Mrs gratton's  Reflection

Student support coordinator

Together may we give our children the roots to grow and the wings to fly.
Welcome everyone to Week 6.

Now that the term is well underway, students from Grades 1- 6 are undertaking Rumble’s Quest. Rumble’s Quest is a well-being assessment tool that provides a window into the pastoral care and well-being needs of our students.

Rumble’s Quest incorporates engaging tasks that challenge children to exercise executive skills such as working memory, cognitive flexibility, impulse and attention control and measures student responses across four important dimensions of child well-being:
  • Attachment to School
  • Self-Regulation
  • Social Confidence and Positive Relationships
  • Supportive Home Relationships
The student data gained from the completion of Rumble’s Quest allows schools and Catholic Education, as a system, to make informed decisions about how we best support student well-being. This measure of the nature of student need at Our Lady of Lourdes allows us to gain a clearer picture of how to elevate well-being and the social and emotional climate in our school.

As well-being spans community, school, and home environments; subsequently, everyone has a role to play in supporting our children’s social and emotional needs. We see Rumble’s Quest as one pathway to open up collaborative spaces bringing school and families together to help children more effectively. We recognise when communities are able to provide consistently supportive environments, children are more likely to feel connected, safe, and experience a sense of belonging that helps them develop and learn. We see family and school as partners in well-being. Working together to support our children to flourish into confident, positive and caring people with a strong sense of self, place and inner calm, and of being loved, respected, and valued.

We thank you for working in an ongoing partnership with us and welcome conversation as always.

Wishing you all a wonderful week.

Eve.

2023 NAPLAN Grades 3 & 5

2023 NAPLAN Grades 3 & 5

Students in Grades 3 & 5 will be sitting NAPLAN between 15 and 27 March 2023.

The National Assessment Program-Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) assesses literacy and numeracy skills that students are already learning at school. On its own, NAPLAN is not a test that can be studied for, and students are not expected to do so.

NAPLAN is just one aspect of a school’s assessment and reporting process – it does not replace ongoing assessments made by teachers about student performance; however, students and parents may use individual results to discuss progress with teachers.

This is the first year NAPLAN will be held in March, having previously taken place in May. This change was made so school systems would have access to results earlier in the school year, so they can be used to inform teaching and learning plans for the remainder of the year.

Why NAPLAN is conducted online
NAPLAN online provides a better assessment and more precise results.  One of the main benefits of NAPLAN online is that it uses tailored (or adaptive) testing. This means that students receive questions better suited to their abilities, so they can show what they know and can do.  Online testing also allows us to provide a wide range of accessibility options to support students with disability to access NAPLAN.  Feedback from students is that they find the online test more engaging.  Please note that students in Year 3 complete the Writing Test on paper.

Please contact Mr Farr if you have any further queries regarding NAPLAN or your child's participation in NAPLAN.

Social & emotional learning 2023

At Our Lady of Lourdes students are encouraged to learn about their feelings in order to regulate them:
 I can recognise my feelings
 I can name my feelings
I can regulate my red feelings
I can understand my feelings
I can express my feelings

The students become familiar with the quadrant below and where they are at any point in time.  No one quadrant is wrong; its about, recognising and  regulating these feelings to then come back to a centre of calm and control.

RE NEWS

Experience of Mass
Father Steven spoke to the Grade 4 students last week before they attended the 12:00 Mass and he explained the link between the Gospel story of the Last Supper and the link to Mass.
The students could recite the names of the Gospels to Father Steven: Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Father explained that the Gospels tell the life of Jesus and a passage is read at each Mass. It was explained that the Last Supper in the Gospels of  Matthew, Mark and Luke, tells of Jesus great love for us.
Father Steven shared with the students that he takes a moment before every Mass to think of something that he is grateful for; a quiet moment with God. This reminds him of how fortunate he is.
He went on to explain that God and Jesus want us to have God’s peace which ‘passes all understanding’ and if we wish this peace on someone else it is a great gift to give.  It is a challenge to wish someone who you find difficult the ‘peace of god’ and shows your generosity if you can give this. This peace is so important that it is mentioned in the Service of the Mass many times.  This peace is the harmony and calmness of body, mind, and spirit trusting, in the power and grace of God.
Father Steven finished with this beautiful statement: Mass is a prayer and a prayer is a conversation with God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit.

Thank you to Father Steven for leading our students in the knowledge, practices and experience of the Mass.

Caritas
For the next 40 days as Catholics we try to abide by prayer, fasting and almsgiving.

As part of almsgiving we are fundraising for Caritas, as we do each Lent.
Caritas works to end poverty and promote justice in countries throughout Africa, Asia, Australia, the Pacific, and the Middle East. Their work tackles global issues like food and water insecurity, national disaster readiness and gender-based violence. Caritas Australia is the Catholic Church’s international aid and development agency in Australia.  They are committed to working alongside the most vulnerable and addressing the imbalance of power by including the people affect in the decisions impacting their lives. Caritas’ vision is Justice, dignity and hope for humanity and all of God’s creation.

Policy in Focus

This week in our 'Policy in Focus' section of the Newsletter we have attached our Uniform Policy.  This policy outlines the expectations that we have for our students in regards to the wearing of their school uniform.  We are currently having a focus on 'doing the small things with pride'.  This means boys keeping their shirts tucked in, girls wearing the appropriate headbands, jewellery and nail polish, students with shoulder length hair keeping it tied back and the wearing of black, polishable school shoes.
