Road To Emmaus’ which can be found in the Bible in the book of Luke chapter 24 verse 13-25.

Emergency Practice
This term we will hold an unannounced emergency practice with staff & students, to test our response to a potential scenario that staff identify a threat warranting the school go into lockdown (opposite to evacuation).
Like for fire evacuation drills, we recognised the worth to test this process.
We have plans in place to make this practice as least disruptive as possible.
If you have queries you are welcome to call our Safety Officer Simon Natoli on 0400 105 476

Lauchlan Gray - Sport's Competition Winner
