Mr farr's Reflection

deputy principal

Clear is kind.
Brene Brown
Welcome everyone to Week 8 of Term 4!

Today is Orientation Day.  This is the first day where we as a school community truly begin to celebrate the current year and look towards the next.

Our Orientation Day is always a day of mixed emotions.  Our students and teachers alike are filled with excitement and nervousness, joy and perhaps a touch of sadness.  But on the whole, there is always an unmistakable buzz about our school on this day each year.  It is the excitable buzz of students chattering in the corridors on their way to their new rooms.  The energised conversations of teachers before school discussing what activities they are going to undertake with their new class.  The slight nervousness that can be felt when walking into a room where the students and teachers are ‘feeling each other out’ and getting to know each other.  Today our students orient themselves with a new classroom, a different mix of peers and a different teacher.  Our teachers begin to learn, if they haven’t already done so through playground duties etc, their new student’s names, or perhaps simply put names to faces.  This all takes time, much longer than a single day can provide, but it is an important start to setting up for a positive year.

Whilst today marks an important milestone each year - the beginning of the end of the current year - next Tuesday is a more formal acknowledgement of our current year.  Teachers have worked hard to complete student reports and have genuinely given hours of their own time to ensure that each child’s report is a true reflection of their level of understanding, knowledge and skills and shares insight into the behaviours and attitudes that they demonstrate at school.

We are required by the Government to provide an A-E or equivalent scale for each student in formal / full time schooling (Prep - Grade 6).  In Grades 3 - 6 this takes the A-E form directly, whilst in our Early Years, Prep, Grade 1 and Grade 2, this takes the form of Outstanding, High, Sound, Partial, Minimal.  Our teachers strive to craft clear, succinct and fluent reports that, at the end of year, make it clear what each child has achieved.  We purposefully choose words that align with the single point rubrics our teachers and students work with each day; which have been consistently shared with you as parents over the course of the year.  Our rubrics use the terms Developing, Consolidating and Extending - in some early years classes this may take the form of 1 star, 2 star and 3 star - to provide feedback to our students and provide them with a clear assessment of their achievements in a particular unit.  In line with that, our reports use particular terms to highlight this:

Developing: limited, beginning, initial, developing, some
Consolidating:
sound, satisfactory, reasonable, adequate
Extending:
outstanding, excellent, thorough, high, extensive

These terms are used throughout Catholic Education Tasmania for assessment purposes.  As you read your child’s report next week you may notice the use of these terms.  They are purposefully being used to achieve the clarity that we strive to achieve.  If you notice there is a strong use of terms from Consolidating, for example, I predict you will notice your child has received the overall mark of Sound, or a C.  If you notice consistent use of terms from Extending, it will make sense that your child will have received an overall mark of Outstanding or High in the early years or an A if in Grades 3 - 6.

What we are constantly attempting to achieve is clarity not only in these end of year reports, but across the year through our use of rubrics and feedback.  In this way each student, their parents and their teachers, should all be on the same page in their understanding of what they have achieved - to what level they have demonstrated their understanding, knowledge and skills of the subject matter.  This continues to be a work in progress as this was the first year we have undertaken this process, however we are confident that it is a process that, with some refinement, achieves this purpose.

Enjoy your week,

Stu

COVID-19 Update

COVID Changes

Recently Public Health provided CET with the following advice:
  • The level of illness experienced due to infection by one of the new sub variants of Omicron is no more severe than that for the BA5 variant (the term 2 & 3 dominant variant).
  • Children are at a very low risk of being impacted by COVID infection.
  • The predicted peak for the current increase in cases is expected to occur in the Xmas holidays (see graph below).
  • The stay home if unwell has been shown to be the most effective control in a school environment.
  • Schools should encourage persons who have visible symptoms of a respiratory illness to stay home and take a RAT.
  • Positive RAT results should be registered with Public Health.
  • Continue to supply RATs on request.
  • Persons who are COVID positive but asymptomatic can attend schools.
  • Mask wearing by adults is a personal choice. Mask wearing indoors for 7 days after testing positive for COVID is recommended. It is good practice for those who are immunocompromised to wear a mask in situations where they cannot socially distance.
  • In pleasant weather, encourage the opening of windows.
  • Public Health does not expect that the current settings for schools will change prior to the end of term 4.
  • The measures set out in CET's COVID-19 Safety Plan V16 still apply.

Thank you for your support and co-operation.

The Season of Advent
On Sunday the second candle of the Advent Wreath was burning bright. In the Christmas story the angels appeared to the shepherds and called “Peace on earth.” Jesus also gives us peace. He died for us so that we may live and so that we know God our Father. This gives us peace. We give peace to each other, knowing we all come from God’s family. The peace of God allows us to look at others as God’s people and show them love and compassion.

Vinnies Christmas Appeal - Last Week
The St Vincent de Paul Christmas Appeal are in desperate need of items of food in particular special Christmas food items such as bon bons that would make a family’s Christmas Day special and different from an everyday meal. St Vincents would also like any donations of non-perishable food items to restock their pantry for the Christmas and holiday season. In order to support those in need we are collecting food for those who are not as fortunate as we are this Christmas season. Collection boxes are located in the school foyer.

State Basketball Championships
Over the weekend we had two teams represent our school exceptionally well during the 2022 Basketball Tasmania State Primary School Championships.  Our Grade 3/4 Boys played fantastically over the weekend.  They played Norwood Primary in the Grand Final and went down by a single point!  Our Grade 5/6 Girls had an outstanding weekend as well, defeating their arch rivals, Spreyton, in the Semi-Final, only to match up against an old foe in Corpus Christi in the final.  With only 6 players our girls pushed their opposition right to the very end and only went down by 2 points!  Well done to both teams on representing our school so well.  Our community is very proud of you all!

Policy in Focus

In our Policy in Focus section we are sharing the Tasmanian Catholic Education Commission policy - Outdoor Play and Learning Policy.  This policy was approved by the Tasmanian Catholic Education Commission on 24 July 2018, and came into effect 27 July 2018.
The purpose of this policy is to support the provision and use of play spaces within our schools and to encourage positive learning experiences outside of the classroom.  The intent of the Policy is to ensure all parties are aware of their obligations in providing inspiring play spaces and rich outdoor learning experiences to enable students to grow and develop to their full potential in accordance with our Gospel values while ensuring the safest possible environment for those experiences.  A key aim of the Policy is to reinvigorate play spaces as areas for learning and adventure with reasonable and appropriately identified, managed risk-taking whilst ensuring Work Health and Safety (WHS) requirements are met.

We encourage you to read through and explore the policy.
