Mrs seagar's Reflection

Principal

"Collaboration in the development of the whole person and of every human being is in fact a duty of all towards all,  and must be shared by the four parts of the world: East and West, North and South; or, as we say today, by the different "worlds." If, on the contrary, people try to achieve it in only one part, or in only one world, they do so at the expense of the others; and, precisely because the others are ignored, their own development becomes exaggerated and misdirected."
John Paul II 1987

Welcome everyone to Week 5

Such wise words from John Paul II still apply 34 years after they were written.

Catholic Social Teaching which draws on Scripture, tradition, reason, and experience to address issues of social, economic and ecological justice is a vehicle to achieve the flourishing of all people. The Catholic Church has a history of social teaching that goes back centuries and still today it provides a compelling challenge to us all, for living responsibly and building a just society. Modern Catholic Social Teaching has evolved over time in response to the challenges of the day. It is the foundation of the mission and values of many Catholic Services.

The key principles of Catholic Social Teaching are:
• Preferential option for the poor
• Dignity of the human person
• Care for our common home
• Subsidiarity and participation
• The common good
• Solidarity

It is easy to see how we can apply these principles to all of our actions, decisions and interactions that we make personally, as a community, as a nation and as a world.

Last week on August 9 was International Day of Indigenous Peoples.  As Catholic Social Teaching principles apply to all persons including indigenous persons worldwide we can see how these principles, if applied to all, would allow inclusion, participation and sharing of all social and economic benefits. There are over 476 million indigenous peoples living in 90 countries across the world, accounting for 6.2 percent of the global population. Indigenous peoples are the holders of a vast diversity of unique cultures, traditions, languages and knowledge systems. They, as we know in Australia, have a special relationship with their lands and hold diverse concepts of development based on their own worldviews and priorities.  It is beholden to us all to genuinely participate with and to form partnerships that foster equal opportunities and respect the rights, dignity and freedoms of all.

God Bless

Carol

Flags at Our Lady of Lourdes
The School Captains wished to share with the community the meaning of our 3 flags of Australia now raised daily at Our Lady of Lourdes.

Australia has three official flags: the Australian National Flag, the Australian Aboriginal Flag and the Torres Strait Islander Flag.

The Australian National Flag is blue, white and red. It has three important parts:
  • The flag of Great Britain, known as the Union Jack, is in the top left corner. The flag represents our history of British settlement.
  • The Commonwealth Star is under the Union Jack. This star has seven points, one point for each of the six states and one for the territories.
  • The Southern Cross, on the right, is a group of stars we see in the southern sky.
The Australian Aboriginal Flag is black, red and yellow. It has three important parts, and the most common interpretation of the colours is:
  • The top half is black and represents the Aboriginal people of Australia.
  • The bottom half is red and represents the earth and a spiritual relation to the land.
  • The yellow circle represents the sun.
The Torres Strait Islander Flag is green, blue, black and white.
  • The green stripes represent the land.
  • The blue panel in the centre represents the sea.
  • The black lines represent the Torres Strait Islander people.
  • The white dancer’s headdress in the centre is a symbol for all Torres Strait Islanders.
  • The points of the white star represent the island groups in the Torres Strait.
  • The colour white is a symbol of peace.
