Are you using compass?

As you are aware Catholic Education Tasmania has moved to a new student record system called Compass. The Compass Program allows us to communicate with families directly through the Compass Parent Portal. The Compass Parent Portal is now our main communication tool. All parents will need to download the Compass App and ensure they are able to login.
Thank you to those families who have already taken up the Compass App and are successfully engaging with it and our school.

Mr farr's Reflection

Deputy principal

"The capacity to learn is the only insurance policy for the future."

Simon Breakspear

Welcome to Week 4.

Over the last few months I’ve been learning to play jazz guitar.  Although I can play guitar and am reasonably competent (shout out to Mr Gerry Peters) I wanted to learn something new that would be challenging and push me out of my comfort zone.

At first I went about learning in the same way I currently play guitar, I downloaded a tab (guitar sheet music), listened to a song and tried to play along with it.  However this just didn’t work and I would regularly find myself falling back into old habits, or playing my guitar in my own way after a few minutes of what could only be described as unfocused practice!

To make progress I had to commit to my goal more fully.  I found an online program that would guide me through a structured process with lessons, examples, audio files to listen to and play along with, and with plenty of markers to acknowledge my progress.  Once using this program it was challenging to get my head around terminologies that I haven’t used / heard since I first started playing in high school.  Then there’s been the multiple concepts that I have never been exposed to before as I don’t read music.  Finally I’ve had to ‘relearn’ rhythm patterns and timings to be able to play along to the tight timings and structures of jazz music.

I’ve committed to half an hour of dedicated jazz guitar practice each day.  This practice may be going over the same rhythm and chord progression for the entire time, or moving through the same scale over and over again.  It’s repetitive, but I can see, hear and feel myself making progress.

Through all of this I’m searching for mastery - or at least my approximation of it.  I have a level of skill and quality in mind that I am aspiring to and each time I sit down to practice, I am consciously aware of how far away I am from achieving that.  This is something that I simply understand and have awareness of.

Mastering a new skill or understanding is challenging.  The process of attaining mastery starts with identifying what that looks like.  For me with my guitar it’s something that I have defined personally, but if we think about this in the context of school and our children, mastery of a new skill or understanding is something that we need to define first as teachers and then communicate to our children.  We ask ‘What does mastery look like?’ and ‘How will we know our children have mastered this learning?’  In doing so teachers and children both have clarity in regards to the learning, which can then be broken down into points of progress.

At the beginning of each unit or learning sequence, particularly for English and Maths, our teachers and students discuss what the Learning Intention(s) is and what Success (Mastery) looks like.  As students move through the learning teachers are able to provide our children feedback as to the progress they are making toward mastery of the Success Criteria.  With this clarity we consistently see our children take ownership of their learning and strive to achieve success with the support and guidance of their teachers.

This afternoon we have parent teacher conferences.  This is an opportunity for you to share with your child’s teacher information about your child - who they are, their interests, personality, successes and challenges, and your best hopes for their schooling this year.

I look forward to continuing to work with your children and yourselves this year.

Regards,

Mr Stewart Farr
Deputy Principal
