Welcome everyone to Week 4.

Catholic Education Week Celebrations
Proclaim with Joy the Good News of Jesus Christ.
This week across Tasmania we are celebrating Catholic Education Week. This is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the strengths and achievements of the 38 Catholic schools as well as, and most importantly, the people who contribute to Catholic Education Tasmania’s ongoing success.

Today, a celebratory Mass was held at Our Lady of Lourdes Church with the NW Catholic Schools’ staff and students present, alongside Catholic Education Office Staff and many of our NW Priests. It was wonderful to see all of the Grade 6 students from the NW able to share in this Mass and then to mix with each other over a BBQ and play on the school oval.

This afternoon at St Brendan Shaw College we will be acknowledging staff from the NW who have loyally served Catholic Education Tasmania.  OLOL has 3 special awards for 25 years of service or more, being given to Donna Ellis, Margaret Greenhill and Susan Arrowsmith.  Please congratulate these women, when you see them in passing, on this wonderful achievement.  It is the dedicated staff of our Catholic Schools that ensure the living out of the Gospel values every day in every school.

Last week at OLOL we are celebrated the Feast Day of St Mary of the Cross Mackillop (8th August). Mary Mackillop alongside Father Julian Tenison Woods founded the Sisters of St Joseph, who in turn establish Our Lady of Lourdes, Devonport in 1891.

The Sisters of St Joseph, were so named because they viewed St Joseph as a real companion who shared their enterprise with God, guiding their journey every step of the way.   And what a journey that has proved to be. Mary MacKillop set up 106 houses of St Joseph, educating children in need across Australia and New Zealand.  These schools aimed to overcome poverty, illiteracy, and social isolation.  As a very practical person Mary set the direction for all staff working in Josephite Schools – action before words: We must teach more by example than by word (1867).

The earliest official document of the Institute of the Sisters of St Joseph written by Father Julian in co-operation with Mary Mackillop in 1867 stated:
The sisters must be poor, humble, and consider themselves lest among all religious orders, studying to keep their lives hidden in God as the life of St Joseph was.
The sisters were encouraged to imitate Joseph in their humanly friendly and happy manner with the children they were to teach:
They are to make themselves the companions of the children.

It is this word companion and the humble nature of the Sisters of St Joseph that still lives in the schools, one of those is Our Lady of Lourdes.  In educating our students all staff work alongside students and will always respond when they see a need.

Kind regards,

Carol

COVID-19 Update

COVID UPDATE - Term 3
  • The reinfection exclusion period has been reduced from 12 weeks to 28 days. People who have symptoms of COVID-19 within 28 days following their release from isolation do not need to test and isolate for 7 days.
  • Face masks are no longer required to be worn in schools, early childhood centres or on public transport unless the person is a close contact. Primary School students do not need to wear a face mask.
  • Students and staff may choose to wear a face mask whilst at school and will be supported in doing so.

Should a student or member of staff test positive for COVID-19 they must:
  • Isolate for a minimum of 7 days, provided outside the 28-day reinfection exclusion period.
  • Isolate for a further 3 days if they still have symptoms on day 7.
  • If test positive using a rapid antigen test, register the result with Public Health using their online declaration form or phone the Public Health Hotline 1800 671 738.

Mary of the Cross MacKillop
Monday the 8th of August was the Feast Day of Mary MacKillop. The students celebrated with prayer and individual classes completed different activities on the life and teachings of Mary our First Australian Saint.

The Junior Joey’s created prayer spaces in the Josephite prayer garden. The children contributed to the prayer space by writing their own prayers and displaying the prayers on the fence. The second activity asked the children to identify the teaching of Mary that underpins our school ethos “Never see a need without doing something about it.”

The children were asked to acknowledge others' actions by writing down the people who saw a need and did something about it. This activity was placed underneath our new Mary MacKillop Charism Wall.

Baptism
Mrs Wescombes Grade 1 class have been learning about the Sacrament of Baptism which is a sacrament of initiation into the Church. The symbols of Baptism are oil of Chrism and the oil of Catechumins, cross, candle (light of Christ), white garment (clothed in Christ). The children have been learning about the sacramental gestures involved in Baptism through acting out the sacramental rite, drawing and writing.

Catholic Education Week - Proclaim with Joy

Today our Grade 6 leaders attended Catholic Education Week Mass at Our Lady of Lourdes Church celebrated by Archbishop Julian Porteous DD. The Mass was attended by Catholic Schools from the North West Coast. A sausage sizzle was held for the students at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School after the Mass. The theme of the Catholic Education Week is Proclaim with Joy. Our students share in the Joy of Christ each day at school and this week is a great chance for the children to join with other students in Catholic Education that share this common belief and bond. A great day was had by all.

School Validation Survey
Thank you so much to the 185 parents (31% of our school parents) who have replied to the school validation survey sent out on the 25th July to your email address.

OLOL would love to hear from the other 69% of parents. We value your contribution to this survey which will inform the school on future directions for your child at OLOL. Please take the 10 minutes to complete this survey and have an impact on the learning and teaching at OLOL.

We thank you in anticipation.

Toys at School
We have had lots of lost toys at school, and very sad children. If your child is bringing a toy from home could the toy be named please. Explain to your child that the toy may get lost and not be found. It would be much better if toys stayed at home but we understand if your child needs a comfort toy.

Drink Bottles
Please ensure your child is coming to school daily with a drink bottle. We have had quite a lot of students over last term and last week especially who do not have or are not bringing drink bottles to school. Please make sure your child has their drink bottle with them each day as it is so important that your child stays hydrated.

STEM MAD Competition
STEM MAD
is a celebration of student learning designed to acknowledge and promote STEM learning initiatives that address real-world problems and demonstrate how students in Catholic schools take action that matters.

We have had two groups of students preparing submissions for the statewide STEM MAD competition. Student teams were invited to design a product, service or innovation to 'Make A Difference' (MAD) to others or the environment. Zac, Tahlia, Imy and Hugo created 'Turbo Electro', a portable solar powered generator. Matilda, Rose, Margaret and Sam created ‘Smart Vision’, a pair of glasses with a built in earpiece that assists blind people with movement.

We were thrilled to hear that ‘Turbo Electro’ won the Future is STEM category in the Tasmanian competition. As winners of this award, they are invited to present their product as a physical display at the National Live STEM MAD Showcase. They will join the nation's best primary, secondary and 'Future is STEM' student teams to showcase their project. This will be held on Tuesday the 6th of September at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC). This is a most exciting and prestigious opportunity for our students.

We were delighted to hear that this group also won the Best Presented Project award and our ‘Smart Vision’ group won the Social Action award. We are extremely proud of the amazing attitude, effort and initiative that all of these students displayed when completing their projects. These superstars have a very bright future ahead of them in the STEM field.

Policy in Focus

This week in our Policy in Focus section we are sharing a new Catholic Education Commission Tasmania policy - Adult Behaviour Policy.  This policy was approved by the Catholic Education Commission Tasmania on 12 April 2022, and came into effect 1 July 2022.
The purpose of this policy are two fold:
1. To set out clear standards of the behaviour of adults when in a CET workplace.
2. To support CET workers to establish and maintain strong and healthy relationships with other members of the CET community.

We encourage you to read through and explore the policy.
