Are you using compass?

As you are aware Catholic Education Tasmania has moved to a new student record system called Compass. The Compass Program allows us to communicate with families directly through the Compass Parent Portal. The Compass Parent Portal is now our main communication tool. All parents will need to download the Compass App and ensure they are able to login.
Thank you to those families who have already taken up the Compass App and are successfully engaging with it and our school.

Mrs seagar's Reflection

Principal

“The most important thing in the life of every man and every woman is not that they should never fall along the way.  The important thing is always to get back up, not stay on the ground licking your wounds.”
Pope Francis

Welcome to Week 5

Resilience is a much-talked concept and an expected lifelong skill. The dictionary defines it as: the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties; toughness.

We as parents can understand this but may not helping our children develop resilience;  we may be in fact hindering it. I know this is hard to hear and is challenging. However sometimes in life we all need a wake-up call.

The rise of ‘helicopter’ and overprotective parenting, or lawn mower parenting (parents who prepare the way for their child) may inhibit the personal growth of the child. Even if well-intended, this overparenting attitude has counterproductive effects. Children develop learned helplessness when faced with a challenge, instead of developing coping mechanisms or confidence in their ability to negotiate a challenge. Overparenting can crystallize in low self-esteem, confidence, anxiety, and depression.

Resilience is about the process of becoming, which children understand once they develop a firm belief about their place in the world. When students believe that they are worthy and capable of overcoming challenges, they become resilient.

“Children who develop resilience are better able to face disappointment, learn from failure, cope with loss and adapt to change. We recognize resilience in children when we observe their determination, grit, and perseverance to tackle problems and cope with the emotional challenges of school and life.”
Marilyn Price-Mitchell (2015)

Here are some components that make up being resilient:
• Competence = having skills to face challenges and having the opportunity to practice using these skills so one feels competent in dealing with situations.
• Confidence = the belief in one’s own abilities and this is obtained by demonstrating their own competence in real situations.
• Character = having a strong sense of self-worth and confidence.  Having a sense of right and wrong; caring and making wise choices
• Coping = social skills, stress reduction, emotional intelligence all help the child  cope more effectively and are better prepared to overcome life’s challenges.
• Control = having some control over their decisions and actions, and knowing that poor and good choices have consequences allows children to bounce back from life’s challenges.

Teaching of social and emotional skills is a feature and responsibility of schools and parents but we are teaching the skills not actually doing the skill for child; that is the difference.

I wish all of us the best as we embark on developing resilience in our children in the 21st century – an ask like no other!

God Bless

Carol

Australian Early Development Census
This year our school, along with thousands of others across the country will begin preparations for the fifth Australian Early Development Census (AEDC).
The AEDC gives us a national picture of the development, health and wellbeing of children in their first year of full-time school (Prep). Since 2009, the census results have helped communities, schools and governments plan services and develop better policies to target support for children and families.  Children don’t miss any class time, and parents/carers don’t need to supply schools with any new information for the census. The AEDC gives us data at a school and community level - it isn’t an assessment of individual children.
Some teachers have also noticed that completing the assessments made them more aware of the needs of individual children and the class as a whole and that the census results are useful in planning for transitions to Year 1 and developing class programs.
Participation in the AEDC is voluntary. Parents/carers don’t need to take any action unless they choose not to include their children in the census.
To find out more about the census and how communities are using the data to help children and families visit the AEDC website: www.aedc.gov.au or speak to your Prep child's teacher or Mr Farr.

Emergency Practice
In the coming weeks there will be a fire drill practice for staff and students.  This is an unannounced drill to test our response to a potential emergency situation. The school will be locked for the duration of the fire drill. The practice will be as least disruptive to student learning as possible.

Rainbows Program
We will be offering the Rainbows Program in Term 2. This Program aims to foster emotional resilience in children following experiences of bereavement, loss and family separation.
Children will participate in a weekly session, approximately 30 minutes, in a peer support group of other children with a Rainbows Facilitator, Mrs Jodi Clements. Mrs Clements is a trained and accredited Rainbows Facilitator and staff member of our school. The program has a total of 12 sessions.
If you wish for your child to participate in this program or would like further information please contact your child's class teachers or the school office.

Tasmanian Premier's Reading Challenge - (Monday April 26 - Friday July 2)
Students from Prep to Year 6 are challenged to make reading part of their day and read 10 books in 10 weeks. Students have received a reading log book and book mark. Once completed, logs can be handed to their teacher or Mrs Marshall in the Library. All students participating in the Challenge  go into the draw to win a school visit from Hawka.  Students who complete the Challenge will receive a certificate from the Premier and go into the draw to win a $100 book voucher.

Uniform Shop updated hours (commencing Monday 31st May)
Monday - Tuesday 8:00am - 10:00am

Thursday 8:00am - 10:00am

Fencing Works at OLOL
Over the last two weeks a black mesh fence has been installed around the school. The only access to the school from the Steele Street Carpark is now via the main avenue. The fence will provide added safety for our students. Once the project is completed (we are presently waiting on a gate), we are going to trial locking the school in the evenings and on weekends for one month. This is to try to reduce the vandalism and foreign objects being left in the playground outside of school hours. If this is unsuccessful in reducing misuse and damage to the school we will return to leaving the gates open.

Fire Education
Commencing June 7 our school will be hosting Firefighter Craig from Tasmania Fire Service (TFS) to present a Home Fire Safety Program to our Prep to Grade 6 students.  Kindergarten students, whilst not receiving a structured lesson, can expect a visit from the
firefighter who will leave some free fun activities for the students to complete.  The age appropriate program is designed to raise fire awareness in children and includes fun in class activities, videos, activity books, giveaways and a new kid’s website www.tfskids.com.au.  Parents and other family members are also encouraged to participate by reading the information and assisting your child with the after school activities.  The TFS aims to deliver appropriate fire safety education to every primary school child in
Tasmania and is part of the TFS’s ongoing commitment to create a fire safe Tasmania.

COVID 19 Update
Contract Tracing & TAS app
Visitors such as parents and carers can enter the school for up to 15 minutes before having to provide contact tracing details. If parents are volunteering at school, meeting with staff or attending events they must Check in using the TAS App.

Please see the information below about how to download the TAS App.

Tasmanians and visitors are required to use the Check in TAS App when they visit a range of business, organisations and events. This will help to keep ourselves, our loved ones and our community safe.
If you do not have a smartphone or are unable to use one, others in your group can check in for you on their device or staff at the premises will be able to record your contact information on their device or with pen and paper.
The free Check In TAS App is available for download from the Google Play Store and Apple App Store.
Please go to https://coronavirus.tas.gov.au/check-in-tas/information-for-the-community for more information.
School Events
Unfortunately, due to the size of the church and school gym we are not able to have parents at Whole School Prayer or Assemblies. This is due to COVID social distancing requirements of adults in these spaces. Whole School Prayer and Assemblies will continue to be live streamed for families to watch.
Social Distancing
Reminder that all adults must observe the 1.5m separation whilst on the school site.

Medical Students
If your Child suffers from Asthma, the Office requires Asthma Medical Plans that are signed and provided by a Doctor for 2021. Please provide to the Office if required.  All other Medical plans need to be for the current year.  Could current medical plans be bought into the office as soon as possible please.
