Are you using compass?

As you are aware Catholic Education Tasmania has moved to a new student record system called Compass. The Compass Program allows us to communicate with families directly through the Compass Parent Portal. The Compass Parent Portal is now our main communication tool. All parents will need to download the Compass App and ensure they are able to login.
Thank you to those families who have already taken up the Compass App and are successfully engaging with it and our school.

Mr farr's Reflection

"We limit how much technology our kids use at home"
Steve jobs

Welcome to Week 4!

Last week my wife shared with me the latest email from Scott Pape, otherwise known as The Barefoot Investor.  His message regarding screen time and family time resonated with my wife and I significantly and I thought that perhaps it will resonate with you too . . .

"Hi,

On the farm we’re building a barn.  Okay, honestly, it’s an old-school man cave, with a pool table, a dart board and a very big library.  “It’s very analogue, Dad”, says my eight-year-old.

He’s right of course. There’s not a screen in sight. Yet at least my kids are used to it — over the years I’ve gone out of my way to do things with my kids that encourage them away from screens.  In fact, I joke that my aim is for them to be bored a decent amount of time. After all, that’s when ideas are formed, and connections are made. Instead, we now live in a world where we are constantly distracted, and manipulated, into what to think and believe.  And so I was interested in a study last month by Reviews.org which found that “Aussies spend 17 years of their life staring at their phone”, which works out to be 5.5 hours a day for the average Aussie.  My first thought was “that sounds pretty high”.  So I grabbed my wife’s iPhone and checked her usage (‘settings > screen time’): “5 hours a day.”  And my screen time?  “Zero”, because I don’t carry a phone (though my wife argues strenuously that I add to her daily limit).  Worse, the study found that the average Millennial spends a massive 7.3 hours a day staring at their phone.  That’s kind of crazy when you drill down on it. Deduct sleep (eight hours) and school (where phones are banned or frowned upon) and the average young Aussie spends almost every other waking minute staring at a screen.  Astounding!

Now, I’m certainly no shrink, but my thinking is that if you’re devoting seven hours of every single day to doing something, you’re well on the road to having an addiction  … which is exactly how the tech titans have engineered it.  Here’s the point: the most valuable currency in the world isn’t Bitcoin, or dollars, or Dogecoin.  The true currency of the internet age is attention.  When you capture and control people’s attention, you have power.  (Just ask Dogecoin investors, or Donald Trump.)

That’s why Big Tech will continue to use their psychological tricks (nudges, notifications, outrage) to steal more of your attention. And it’s also why they’re trying to hook us younger: kids as young as six have Messenger Kids, and Instagram has announced it’s launching a kids’ version, with a spokesman for Facebook’s Australian operations saying the platform would “fill a distinct gap in apps for children”.

What’s the bottom line?

Well, I know I’m fighting a losing battle. This is the world our kids are growing up in.  Yet I’m taking a leaf out of Steve Jobs’ book. When the founding father of technology was asked by a New York Times journalist what his kids thought of the iPad, he gave an unexpected reply: “They haven’t used it. We limit how much technology our kids use at home”.

And that’s why I’m holding out in my old-fashioned analogue barn for as long as possible. After all, my kids have got plenty of time before they become adults ... and stare at their phones for 17 years.

Tread Your Own Path!"

17 years is definitely something worth thinking about!

Have a great week,

Stu

Australian Early Development Census
This year our school, along with thousands of others across the country will begin preparations for the fifth Australian Early Development Census (AEDC).
The AEDC gives us a national picture of the development, health and wellbeing of children in their first year of full-time school (Prep). Since 2009, the census results have helped communities, schools and governments plan services and develop better policies to target support for children and families.  Children don’t miss any class time, and parents/carers don’t need to supply schools with any new information for the census. The AEDC gives us data at a school and community level - it isn’t an assessment of individual children.
Some teachers have also noticed that completing the assessments made them more aware of the needs of individual children and the class as a whole and that the census results are useful in planning for transitions to Year 1 and developing class programs.
Participation in the AEDC is voluntary. Parents/carers don’t need to take any action unless they choose not to include their children in the census.
To find out more about the census and how communities are using the data to help children and families visit the AEDC website: www.aedc.gov.au or speak to your Prep child's teacher or Mr Farr.

Emergency Practice
In the coming weeks there will be a fire drill practice for staff and students.  This is an unannounced drill to test our response to a potential emergency situation. The school will be locked for the duration of the fire drill. The practice will be as least disruptive to student learning as possible.

Rainbows Program
We will be offering the Rainbows Program in Term 2. This Program aims to foster emotional resilience in children following experiences of bereavement, loss and family separation.
Children will participate in a weekly session, approximately 30 minutes, in a peer support group of other children with a Rainbows Facilitator, Mrs Jodi Clements. Mrs Clements is a trained and accredited Rainbows Facilitator and staff member of our school. The program has a total of 12 sessions.
If you wish for your child to participate in this program or would like further information please contact your child's class teachers or the school office.

Tasmanian Premier's Reading Challenge - (Monday April 26 - Friday July 2)
Students from Prep to Year 6 are challenged to make reading part of their day and read 10 books in 10 weeks. Students have received a reading log book and book mark. Once completed, logs can be handed to their teacher or Mrs Marshall in the Library. All students participating in the Challenge  go into the draw to win a school visit from Hawka.  Students who complete the Challenge will receive a certificate from the Premier and go into the draw to win a $100 book voucher.

Fencing Works at OLOL
Over the last two weeks a black mesh fence has been installed around the school. The only access to the school from the Steele Street Carpark is now via the main avenue. The fence will provide added safety for our students. Once the project is completed (we are presently waiting on a gate), we are going to trial locking the school in the evenings and on weekends for one month. This is to try to reduce the vandalism and foreign objects being left in the playground outside of school hours. If this is unsuccessful in reducing misuse and damage to the school we will return to leaving the gates open.

COVID 19 Update
Contract Tracing & TAS app
Visitors such as parents and carers can enter the school for up to 15 minutes before having to provide contact tracing details. If parents are volunteering at school, meeting with staff or attending events they must Check in using the TAS App.

Please see the information below about how to download the TAS App.

Tasmanians and visitors are required to use the Check in TAS App when they visit a range of business, organisations and events. This will help to keep ourselves, our loved ones and our community safe.
If you do not have a smartphone or are unable to use one, others in your group can check in for you on their device or staff at the premises will be able to record your contact information on their device or with pen and paper.
The free Check In TAS App is available for download from the Google Play Store and Apple App Store.
Please go to https://coronavirus.tas.gov.au/check-in-tas/information-for-the-community for more information.
School Events
Unfortunately, due to the size of the church and school gym we are not able to have parents at Whole School Prayer or Assemblies. This is due to COVID social distancing requirements of adults in these spaces. Whole School Prayer and Assemblies will continue to be live streamed for families to watch.
Social Distancing
Reminder that all adults must observe the 1.5m separation whilst on the school site.

Medical Students
If your Child suffers from Asthma, the Office requires Asthma Medical Plans that are signed and provided by a Doctor for 2021. Please provide to the Office if required.  All other Medical plans need to be for the current year.  Could current medical plans be bought into the office as soon as possible please.
