Welcome everyone to Week 4

This week at OLOL we are celebrating the Feast Day of St Mary of the Cross Mackillop (8th August). Mary Mackillop alongside Father Julian Tenison Woods founded the Sisters of St Joseph who in turn established Our Lady of Lourdes, Devonport in 1891.

The Sisters of St Joseph, so named because they viewed St Joseph as a real companion who shared their enterprise with God, guiding their journey every step of the way.  And what a journey that has proved to be. Mary MacKillop set up 106 houses of St Joseph educating children in need across Australia and New Zealand.  These schools aimed to overcome poverty, illiteracy and social isolation.  As a very practical person Mary set the direction for all staff working in Josephite Schools – action before words: We must teach more by example than by word (1867).

The earliest official document of the Institute of the Sisters of St Joseph written by Father Julian in co-operation with Mary Mackillop in 1867 stated:
The sisters must be poor, humble, and consider themselves lest among all religious orders, studying to keep their lives hidden in God as the life of St Joseph was.

The sisters were encouraged to imitate Joseph in their humanly friendly and happy manner with the children they were to teach: They are to make themselves the companions of the children.
It is this word companion and the humble nature of the Sisters of St Joseph that still lives in the schools, one of those is Our Lady of Lourdes.  In educating our students all staff work alongside students and will always respond when they see a need.

The legacy of Mary MacKillop lives on not only in our schools but in the work of ‘Mary MacKillop Today’.
https://www.marymackilloptoday.org.au/
Through this organisation the vision of Australia’s first Saint and of the Sisters of Saint Joseph is being realised where the Sisters work in partnership to help create generational change through the teaching of practical life skills to women, men and children in Australia and beyond. The core principles of ‘Mary MacKillop Today’ are Human Dignity, Common Good, Participation and Subsidiarity and Option for the Poor.
They work with local communities in Australia and internationally (Peru, Timor-Leste, Papua New Guinea, Fiji) through enabling access to learning opportunities in the areas of education, health, financial inclusion and livelihoods to share practical life skills for self-sufficiency.

With Mary MacKillop’s deep faith in God’s guidance she “did all she could with the means at her disposal and calmly left the rest to God”,  resulting in Josephite Schools and organisations that continue her work today.

God Bless

Carol

Emergency practice
Within the next 2 weeks we will hold an unannounced emergency practice with staff & students, to test our response to a potential scenario that staff identify a threat warranting the school go into lockdown (opposite to evacuation).
Like for fire evacuation drills, we recognised the worth to test this process. We have plans in place to make this practice as least disruptive as possible.  If you have queries you are welcome to call our Safety Officer Simon Natoli on 0400 105 476.
