Mr farr's Reflection

Deputy Principal

I’m not a stranger in the hands of the Maker
Daniel Lanois
Welcome to Week 6 of Term 3.

We have been continuing our exploration of the parable of the Loving Father during our Early Years School Prayer and our Primary Years School Prayer.

The Parable itself is often referred to by several names: The Prodigal Son, The Lost Son, The Two Sons, The Loving Father, The Forgiving Father, in the Gospel of Luke, where it is found, it is referred to as Two Sons (Contemporary English Version).  I like to refer to this parable as the parable of The Loving Father.

During our exploration of this parable during our school prayers, we have been focusing on how this story gives us an insight into God’s love.  The Son who went away and spent his money on material possessions and ended up wanting to eat the food of the pigs, in the context of the parable, could not be further from God.  But although this was the case, when he decided to return home and seek forgiveness, being willing to return as a servant, not as the father’s son, he was forgiven without question and welcomed back into the father’s house with a celebration.  The son sought reconciliation with the father and it was welcomed.

Sometimes when we wrong another we can feel incredibly disconnected to them.  We might feel like hope is lost and we could not possibly seek forgiveness or reconciliation.  But, as the parable points out, we first need to find our way back together.  When something is broken, be it a relationship or an object, the pieces need to be brought back together so they can begin to be mended.  We often see this at school with our children.  We first need to come together and have a conversation regarding what has happened and apologise for our actions - seek forgiveness and forgive.  To seek forgiveness takes courage, humility and acceptance of our own faults.  To forgive takes the same, but as we grow up, can become harder and harder!  Our young children are quick to forgive and are ready to move on and be ‘friends again’ often without too much thought!

We explored a song in staff prayer last week, and I genuinely mean explored it as I thought it might be a good idea for me to sing it, so hence we explored not only the lyrics and music, but also the concepts of melody, key and pitch!  The song is a great piece of music written by Daniel Lanois, but I prefer the performance by Dave Matthews and Time Reynolds Live at Radio City.  It speaks to the story of the Loving Father, particularly in the first three verses where the narrator feels as far from ‘The Maker’ as possible, in fact a stranger in His eyes.  Yet by the third verse he has come to realise that he is not, nor ever will be a stranger to ‘The Maker’.

Enjoy!

The Maker
Oh, oh deep water
Black and cold like the night
I stand with arms wide open, I’ve run a twisted line
I’m a stranger in the eyes of the Maker

I could not see for the fog in my eyes
I could not feel for the fear in my life
But from across the great divide, in the distance I saw a light
Jean Baptiste, walking to me with the Maker

My body is bent and broken
By long and dangerous sleep
But I can’t work the fields of Abraham, and turn my head away
I’m not a stranger in the hands of the Maker

Brother John, have you seen the homeless daughters
Standing there with broken wings
I have seen the flaming swords, there over east of Eden
Burning in the eyes of the Maker
Burning in the eyes of the Maker
Burning in the eyes of the Maker

Oh, river rise from your sleep
Oh, river rise from your sleep
Oh, river rise from your sleep

Our Lady of Lourdes
Fr Damien celebrated a children’s Mass with Grade 2 to pray for our Parents and Grandparents. In preparation for the Mass the children planted and germinated seeds in paper boxes made by Grade 5 and 6. Fr Damien talked about the children working with their hands to grow the seeds and to use their hands for God’s work. Fr Damien also focused on the children’s families and asked the children to reflect on their behaviour in their family, encouraging the children to use their hands to do good deeds in order to help their family to grow in the love of God.

God, we hold these seeds in our hand.
We see smallness, weakness, insignificance.
You see potential, growth, significance.
Tiny seeds grow by your power into huge trees.
They provide food for the hungry and homes for the birds.
From the darkness of the earth springs forth your life, your harvest.
Your Kingdom is like a tiny seed.
When we look at your church, and our own lives,
we see smallness, weakness, insignificance.
You see potential, growth, significance.
Give us eyes of faith and willing hands to see your Kingdom grow in us.
May we feed the hungry with food and the bread of life,
welcome the homeless into your family,
and gather the harvest you love has provided.
In Christ's name and the power of the Spirit
we commit our lives to you again.
Amen.

Policy in Focus

This week in our Policy in Focus section we are sharing a new Catholic Education Commission Tasmania policy - Adult Behaviour Policy.  This policy was approved by the Catholic Education Commission Tasmania on 12 April 2022, and came into effect 1 July 2022.
The purpose of this policy are two fold:
1. To set out clear standards of the behaviour of adults when in a CET workplace.
2. To support CET workers to establish and maintain strong and healthy relationships with other members of the CET community.

We encourage you to read through and explore the policy.
