Welcome to Week 10

The term and concept of wellbeing has been in the Australian Curriculum for many years now and there is a continuum provided of social and personal capabilities, that shows clearly the development of students in self awareness, self management, social awareness and social management.  Teachers use this in their planning for the wellbeing of students.
https://www.australiancurriculum.edu.au/media/1078/general-capabilities-personal-and-social-capability-learning-continuum.pdf

Student wellbeing can be defined as a sustainable state of positive mood and attitude, resilience and satisfaction with self, relationships and experiences at school. (Australian Catholic University 2008, p. 66). However wellbeing is not a straight forward negative/positive dichotomy, nor a continuum. Viewed as a holistic concept, wellbeing is best understood as the complex interplay between internal (subjective wellbeing) and external factors, and how individuals respond to these (OECD 2014). Wellbeing is relative to the individual and changes over time depending on their personal circumstances. https://www.aitsl.edu.au/research/spotlights/wellbeing-in-australian-schools

The key takeaways from this report are the importance and significance of the work that schools undertake is supporting and developing learner wellbeing because wellbeing is crucial to academic achievement. At OLOL we have a number of wellbeing supports:

  1. Classroom teaching from the Australian Curriculum as mentioned above.
  2. Targeted Teaching Team that focus on improving any gaps in student learning and this in turns assists self-esteem.
  3. Rumbles Quest data that is used to support any student that has shown a need in:
  •  Attachment to school
  •  Emotional and behavioural self-regulation
  •  Social confidence with respect to peer relationships
  •  Supportive environments and relationships with caring adults.
  4.  Student Support Team who plan, teach and assess for the social and emotional as well as academic                         needs of our students.
   5.  The teaching of religion assists each person with a belief in something greater and
  •  Instils goodwill and the golden rule (do unto others).
  •  Promotes ethics and good morals in life based on the scriptures.
  •  Inspires inner strength and courage to do the right thing.
  •  Sends the message of forgiveness.
  •  Encourages an appreciation of religious art and music.
  •  Provides a sense of community and belonging.
  •  Promotes selfless service and gratitude to God.
   6.   The School Chaplain assists all school families in times of need.
   7.  The School Counsellors target specific needs of our students to enable more balance for them in their daily lives, socially and emotionally.
   8.  Finally and equally important as all of the above is the pastoral care that all staff show to our students.    We are a Josephite School and Mary MacKillop’s saying of ‘never see a need without doing something about it’ is part of who we are and lived out daily.

Connectedness is critically important for our wellbeing and the community and sense of belonging at OLOL is visible and always evolving. Students develop their interpersonal skills as they experience success in collaborating, conflict resolution and communicating within a supportive and trusting community.

OLOL is an environment that is spiritually, socially, physically and emotionally safe for our students with shared respect, shared meaning and shared knowledge with the shared experience of learning together in a connected environment.

Mr Zolati's Retirement
I wish to announce that Mr Adrian Zolati will be remaining on Long Service Leave for Term 2 and then will retire following this leave.  It is therefore with some sadness that I announce Mr Adrian Zolati will be retiring from OLOL effectively from the end of next term.

Mr Zolati has given 25 years of loyal service to OLOL, mostly in the capacity of a class teacher.  He was one of the first teachers in the initial version of an Intervention Team at OLOL, which has remained with the school in one form or another, such is the impact of this model. Mr Zolati was a Performing Arts teacher as well and his enthusiasm, musical knowledge and experience ensured vibrant teaching and learning in these classes. Mr Zolati also revamped and reengaged the Early Years Program in Performing Arts.  Over these years Mr Zolati would have taught more than 1000 students.  Mr Zolati has been a reliable drummer for the school band for many years and enriched the music during Whole School Prayer.  He has also served as the school union rep for some of his time at OLOL, supporting staff in ensuring teaching conditions always remain fair and reasonable.

On your behalf I wish Mr Zolati all the best in his retirement. May it be filled with plenty of family time, rest and relaxation.

God Bless
Carol

COVID-19 Update

This week we have had 25 positive COVID-19 test results in the school.

Please notify the School Office ASAP if your child tests positive to COVID-19.  The School Office is the first point of contact for student attendance/absence and the answering machine is always on.

Early notification allows us to manage COVID-19 cases in a timely manner by;
  • Ensuring that classes receive the necessary cleaning
  • Notifying families of cases in their child/children's classes
  • Being able to accurately track and monitor cases within the school community.
  • Plan, prepare & manage class and school outbreaks.

OLOL is following all the requirements for managing these cases as advised by the Department of Health and Catholic Education Tasmania.

WSH – Covid Changes
  • If, within twelve weeks following release from isolation, the person comes into contact with someone with COVID-19 and they are not immunocompromised or symptomatic, they will not need to isolate.  This means that there is now a 12 week immunity for isolation and quarantine.
  • Public Health expects staff and students to undertake rapid antigen testing as per Public Health’s outbreak management guidelines, however Public Health has advised this is not a prerequisite to be able to attend school.

Thank you for your support and co-operation.

RE NEWs

Lent
We are coming towards the end of Lent and preparing for Holy Week next week. This week we are still focussing on:
  • Prayer: During Lent, we are encouraged to pray more.
  • Fasting: During Lent, we give up the food we love as a sacrifice.
  • Almsgiving: During Lent, we must think about giving more to those who are in need. We can give money to charities, give old clothes, make hampers for people in need. Collect and save money to give to Project Compassion.
Lenten Prayer
Stay with me, Lord, for it is necessary to have You present so that I do not forget You.  You know how easily I abandon You.
Stay with me, Lord, because I am weak and I need Your strength, that I may not fall so often.
Stay with me, Lord, for You are my life, and without You, I am without fervor.
Stay with me, Lord, for You are my light, and without You, I am in darkness.
Stay with me, Lord, to show me Your will.
Stay with me, Lord, so that I hear Your voice and follow You.
Stay with me, Lord, for I desire to love You very much, and always be in Your company.
Stay with me, Lord, if You wish me to be faithful to You.
Stay with me, Lord, for as poor as my soul is, I want it to be a place of consolation for You, a nest of love.
Fifth Week of Lent
(Week beginning Monday 4th April)This week through Project Compassion we learn about Shaniella who is attending a vocational school in the Solomon Islands supported by Caritas Australia Solomon Islands (CASI).
Not long after Shaniella started, the school was hit by a landslide, flooding, and a cyclone, all in quick succession.
With your kind support, CASI helped install water tanks, restoring clean water access to nearby schools, health centres and the wider community. Training was held in agricultural skills to help boost the school community’s food security, as well as in environmental risk management and emergency responses.
Now, Shaniella can complete her skills training, with enough water and food to eat, and improved sanitation. She is improving her ability to earn an income, learning skills which will expand her job opportunities. Students are also better prepared to respond when disaster strikes.
Watch a short film about Shaniella’s story here.
Please support Project Compassion: lent.caritas.org.au

Junior Joeys
Easter Egg Jar
Don’t forget to bring in some money to guess how many easter eggs are in the jar. The Junior Joey’s will be available before school this week to take guesses.
Coin Line
The Junior Joey’s will be organising a Coin Line on the Wednesday of Holy Week.  All classes will bring out their boxes and line up the money in them to see which class has the longest line.
The Junior Joeys then collect the money raised for Project Compassion Go Junior Joey’s.

Dates to Remember:
The Celebration of Reconciliation
The Sacrament of Reconciliation will be celebrated on the 6th April at Our Lady of Lourdes Church at 7.00 p.m. Please keep the children in your prayers as they prepare.
Project Compassion

This is the last week to collect money for the less fortunate. Money boxes will be collected next week and the money will be sent to Project Compassion. Please dig deep and give!

Holy Week
Holy Week begins next week and is the pinnacle of the Catholic Tradition and during class time the children will be delving into the stories of Jesus’ last week in his ministry, the Paschal Mystery of Jesus life, death and resurrection. The children will be presenting and following the story of Jesus through Holy Week stories, meditations, prayers, liturgies and activities in classes.

HIGH LEVELS OF LEARNING FOR ALL
ENABLING, ENGAGING & ENRICHING LEARNING

At Our Lady of Lourdes we have multiple layers the learning - in all contexts and areas - of our students is our priority.  This learning might be social, behavioural, academic, emotional etc, but we strive to meet the needs of our students by supporting their growth from whatever point they are at.

As many of you would be aware, this year we have moved away from our Grade Teacher Model and have developed a multi-faceted model of support and intervention.  Over the coming weeks we will take a more in depth look into each of the roles, and humans that fill them, within our new model.

Numeracy Key Teacher

Picture
As identified in previous newsletters, Catholic Education Tasmania has a key focus on Literacy this year, as it is the beginning of the 5 year strategic plan.  At Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School we support this initiative, however we have also identified an opportunity to improve our teaching and learning practices in Numeracy.

Mrs Alison Broomhall is our Numeracy Key Teacher.  Mrs Broomhall has strong passion and a high level of skill and understanding in the field of Numeracy, particularly in regards to teaching and learning with the Australian Curriculum: Mathematics.  Mrs Broomhall works with teachers to enrich and further develop their pedagogy to ensure they have the most effective impact on student learning as possible.  This work is undertaken through, but not limited to:
  • Modelling
  • Mentoring
  • Observing & Providing Feedback
  • Curating resources and synthesising research

Mrs Broomhall has already worked with a number of classes to model lessons involving open ended, complex tasks that cater for the diversity of all learners.  A distinct trademark of Mrs Broomhall's maths lessons is the 'struggle' that all children experience as they attempt to solve problems using a range of strategies.  It is through this 'struggle' or challenge that our students find new strategies and solutions to the problems they are set and hence, develop as mathematicians.

Mrs Broomhall's passionate and focused leadership is essential to our school achieving high levels of learning for all, particularly in regards to the area of Numeracy.

New research into Catholic school parents' perspective
Picture
New research by Catholic School Parents Australia (CSPA) aims to capture parent perspectives on issues of concern to help inform future federal government policy.
“We will be gathering evidence nationally on existing and emerging issues of concern for Catholic school families, especially issues that impact on their children’s health, wellbeing and learning,” CSPA chair, Karl Rodrigues said.
“We are keen to hear parent perspectives from a cross-section of families including those with children experiencing challenges around learning and from families with children in remote school settings.”
The research will incorporate surveys, parent/carer interviews and strategic reference group discussions.
“We will be working with our CSPA state and territory members and the Australian Research Alliance for Children and Youth to undertake this research across Terms 2 and 3 this year,” Karl said.
“It’s an exciting opportunity that will shed critical insights into how to enhance parent engagement in student learning, and will no doubt capture the challenges the COVID-19 pandemic has placed on school communities.”

CSPA is the national representative body for parents/carers with children and young people in Catholic schools. Working with Catholic school principals and parents, CSPA seeks to better understand how parents and carers can work in partnership with school staff to benefit the health, wellbeing and learning of students.
Learn more about work already undertaken on the Parent Engagement website and watch out for new video resources which will be available by early 2023. CSPA acknowledges the funding received from the Australian Government for this work.
Find out more about CSPA here.
