We are Respectful
We are Responsible
We are Safe

Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School is located on the traditional lands of the Punnilerpanner people of the North Nation. We acknowledge and deeply respect the Palawa people, the Tasmanian Aboriginal Community, and all Elders past and present. We are committed to learning alongside our students and community in this place, and support the continued sharing of knowledge and culture.

Mrs seagar's  Reflection

principal

“No act of virtue can be great if it is not followed by advantage for others. So, no matter how much time you spend fasting, no matter how much you sleep on a hard floor and eat ashes and sigh continually, if you do no good to others, you do nothing great.”
John Chrysostom 349 – 407 AD
Welcome everyone to Week 4.

Our Lady of Lourdes is a Catholic Primary School and as such we practise many religious traditions in order to help us strengthen our faith. These traditions, along with scripture and Church teachings are the framework on which our faith stands. This Wednesday students and staff will participate in Ash Wednesday services, as a beginning to the season of Lent, where we are reminded that Lent is about prayer, reflection and service. We are called to deepen our spiritual lives through the practices of fasting, prayer and almsgiving. It is a time to give in return – of ourselves, of who we are and of what we possess and to do this humbly and quietly.

The traditional ‘giving up’ (penance) of things during Lent isn't about doing something for yourself to make you feel bad. It's about learning from Christ (prayer and reflection) to put all of our hopes and trust in His word and to love and serve our neighbour in whatever ways they need us (service). Pope Francis in 2015 expressed the idea that we should only give up something for Lent only if it demonstrates compassion and enriches others.

The list below reimagines what Lent could be for you. Remember to make it count, not just an easy option.
Things to give up for Lent:
  • The phrase, "I can't even."
  • Rolling your eyes at your parents [or spouse or co-workers, for older folks]
  • Not smiling at strangers
  • Trolling online
  • Being sarcastic
  • Swearing
  • Being embarrassed when you need help from a therapist in order to live a happy, full life
  • Watch less TV
  • Give up fast food
  • Grumpiness, blame, superiority, gossip, vanity, busyness, cynicism……

Things to start doing for Lent:
  • Give away something every single day, be it time, money, or something you own
  • Volunteer once a week
  • Give away some clothes to a charity or someone in need
  • Use your weekends to babysit for free
  • Make a list of people who have touched your life and write one each day with a letter of appreciation
  • Talk, play board games instead to TV or computer games
  • Give to Caritas to help others be able to help themselves
  • Cook together
  • Early rising
  • Forgiving
  • Random Acts of Kindness
  • Listening
  • Being grateful

2023 NAPLAN Grades 3 & 5

2023 NAPLAN Grades 3 & 5

Students in Grades 3 & 5 will be sitting NAPLAN between 15 and 27 March 2023.

The National Assessment Program-Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) assesses literacy and numeracy skills that students are already learning at school. On its own, NAPLAN is not a test that can be studied for, and students are not expected to do so.

NAPLAN is just one aspect of a school’s assessment and reporting process – it does not replace ongoing assessments made by teachers about student performance; however, students and parents may use individual results to discuss progress with teachers.

This is the first year NAPLAN will be held in March, having previously taken place in May. This change was made so school systems would have access to results earlier in the school year, so they can be used to inform teaching and learning plans for the remainder of the year.

Why NAPLAN is conducted online
NAPLAN online provides a better assessment and more precise results.  One of the main benefits of NAPLAN online is that it uses tailored (or adaptive) testing. This means that students receive questions better suited to their abilities, so they can show what they know and can do.  Online testing also allows us to provide a wide range of accessibility options to support students with disability to access NAPLAN.  Feedback from students is that they find the online test more engaging.  Please note that students in Year 3 complete the Writing Test on paper.

Please contact Mr Farr if you have any further queries regarding NAPLAN or your child's participation in NAPLAN.

Social & emotional learning 2023

This year at Our Lady of Lourdes we are having a strong emphasis in learning 'resilience'.

Here are two inspirational quotes Grade 5 are using as a reference point:

"Sometimes you have to accept you can't win all of the time"
Lionel Messi

"Mistakes are the portals of discovery."
"Mistakes help you grow."

James Joyce
