Mrs gratton's Reflection

student support coordinator

“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more you learn, the more places you’ll go.”
Dr Seuss

Welcome families to Week 7 of Term 3.

Books, books and more books. One of my greatest joys as a parent has been sharing my passion for reading with my children. We’ve watched our children grow their knowledge, vocab, imagination, social/emotional skills and self-confidence through the sharing of books. The most exciting part, though, has been watching their love of reading develop. As we know, a love of reading unlocks the door to lifelong learning.

Early reading experiences are vital to our children’s growth towards becoming independent readers. Children who value books are more motivated to read on their own and will likely continue to hold that value for the rest of their lives.

Our brains are naturally set up to learn to speak, but learning to read does not happen independently. Instead, scientists have found that we must develop certain parts of our brain and build connections between brain areas to become successful readers. This is the Science of Reading. So how do we learn to read?

There exist four primary areas of the brain that we use when we read:
  • Visual Cortex- This part of our brain helps us to see things. We use this brain area when we look at and recognise written letters and words.
  • Angular Gyrus- This brain area helps us connect sounds with letters and letters with sounds. We use this part of our brain to read words aloud or to ourselves and to put words on a page.
  • Auditory Cortex- This brain area allows us to hear and tell the difference between sounds in spoken language. When we read, we use this part of the brain to identify the sounds that make up words.
  • Inferior Frontal Gyrus- This part of our brain helps us make speech sounds, form words and sentences and understand the meaning of what we listen to and read.

In order to become successful readers, our brains need to learn to decode. We must also add to our vocabulary and comprehension skills; however decoding is a critical first step in becoming a lifelong reader. The following four decoding skills help develop different parts of the brain, creating brain connections.

  • Phonological Awareness: The English language has 44 different speech sounds. Recognising all of these speech sounds allows us to read successfully.
  • Print Concepts: We must also be able to recognise the letters of the alphabet, the basic parts of a book and the special rules that print must follow. Pointing out the front and back of a book, capital letters, lowercase letters, and punctuation marks can help us understand how writing works.
  • Phonics and Word Recognition: Once we know the sounds of the alphabet, we can begin to put them together to read words. We learn how to sound out words and which letters and combinations of letters make which sounds.
  • Fluency: When we know about the connections between sounds, letters and words, we can put it all together by reading sentences and books. The more we practise sounding out words, the easier it will become to recognise both new and familiar words on the page.

The Science of Reading begins at home. Thank you for putting in place a foundation of joy for us to build upon. As said by Mem Fox, retired Associate Professor of Literacy Studies and children’s author, “When I say to a parent, 'read to a child,' I don't want it to sound like medicine. I want it to sound like chocolate.”

May your homes be filled with the wonders found within books. Happy reading, everyone.

Kind regards

Eve

Social Justice Sunday
We celebrated Social Justice Sunday at the weekend (29th of August). The Australian Bishops’ Social Justice Statement, Cry of the Earth, Cry of the Poor, calls us to listen, hear and respond to the cry of the earth and the cry of the poor through practical action. We know intuitively that when one part of the Body of Christ is wounded, the other parts care for the afflicted part so that all can be healed and made whole. What affects one affects all, as everything and everyone is connected.

It is clear that the signs of our times call for urgent action to defend, protect, and restore the earth and the dignity of the human person, especially those places, creatures, and people who are most vulnerable. People are more important than profits, and the beauty of our natural world is a precious gift to us and to the generations who will follow. In transitioning to sustainable and just economic systems and practices, we commit to partnering with the work of the Spirit in renewing the face of the earth. https://socialjustice.catholic.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/Social-Justice-Sunday-liturgy-notes-2021.pdf

Let us join together to pray for all peoples who are marginalised, discriminated against, threatened with violence and unable to live a full life that God has intended for us.
Let us especially pray for the peoples of Afghanistan at this time.

Let us call on God the Creator to hear the prayers from our hearts and homes, neighbourhoods and nation, and wider world.
For world leaders: that promises made to the Afghani people will be upheld by the international community.
For conversion of mind and heart: that all people of good will overcome hatred and division. For Afghani women and girls: that hard-fought-for freedoms will endure, and courage be placed in their hearts.
For Afghani staff who have supported Australian personnel since 2001: that security and safety be extended to them in practical solidarity.
For people in all world trouble spots, including Yemen, Haiti, and countries most impacted by Covid-19.
For people of all faith traditions: that they will put aside differences and seek justice and peace together.
Gracious and loving God, as we pray with all those who suffer today, may you be with them, and with us in this time of great sorrow and lament. We ask this prayer through Christ, our Lord.

SunSmart Policy - Hats required from 1st September - 30th April
Late last year we reviewed our SunSmart Policy. The purpose of this Policy is to establish guidelines for the school, employees, parents and volunteers to comply with the School Sun Protection Policy based on recommendations made by Cancer Council Tasmania.

Please see the extract below:
Over-exposure to UV (ultraviolet) rays causes sunburn, skin damage and increased risk of skin cancer. Inappropriate sun exposure in the first 18 years of life contributes significantly to the lifetime risk of developing skin cancer.  Schools can play a significant role toward reducing the lifetime risk of skin cancer.
The sun protection policy has been developed to ensure that all students, teachers and the school community are protected from skin damage caused by harmful UV radiation from the sun.  In Tasmania, the UV is 3 and above from September to April and safe sun exposure for Vitamin D (May to August). Therefore, schools need to implement sun protection measures from the beginning of the school year until the end of April and again from the beginning of September until the end of the school year. Implementing sun protection measures throughout Terms 1 and 4 only is insufficient to protect against UV rays.

Therefore from the 1st September - 30th April staff and students will be required to wear Sun Hats. Sunscreen is also provided for staff and students to use.

Policy in Focus

We are committed to the National Principles for Child Safe Organisations and the corresponding Child Safe Standards identified by the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse Report.  As such we have a clear Child Safety Policy and utilise a number of documents to support this policy further.  Over the next few weeks we will explore our Child Safety Policy, supporting instruments and guiding documents.
