MRs seagar's Reflection

principal

Be eager in your desires but humbly patient in their accomplishment.

Go on with courage and strength.
Mary Mackillop.

Welcome everyone to Week 5.

Strategic Response
It is very pleasing to be able to present to you as our educational community our progress against our strategic plan for 2023. The staff at OLOL have been courageous in setting high goals for the learning for all students in all areas of school life. Equally important is the wellbeing of our whole community. Underpinning all of our goals, actions and achievements is the living out of the Gospel values, each and every day.

Goal: Develop Quality Educators Who Cause High Levels of Learning for All Through Explicit Instruction and Structured Inquiry
  • All teachers have taken on the Science of Learning pedagogies promoted in the CET Insight project.
  • 4 staff have been trained by a COG Learn Coach in the Science of Learning Pedagogies and will lead and coach staff as Instructional Leaders Teaching Practice( ILTP) in 2024.
  • Initialit is in its 2nd year of use at OLOLO,  with outstanding growth in learning to read for all students.  Most students in Prep are now reaching 98% - 100% in mastery of  their reading skills.  Gr 1 reading results reflect a similar trend with  most students attaining over 85% with many in the 90% and above in the mastery of reading skills.  Gr 2 also have had very strong comprehension summative data with most students again reaching 80% and above.
  • SPELLING  Mastery taught every school day in small groups aligned to the spelling need of the students, with strong results in the PAT testing reflecting the impact of the  new ‘Spelling Mastery’ Program. This growth means that next year there will be less streaming as students have reached targeted grade goals.
  • WALKTHRU teaching pedagogies taken on by OLOL and align to Insight are proactively being used by staff in teaching.
  • Continued Professional Learning Communities (PLC) meet each week in grade teams  for all planning and assessment.
Goal: Support the Wellbeing of All Members of our Community:
  • Learning Plan meetings for students with additional needs continue to enable students to achieve to their full potential.
  • Parent meetings continue to be regular and strengthen the school-parent partnership.
  • Care Team meetings ensure students are fully supported with ‘wrap around’ allied health assistance.
  • Counsellor availability is a fully utilised resource with additional hours being prioritised at OLOL.
  • Specific teaching of Social Emotional Learning (SEL) continues in order to enable students to have the  micro-social skills that enable them to be fully functioning members of our community.
  • wingani continues to be a space where students can regulate when needed.
  • Pastoral Care and Discipline/Behaviour Engagement policy is currently being reviewed by staff for presentation to the community at the beginning of 2024.
  • Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) is an embedded practice at OLOL.
Goal: Live out Discipleship at OLOL
  • Whole School Prayer (WSP) and Masses continue to be faith-filled opportunities for the community to come together as Catholics.
  • Instructional Leader Religious Education (ILRE) has had it’s inaugral year of implementation and has proved to be supportive of best teaching practices in RE in the classroom.
  • The School Junior Joeys organised the Easter Egg Guessing Competition, sold recycled bookmarks, facilitated tea towels and aprons as well as a ‘late night in’; all to raise funds for Grans Van.   They also created and performed a play about Mary Mackillop, for our Founders Day in August.  They were involved in community service for the Parish garden in planting potatoes as well as the Vinnies Drive.
  • Daily Class Prayer is an integral part of the day at OLOL.
  • Weekly Staff Prayer is a much valued time for staff to come together in prayer each week.
  • Charism Awards each week reflect the student’s awareness of how to live out compassion, humility, simplicity, dignity, justice and trust in God.

God bless

Carol

RE NEWS
Catholic Social Justice
These Catholic Social Justice  teachings are crucial to all Catholic organisations and underpin our mission as a Catholic school. It is important that we all have a greater understanding of CST’s to help us to support our students, families and our wider community.

Below is a diagram that explains these teachings well.

School news

Fish Free School Zone & Nut Awareness
Can all parents be vigilant about enforcing our fish free school zone and nut awareness.

These foods can contain fish:

  • Fried rice, spring rolls and paella with fish specifically.
  • Dishes that are often prepared with fish-based sauces, like oyster sauce.
  • Sushi.
  • Salad dressings.
  • Sauces, like steak and Worcestershire.
  • Seafood soups and broths.
  • Spreads like taramasalata

Uniform Expectations
Can all parents and carers  please ensure that:
  • Students' socks are white or navy blue with the Sports Uniform (the school is moving to navy blue).
  • No logos on socks.
  • Black (polishable) shoes with the formal uniform.
  • Shirts can be worn out with the boys Summer Uniform.
  • No necklaces or fancy earrings - just plain gold or silver studs.

Picking up Children Early
Our Lady of Lourdes reminds parents to provide advance notice if you are picking up your child early.   An email to [email protected] is the best communication method. Phone call is also an option. It allows for advance preparation if the office staff are given significant advance notice as organising students to leave class or specialist lessons can take some time.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Playing in the Playground After School
It is our school expectation that if parents choose to allow their children to play in our playground after school then it is their responsibility to supervise and support them to be Respectful, Responsible and Safe through direct behaviour support of their own child and modelling of appropriate adult behaviour.  Effectively, you are responsible for your child after you have collected them at the end of the day.  Although the weather is beginning to change (slowly!) and it is lovely in the after school sun, our gates will continue to be locked at 3:30pm each day.  We do ask that you please ensure you have left our school grounds by then.

Head Knocks at School
If your child presents to First Aid with a head knock, we will assess and treat with ice. If they appear fine your child will go back to class where they will be monitored by Staff. The office will send you an SMS so you are aware and able to check in with your child when they get home. If we are at all worried about your child we will phone you so they can be collected.

School Gates
The school Steele Street gates are now locked from 3:30 pm each day.
If requiring any assistance after this time, please come to the Stewart Street school entrance and knock for assistance.

National Office for Child Safety - One Talk at a Time
The National Office for Child Safety recently launched ‘One Talk at a Time’, a national awareness raising and behavioural change campaign on child sexual abuse.
One Talk at a Time aims to protect children and young people from sexual abuse by helping adults understand that child sexual abuse is preventable and encouraging them to have ongoing, proactive, preventative conversations with children, young people and other adults in their lives.
The campaign is a key measure under the National Strategy to Prevent and Respond to Child Sexual Abuse 2021-2030 and fulfils a recommendation of the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse.

Online Safety - eSafety Commissioner's Office Resources
Picture
People usually know how to keep themselves safe offline, but it's not always the case when we go online. In our latest initiative, we compare online safety to everyday objects that keep you safe – just like eSafety does when you go online.

When it comes to online safety, we can help. We educate Australians about online safety risks and help to remove harmful content such as cyberbullying of children and young people, adult cyber abuse, image-based abuse and illegal and restricted content.

The eSafety Commissioner can support with:
  • Advice for parents, kids and young people on staying safe online
  • Classroom materials and professional training on online safety for educators
  • Resources to keep vulnerable communities safe
  • Investigating reports of serious online harm and help with removal of this content.
