MRs seagar'S  Reflection

Principal

The enemy of peace is not only war, but also indifference, which makes us think only of ourselves, so that we create barriers, suspicions, fears and narrow-mindedness. These things are the enemies of peace.
Pope Francis, January 1, 2016.

Welcome everyone to Week 2.

As we know Anzac Day is a National Day of Remembrance in Australia and New Zealand that broadly commemorates all Australians and New Zealanders who served and died in all wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations and the contribution and suffering of all those who have served.

I wanted to share with you the thoughts from a young veteran who did a tour of Iraq in 2018.

ANZAC day has special significance for me as a member of the Australian Army. Through my time as a defence member, including a deployment to Iraq, I’ve had many opportunities to reflect on what it means to embrace the spirit of the ANZACs. I have come to realise that the essence of the ANZAC spirit is simple: when you serve others with intention, you make your life purpose broader than yourself. In doing so, you are honouring the brave men and women who courageously volunteered to fight a war in a country that was many thousands of miles from home. Unlike today, those young men and women did not have fast jets, laser guided weapons, or modern medicines available in their war. But they had purpose and they had courage.

Serving overseas highlighted for me how fortunate we are to live in Australia, a conflict-free country. Here, we have the same opportunities as the next person to get an education, choose where to live and what to do in life. We can take the dog for a walk without any fear for our safety. We can select a profession that appeals to us, regardless of whether we are male or female. We can travel wherever we want, whether it’s to the beach, the mountains, another state, or even another country. That luxury is not always available to other people, particularly not those in conflict situations, and especially not if you’re a woman in a country suffering the consequences of war.

On ANZAC day, let us be reminded that what the ANZACs so courageously fought and died for wasn’t just so we can live in a free country. Their sacrifices, and those of our current serving members, were and are in pursuit of a greater courageous purpose: so others can do the same; that is live in their own free country.

Spelling Mastery – Curriculum: INSIGHT
At Our Lady of Lourdes we have begun teaching a spelling program called Spelling Mastery.  This is part of the direct explicit instruction framework that Catholic Education Tasmania have adopted in the teaching of Literacy and Numeracy.  This Spelling Program has inherent within it the application of the Science of Learning, cognitive load theory and Rosenshine’s Principal’s of Instruction.

This in essence means:
• Every skill is introduced, reviewed, expanded, assessed and then reviewed cumulatively.
• It teaches phonemically (sound-symbol relationships) morphemically  learning about the bases and affixes of words) and whole word for words that do not fit spelling generalisations.
• Students are encouraged to think their way through spelling rather than memorising word lists.
• Repeated practice and application assists with cognitive load.
• Grouping to a placement test ensures students are at the optimal level for their learning and means some groups have mixed grades of students learning together.
•Teacher scripted lessons ensure best teaching and learning practice is incorporated into the lessons.

The Insight project, based squarely on the science of learning, is founded on the following four key components:
  • an ubiquitous, low-variance, knowledge-rich curriculum - that supports teaching and learning.
  • The need to manage cognitive load in all teaching and learning activity - which is achieved through
  • High-impact teacher practice - that is based on
  • Rosenshine's Principles of Instruction.

Beyond Blue - Building resilience in children
Resilience is important for children’s mental health. Children with greater resilience are better able to manage stress, which is a common response to difficult events.  Below is a link to useful information on building resilience in children provided by Beyond Blue.

RE NEWS

The Feast of Saint Joseph the Worker
St. Joseph is the one person the Church calls “the Worker”- even dedicating a day of the year (May 1) to honour him as such.

St. Joseph is known for manual labour. His work was not philosophy or theology.

St. Joseph lived in good times for men of his trade. His region was undergoing a building boom. Herod the Great ruled the Holy Land for more than 30 years, and more than any other king in antiquity he was known for his architectural skill.

An ancient tradition tells us that St. Joseph’s craft was carpentry, a trade in which he apprenticed his son Jesus. When people were astonished at Jesus’ teaching, they asked, “Isn’t this the carpenter’s son?” (Matthew 13:55).

Some years ago, Pope Francis spoke of the meaning of human labour, and he drew his teaching from the Book of Genesis: “It is clear from the very first pages of the Bible that work is an essential part of human dignity; there we read that ‘the Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to till it and keep it’ (Genesis 2:15). Man is presented as a labourer who works the earth [and] harnesses the forces of nature.”

Jesus learned his approach to work from his father, St. Joseph — who learned it surely from the Book of Genesis. The biblical understanding of labour — as something positive, honourable, and holy.

Prayer to St Joseph
Faithful Joseph:
Teach us to listen and not be afraid to trust, as you did in God’s promise.
Loving Joseph:
Teach us to love courageously with a heart that is free and just.
Protector Joseph:
Teach us to protect one another and all that belongs to God.
Dreamer Joseph:
Teach us to dream a world where all are neighbours; a vision illuminated by God’s light.
Teacher Joseph:
Teach us to keep the word of God close to our hearts, and to proclaim it in word and action.
Gentle Joseph:
Teach us to be gentle with our power and strong in our tenderness.
Parent Joseph:
Teach us to be for all persons a living lesson of goodness and truth – a Prayer blessing for generations to come.
Worker Joseph:
Teach us to work with thankfulness and joy, using our gifts received from God
to work with order, peace, moderation, and with patience.

Outdoor Play and Learning
Since 2014 Tasmanian Catholic Education has supported schools in offering children creative play and learning within our school outdoor spaces through our Risk and Adventure Policy.

In Term 2 we are reinstating Loose Parts Play into the playground at lunch times.

Examples of loose parts items students will use:  Logs, sticks, milk crates, ropes, tyres, plastic cable reels, tarps, pipes/tubing/hose and witches hats.

It is timely to restate some purposes of this policy, being:
  • Support learning and creative play with reasonable levels of risk-taking permitted
  • Offer age appropriate activities and items to encourage development of gross motor, collaboration and risk assessment skills
  • Enable children to extend their physical, intellectual and social capabilities
  • Ensure activities are assessed for suitability, and if so to proceed with appropriate safety adjustments and staff supervision levels in place.
Picture
We will continue to monitor and evaluate Loose Parts Play in the playground.

Policy in Focus

This week in our 'Policy in Focus' section of the Newsletter we have attached our Uniform Policy.  This policy outlines the expectations that we have for our students in regards to the wearing of their school uniform.  We are currently having a focus on 'doing the small things with pride'.  This means boys keeping their shirts tucked in, girls wearing the appropriate headbands, jewellery and nail polish, students with shoulder length hair keeping it tied back and the wearing of black, polishable school shoes.
