Mrs seagar's Reflection

principal

Gratitude is the memory of the heart.
Mary MacKillop 1907
Welcome to Week 6.

Pope Francis, in his 2022 World Mission Sunday message, invites everyone to answer the call to be missionary, sharing that "Mission is carried out together, not individually...".
Tasmanian Catholic Churches are currently supporting a range of mission development programs in Ethiopia addressing malnutrition, the lack of access to education for young children, and the vulnerable position of women in society.

These initiatives both local and international stem from Catholic Social Teachings.

At Our Lady of Lourdes our Junior Joeys have been very active this year in leading our school community to support those in our community in need:
Socktober - $287.30
Vinnies SleepOut  - $292.45
Sisters of the Lovers of the Holy Cross - $752.35

Last week the Junior Joeys decorated donated cupcakes baked by staff, to sell in order to fundraise for The Sisters of the Lovers of the Holy Cross in Vietnam, as they have been providing us with flowers and decorations for our church.  These nuns are based in New Norfolk and have been involved in the Archdiocesan community for six years, providing formation for the Vietnamese Catholic community, administering Holy Communion to the elderly and sick, assisting where they can at St Brigid’s Catholic Primary School, and with CatholicCare’s Early Learning and Care service at New Town. They have also previously worked with local Syrian and Iraqi refugee families.

In October the school participated in Socktober to fundraise for children in Ethiopia: particularly providing food security and life-saving nutrition for them. This year Our Lady of Lourdes was one of 471 schools across Australia involved in these desperately needed funds.

We have previously mentioned the Junior Joey’s sleep over that raised funds for Devonport’s Gran’s Van, buying essential warm clothes for those in need in our community.

In the coming weeks the Junior Joeys are creating Christmas cards for our neighbours; staff are contributing to a giving tree to support Gran’s Van instead of buying each other gifts and we have another giving tree for students and families to contribute to the Vinnies Christmas Appeal and Christmas themed items to donate.

As stated at the beginning of this reflection, It is humbling as a leader to see our community, coming together to willingly supporting those around us who have greater needs.  Many thanks to all of those involved and to all contributions.

God bless,
Carol

COVID-19 Update

COVID Changes
As you would be aware over the past few months the government has been shifting its COVID-19 management approach from one focused on population health to one of personal responsibility. Recently it was announced that mandatory isolation for persons who test positive for COVID-19 would end on 14th October. Changes have also been made to other requirements such as those for close contacts.

Further to the above and in accordance with advice provided to the education sector by Public Health, please be advised that our COVID-19 settings for term 4 are:
  1. Staff or students who test positive for COVID-19 are no longer required to undergo mandatory isolation.
  2. It is a Catholic Education Tasmania (CET) requirement that staff or students who test positive and who display acute COVID related symptoms are not to enter a school until their symptoms have gone or have significantly resolved e.g. they have not had a fever (or signs of fever such as chills or night sweats) for at least 24 hours.
  3. Requirements for close contacts such as mask wearing when outside the home no longer apply.
  4. Staff or students with cold or flu symptoms should stay home and test using a rapid antigen test for two consecutive days. If the person tests negative on successive days for COVID-19 and their symptoms are mild e.g. a runny nose but no coughing or sneezing, then it is OK for the person to be at school.
  5. Staff and students who test positive for COVID-19 but who are asymptomatic can enter a school.
  6. Staff who are asymptomatic and who look after high-risk students should either stay away from school for 5 working days or wear a mask for 5 working days.
  7. Registration of positive tests, whilst no longer required, is recommended particularly for those persons who may wish to access health services such as COVID anti-viral treatments and COVID @ home.
  8. The provision of rapid antigen tests to staff and students on request is to continue.
  9. It is a Public Health requirement that staff and students who test positive shall not enter any listed high-risk settings (hospitals, residential aged care etc) until 7 days after they test positive.
  10. With the onset of warmer weather opportunities to maximise natural ventilation of indoor areas should be pursued.
  11. Continue to promote the ‘stay away if unwell’ message, personal hygiene and to wipe down frequently touched surfaces with soapy water or disinfectant once per day.

Thank you for your support and co-operation.

RE NEWs

The Junior Joey Cupcake Sale
On Monday, November 14th, the Junior Joeys baked cupcakes to raise funds for the Sisters of the Lovers of the Holy Cross in Vietnam. We had many kind cupcake donations from staff and students. It took us multiple hours to decorate the cupcakes with a beautiful Christmas theme. With the help of the staff we managed to decorate over 600 cupcakes to sell to all of you.
Overall we managed to raise $752.35!!
Thank you again to everyone for all of the fantastic support you showed during our sale. We really do hope that you all enjoyed our Christmas cupcakes.

Vinnies Christmas Appeal
The St Vincent de Paul Christmas Appeal are in desperate need of items of food in particular special Christmas food items such as bon bons that would make a family’s Christmas Day special and different from an everyday meal. St Vincents would also like any donations of non-perishable food items to restock their pantry for the Christmas and holiday season. In order to support those in need we are collecting food for those who are not as fortunate as we are this Christmas season. Collection boxes are located in the school foyer.

Hay Fever Season
We have had many students suffering from the symptoms of hay fever over the last few weeks. If your child currently takes medication for hay fever, it is a good idea to treat them prior to coming to school in the morning.

Policy in Focus

In our Policy in Focus section we are sharing the Tasmanian Catholic Education Commission policy - Outdoor Play and Learning Policy.  This policy was approved by the Tasmanian Catholic Education Commission on 24 July 2018, and came into effect 27 July 2018.
The purpose of this policy is to support the provision and use of play spaces within our schools and to encourage positive learning experiences outside of the classroom.  The intent of the Policy is to ensure all parties are aware of their obligations in providing inspiring play spaces and rich outdoor learning experiences to enable students to grow and develop to their full potential in accordance with our Gospel values while ensuring the safest possible environment for those experiences.  A key aim of the Policy is to reinvigorate play spaces as areas for learning and adventure with reasonable and appropriately identified, managed risk-taking whilst ensuring Work Health and Safety (WHS) requirements are met.

We encourage you to read through and explore the policy.
