Welcome everyone to Week 1.
I wish to thank the 49 families who shared their stories of association with Our Lady of Lourdes. Many grandparents and parents were ex pupils, with their history going back to 1930, 1961, 1964, 1971, 1978, 1981, 1984, 1988, 1994 and 2008.
The common theme from all of these oral histories was the kindness witnessed at OLOL over these years as well as developing young people who have taken on the values and charism of OLOL. Another strong theme was the individual support students received and still receive at OLOL as lived out by our following of ‘Never see a need without doing something about it’ (Mary MacKillop).
Memories that emerged were of: excursions, eisteddfods, Book Week, Founder’s Day, Pyjama Day, classes leading church, the pit in the library, Peddler's Parade, fairs, Nativity plays, school concerts, time capsule at the 100 years celebration, elastics and four square, chalkboards and erasers, ink pot holders and individual desks, videotapes, gas heaters, writing AMDG on every page, cleaning the windows with newspaper and vinegar, tuckshop (vegemite roll was 6 pence), production of The Elephant’s child, liturgical movement for the School Mass and Weekend Mass.
All contributors agreed that the learning community at OLOL has created respectful and loyal community members with the history of the Josephite Order resonating strongly over the years.
As we celebrate 130 years of Catholic Education at OLOL we are indebted to Mary MacKillop and Julian Tenison Woods for beginning the Josephite Order which in turn set up many schools for children, OLOL being one of these. The school's charisms of dignity for all, humility, compassion, simplicity, justice and trust in God are evident in the words, and lives of those parents and grandparents who contributed.
In 1991 Sister Helen Hickey wrote these words to celebrate 100 years and their essence is a reminder of how the Josephite Charism continues at OLOL today:

The Rosary
The repetition in the Rosary is meant to lead one into restful and contemplative prayer related to each Mystery. The gentle repetition of the words helps us to enter into the silence of our hearts, where Christ's spirit dwells. The Rosary can be said privately or with a group.

School news
Swimming - Term 4
The Grade 2 - 4 Swimming Program will commence in Week 2 of this Term and the Prep & Grade 1 Water Awareness Program in Week 3. Information has been sent out via the compass parent portal to all families. Please be aware that parents are not able to attend the Nixon Street Pool (Prep & Grade 1) due to Covid social distancing requirements.
Pink Day - Breast Cancer Awareness
On Friday 22 October we will be holding a fundraiser day for the McGrath Foundation. Children are encouraged to wear 'pink' and bring a gold coin donation. All monies raised will remain here on the North West Coast to support research and care for those diagnosed with cancer.
Class Structure 2022
As in previous years, if any parents have valid concerns for class allocation in 2022, please make a time to meet with Carol Seagar between Tuesday 12th October and Friday 5th November. Class allocation involves a variety of factors including balancing academic, social and emotional needs. Our staff are in the best position to objectively do this. We do appreciate working with you, the first educators of your child and you are welcome to meet and share any valid concerns with me as part of this process. We do state that this process does take us considerable time and discernment, therefore any parent requests received after 5th November will not be considered.
OLOL Athletics Carnival (Girdlestone Park East Devonport) - Tuesday 2nd November
The OLOL Athletics Carnival will be held on Tuesday 2nd November at Girdlestone Park East Devonport for all students in Kinder - Grade 6.
This year's Athletics Carnival will follow the same format as last year. This means that parents will not be allowed to move around events with their child’s group. Viewing will be from the grand stand or around the boundary fence. Parents will not be allowed on the ground at any time.
Please see the map for entry and exit points and parking.
The Athletics Carnival is a Level One Event under the Tasmania Government Framework for COVID-19 Safe Events. This means that there will be:
Girdlestone Park is the access point for the COVID testing site. The only entry into Girdlestone Park for the Athletics Carnival is via the football ticket box gate. It will be a single entry for vehicles on the eastern side of the box and pedestrian access via the western gate. There is limited parking in the carpark. Please do not enter the COVID testing site unless you require testing. There is no parking at the East Devonport Recreation Centre.
Contract Tracing - All patrons will need to sign in using the Check in TAS App.
Hygiene Practices -

Collection of Children
Can parents please make contact with the school if there are people, relatives or friends that are not permitted to collect children or if they come on site is a concern for families.

Medical Students
If your Child suffers from Asthma, the Office requires Asthma Medical Plans that are signed and provided by a Doctor for 2021. Please provide to the Office if required. All other Medical plans need to be for the current year. Could current medical plans be bought into the office as soon as possible please.

- Orientation Day: Tuesday November 30th, 8.40am - 3.00pm
