Mrs gratton's Reflection

student support co-ordinator

Teach children values they should look for in others and strive to embody in their own relationships.
Alexandra Eidens
Welcome Everyone to Week 7.

As the term disappears before our very eyes, you may find yourself having an increased number of conversations with your child/children that centre around navigating their friendships. This could be due to a number of factors, including changes to normal school/home routines as we head into the Christmas season, preempting the transition into a new classroom with a different teacher/s and different classmates or simply the sheer exhaustion that the end of the school year brings with it.

There are endless resources available to parents when it comes to the topic of supporting children with friendship challenges; however I stumbled upon one I found particularly helpful not so long ago, written by the creators of The Big Life Journal, Alexandra and Scott Eidens.

Titled ‘How to Coach our Children through their Friendship Dramas/Challenges,’ this resource outlines the Dos and Don’t when it come to supporting children in becoming equipped with the tools and skills to successfully manage their friendships. The following outlines the Dos in order;

Do
Listen to your child without judgement and give your full attention.
Ask;
What happened?
What do you think the problem is?
And what did you mean when you said…?

Do
Ask open-end questions to learn more about the situation;
How did you feel when they said that?
What bothered you most about that situation?
If you could go back in time, what would you do/say differently?

Do
Show empathy.
Say;
That must have felt really hurtful when…
It must have been hard to stay in class after that happened.

Do
Ask;
What kind of help do they need from you?

How can I support you right now?
What do you need?

Say;
I’m always here if you need my help.

Do
Brainstorm together.
What are some options that you would be comfortable trying to manage/deal with?
How do you think others would react if you tried doing that?
What would you like to happen, and what do you think it would take to get there?

Do
Empower instead of catastrophising.
Say;
I know this is hard. I believe you can handle this in a positive way.
Being able to resolve conflicts is a skill. You can learn it and become good at it.

Talking regularly to your child/children about friendships is incredibly important. Audio stories, books, social media and personal experiences can be used as conversation starters to highlight what healthy friendships do and do not look like. We know that within a healthy friendship, individuals can be themselves, that good friends respect each other, and good friends show empathy.

Our school library is overflowing with friendship themed books, accessible by the link below.
OLOL Library - Friendship Reading List

As this is my final newsletter reflection for the year, I’d like to wish you all a truly special Christmas. It’s been a privilege sharing the journey that 2022 has been with you all.

Kind regards,
Eve

COVID-19 Update

COVID Changes

Recently Public Health provided CET with the following advice:
  • The level of illness experienced due to infection by one of the new sub variants of Omicron is no more severe than that for the BA5 variant (the term 2 & 3 dominant variant).
  • Children are at a very low risk of being impacted by COVID infection.
  • The predicted peak for the current increase in cases is expected to occur in the Xmas holidays (see graph below).
  • The stay home if unwell has been shown to be the most effective control in a school environment.
  • Schools should encourage persons who have visible symptoms of a respiratory illness to stay home and take a RAT.
  • Positive RAT results should be registered with Public Health.
  • Continue to supply RATs on request.
  • Persons who are COVID positive but asymptomatic can attend schools.
  • Mask wearing by adults is a personal choice. Mask wearing indoors for 7 days after testing positive for COVID is recommended. It is good practice for those who are immunocompromised to wear a mask in situations where they cannot socially distance.
  • In pleasant weather, encourage the opening of windows.
  • Public Health does not expect that the current settings for schools will change prior to the end of term 4.
  • The measures set out in CET's COVID-19 Safety Plan V16 still apply.

Thank you for your support and co-operation.

Vinnies Christmas Appeal
The St Vincent de Paul Christmas Appeal are in desperate need of items of food in particular special Christmas food items such as bon bons that would make a family’s Christmas Day special and different from an everyday meal. St Vincents would also like any donations of non-perishable food items to restock their pantry for the Christmas and holiday season. In order to support those in need we are collecting food for those who are not as fortunate as we are this Christmas season. Collection boxes are located in the school foyer.

Policy in Focus

In our Policy in Focus section we are sharing the Tasmanian Catholic Education Commission policy - Outdoor Play and Learning Policy.  This policy was approved by the Tasmanian Catholic Education Commission on 24 July 2018, and came into effect 27 July 2018.
The purpose of this policy is to support the provision and use of play spaces within our schools and to encourage positive learning experiences outside of the classroom.  The intent of the Policy is to ensure all parties are aware of their obligations in providing inspiring play spaces and rich outdoor learning experiences to enable students to grow and develop to their full potential in accordance with our Gospel values while ensuring the safest possible environment for those experiences.  A key aim of the Policy is to reinvigorate play spaces as areas for learning and adventure with reasonable and appropriately identified, managed risk-taking whilst ensuring Work Health and Safety (WHS) requirements are met.

We encourage you to read through and explore the policy.
