Are you using compass?

As you are aware Catholic Education Tasmania has moved to a new student record system called Compass. The Compass Program allows us to communicate with families directly through the Compass Parent Portal. The Compass Parent Portal is now our main communication tool. All parents will need to download the Compass App and ensure they are able to login.
Thank you to those families who have already taken up the Compass App and are successfully engaging with it and our school.

Mrs seagar's Reflection

principal

Whether we search in earth, or sky, or sea, we are everywhere met by visions of the illimitable.

Julian Tenison Woods 1862

Welcome to Week 5.

The wonderful, exciting aspect of teaching is witnessing students learn – the moments when they have really understand a concept, process, fact, skill and they can articulate their learning back to others. This learning is crafted by the teacher who understands the science of learning (brain science): how the child learns and how to construct learning so that working memory, long term memory and attention span can optimise this learning.

It is now known that:
• The brain is a social organ that requires stimulation and connection to survive and thrive. That’s why teachers create positive social experiences in the classroom. Promoting social-emotional learning programs that decrease student conflict and creating positive social climates in the classroom are invaluable to learning.
• Both hemispheres need to be engaged in learning. In general, the left hemisphere has taken the lead on language processing, linear thinking and pro-social functioning while the right hemisphere specialises in visual-spatial processing, strong emotions, and private experience.
• The mind, brain, and body are interwoven. Physical activity exerts a stimulating influence on the entire brain that keeps it functioning at an optimal level. Exercise has been shown to stimulate the birth of new neurons in the hippocampus and to pump more oxygen through the brain, stimulating capillary growth and frontal-lobe plasticity.
• The brain has a short attention span and needs repetition through various means and multiple-channel processing for deeper learning to occur (not mindless repetition).  Repetition involves the strengthening of connections between neurons. “What fires together wires together,” say neuroscientists, which is why repetition supports learning while the absence of repetition and exposure results in its decay.
• Curiosity, plays an important role too, as we are rewarded for curiosity by dopamine and opioids (feel-good chemicals in the brain), which are stimulated in the face of something new. Because our brains evolved to remain vigilant to a constantly changing environment, we learn better in brief intervals.
• Our brains evolved to learn through trial-and-error exploration. We are born to explore, and teachers use this strategy and those above,  in daily teaching in order to build successful learning.

The work and potential of the human brain is an amazing feat and could be added to Julian’s quote above. The potential of our brains is endless, in fact illimitable.

All entry to OLOL via Steele Street will be up the main pathway.  These works are expected to take place in the First Term holidays.

2021 Newsletter Format Feedback
Thank you to all those parents and families that provided feedback in regards to our Newsletter format and content.  The feedback received was overwhelmingly positive - most respondents were pleased with the amount of content and the layout / format of the Newsletter.  The biggest point of improvement was the Student of the Week section of the Newsletter, as when the Newsletter was being viewed on a mobile phone the Student of the Week section when somewhat 'haywire' and was difficult to read.  We have attempted to rectify this issue with a new layout and presentation for the Student of the Week.

Carpark

Our Steele Street carpark is a privilege.  There are not many school's in the centre of any city that have a carpark the size of ours.  We are able to provide onsite parking for approximately 50 vehicles and a drop off / pick up zone within our carpark alone.  We also have front of school 15min parking along Stewart Street and many other options to park and walk less than 500 metres to school.  With the amount of parking that we have available, it is concerning that our carpark continues to be a source of frustration.

It is expected that at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School our students, staff, parents and community members uphold our three values of being Respectful, Responsible and Safe.  These three values apply to our carpark and those that are using it, just as they do for any other area of our school.

Our carpark will be having some minor modifications made to it - changes to the curbing near the pedestrian crossing and removal of the garden bed and curbing at the driveway.  Otherwise, how our carpark is now is how it will be for the foreseeable future.  As such, all users, particularly drivers, need to learn to use it appropriately by being Respectful, Responsible and Safe.

In our Carpark . . .
We are Respectful
  • Follow the rules of the carpark -
    • Do not go around other cars waiting at the driveway - we wouldn't do this in any other driveway entrance, why do it in our carpark?
    • Do not park in the drop off zone
    • Move forward in the drop off zone when it is clear to do so
    • Follow the instructions of staff who are on duty in the Carpark
    • Our staff do not deserve to be abused for ensuring the smooth running of our carpark - we wouldn't abuse them in front of our children in the classroom, so why do it in the carpark?
We are Responsible
  • Our Carpark is on a busy main road, if we do not follow normal road rules we could cause an accident
    • Do not turn RIGHT into our carpark from the traffic lights - this is a normal road rule as there are double white lines in front of the driveway
    • Turn LEFT only when exiting our carpark
    • Drive slowly through our carpark - the speed limit sign says 5km/h
    • Staff members are on duty in the carpark until 3:20 - if you arrive to pick your child up from 3:05 onward vehicles usually move through the carpark without having to wait at all
    • If the carpark is full or there is a long queue of cars, drive around the block until the congestion calms down
    • Utilise the 15min zone street parking on Stewart Street to collect your child and bypass the carpark altogether
We are Safe
  • The main priority of our staff on duty is the safety of our children and all other users of our carpark
    • We are not Police and shouldn't have to enforce standard road rules outside of our carpark due to the negligent and irresponsible behaviour of some of our community members
    • All directions given to drivers by staff are done so to ensure the Safety of all those using our Carpark and the smooth flow of traffic - it is expected that these directions are followed
    • Be patient - our carpark is what it is, we need to accept the limitations of its functionality

If you have any questions, concerns or comments regarding our Carpark please direct them to myself - with the understanding that our Carpark will not be changing and it is up to each user to use it Respectfully, Responsibly and Safely.

Regards,
