Mr farr's Reflection

deputy Principal

"Get the right people on the bus and in the right seats."
James C Collins
Welcome everyone to Week 3!  It's quite ridiculous how fast these first weeks have gone!

One of our main, overarching goals at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School is to achieve high levels of learning for all.  This is inclusive of students, staff and our parent community.

This aim does need some unpacking.  It is not solely about achieving high results / top marks on standardised tests such as NAPLAN or PAT, nor is it about aiming for every child to achieve an ‘A’ on their report card.  While these things are nice, and of course desirable, what constitutes high levels of learning for our students in particular, is GROWTH.  Has each child achieved a years GROWTH after a year’s learning and teaching?

I’m sure this seems reasonably obvious - of course a child will make a year’s growth after a full year of schooling - but it is not necessarily the case.  Often our students will achieve high results, but the growth they have made from one year to the next does not reflect a full years growth.   And then sometimes it is the reverse, a student might make a full year’s growth, however they may still be developing in their understanding of core concepts.

This year we have developed a number of positions, structures and systems to support our students to achieve high levels of learning through working directly with them, by developing the pedagogical practice of our staff, and through providing supports to families.

To visualise this we have developed the below model.
Picture
This is all about, as the quote above states, getting the right people on the bus and in the right seats.  For instance Mrs Broomhall is a wonderful teacher with a passion for Mathematics who posses natural leadership qualities and behaviours.  To be able to have Alison be our Numeracy Key Teacher where she models effective pedagogy for staff, can observe other teacher's lessons and provide feedback etc is invaluable.  Mrs Cornell has returned to our school after a year travelling and has taken up the role of Early Years Coordinator.  Nicole's experience as an early years teacher, particularly in Grade 2, Prep and Kinder as well as her depth of knowledge and understanding of pedagogy and leadership enables her to guide and support staff develop greater understanding of effective teaching and learning practice, and in turn, improve the learning outcomes for our students.  These are just two examples of how we are striving to create the best environment possible to enable, engage and enrich our learners so that they can achieve high levels of learning.

Over the coming weeks we will explore each of these roles further to provide clarity and understanding to you, our parent community, regarding how our school operates and what happens between dropping your child off at school in the morning and collecting them at the end of the day.
Kind regards

Stu

How are we staying covid safe?

Further to the letter parents and carers received on Tuesday 25th January from Catholic Education Tasmania, click here to access, outlines of further contextual arrangements for Our Lady of Lourdes, in our attempt to place in mitigation factors with the Omicron Variant of the Coronavirus, for the next 5 weeks.

Persons with COVID-19 symptoms must isolate for a minimum of 7 days. If the person still has symptoms on day 7 then they must continue their isolation for a further 3 days.

PLEASE NOTIFY THE SCHOOL OFFICE IF YOU CHILD RETURNS A POSITIVE COVID—19 TEST.

  • All classrooms are cleaned daily as required by our Catholic Education Tasmania, Covid Plan, created with direction from the Department of Health.
  • High touch services, including electronic equipment are cleaned daily through out the school.
  • In a notified case of Covid-19 a deeper clean tasks place.  This clean can take up to 2 hours and we are aiming to do these as soon as we know, so that classes can return to their learning space in a timely manner.
  • Our school cleaners have been employed for more hours each week and are available to clean from early morning to late afternoon. I thank our Cleaners: Sue Moody and Lynette Kenny, for their flexibility and availability in serving our school community during these demanding times.
  • Interactions between ECE and Primary Students have been kept to a minimum due to the planned separation of these students (Early Childhood and Primary) at beginning of the day, during the day in moving to Specialist lessons and end of the day exits.
  • All windows and doors are open during learning time to allow for ventilation

Literate Learners for Life
Every Student, Every Subject, Every Year

Literate Learners for Life is Catholic Education Tasmania’s commitment to developing the literacy and vocabulary skills of every student, in every subject, every year.

Launched prior to the 2022 school year with a series of three system development days, we believe that this whole-system science-based approach to literacy, in particular the teaching of phonics, will set our students up for success in not just literacy, but all areas of life.

Noting the unique context presented in Tasmania, including low rates of adult functional literacy and declining NAPLAN scores across the system, CET recognised the need for a dedicated literacy strategy to address these concerns.

Initial Lit Program for Prep - Grade 2
As part of Catholic Education, Tasmania's literacy strategy 'Literate Learners for Life' Catholic Primary schools across the state are implementing Initial Lit.

"InitiaLit is an evidence-based whole-class literacy program providing all children with the essential core knowledge and strong foundations to become successful readers and writers. InitiaLit is a three-year program, covering the first three years of school (Foundation to Year 2)." (https://multilit.com/programs/initialit/)

As we begin our implementation of this resource, and as part of the broader CET Literacy Strategy, staff from across our school - Kinder, Prep, Grade 1 and Grade 2 teachers, members of our Targeted Teaching Team and our Literacy Practice Leader - have completed screeners to identify where each child from Prep to Grade 2 are at in regards to their literacy development.

The screener involves students reading a range of:
  • Regular words
  • Non-words
  • Extension words
  • Passages
  • Tricky words
  • Spelling words
and undertake
  • Sentence dictation.
  • Letter-sound knowledge activities
  • Reading words and sentences

Educators' administering the screener collect data on students' letter-sound knowledge, ability to recall common words, their ability to apply their letter-knowledge to decode unfamiliar words and general reading ability through a range of activities and strategies.

We encourage you to discuss your child's screener at our upcoming parent teacher evening.
