Mrs gratton's Reflection

student support coordinator

“Emotions are a critical source of information for learning."
Joseph ledoux

Welcome everyone to week 9.

There has been much talk and research around emotional intelligence and emotional literacy that suggests they lead to better health, higher academic achievement and stronger relationships.

The terms emotional intelligence and emotional literacy both refer to the ability to recognise, understand, handle and appropriately express emotions.

‘Emotional intelligence’ is a person's overall ability to deal with their emotions, while ‘emotional literacy’ suggests a person's ability to communicate their emotions through words and read them in others.

There are five main aspects of emotional intelligence which, when developed, lead to children becoming emotionally literate. Daniel Goleman (1995), identifies these in his book, 'Emotional Intelligence’:
  1. Knowing emotions. The child recognises a feeling as it happens.
  2. Managing emotions. The child has ways of reassuring themselves when they feel anxious or upset.
  3. Self-Motivation. The child is in charge of their emotions, rather than controlled by them.
  4. Empathy. The child is aware of what another person is feeling.
  5. Handling relationships. The child is able to build relationships with others.

So, can we teach our children to be emotionally intelligent and literate? We sure can! Just like other learning areas, some children are instinctively in tune with their feelings and emotions and manage new situations/people with ease, while others will require differing levels of support. All children, however, require their emotional literacy to be nurtured, supported and encouraged. When we talk to and teach children to express themselves appropriately, we are empowering them to navigate the sometimes emotionally choppy waters of life.

How can we help our children in developing emotional literacy?
  • Accept your child’s emotions and their emotional responses.
  • Label their emotions with them.
  • Encourage your child to talk about their feelings.
  • Help them to recognise the signs about how others may be feeling.
  • Teach them how to calm down and press their imaginary ‘pause button’.
  • Teach children alternative ways of expressing their frustrations.
  • Recognise what motivates them to perform at their best.
  • Model how to remain calm and in control when you are tired, angry or frustrated.

Here at school, children are supported to develop their emotional intelligence in a multitude of ways. This may be during incidental moments, through whole-class explicit Social/Emotional teaching, small group or one to one sessions with a teacher or counsellor.

When we model, teach or empower our children towards becoming emotionally literate, we are supporting them in becoming confident, resilient, tolerant adults who experience positive mental health, well-being and quality of life. Is there any better gift we can give?

Kind regards,

Eve

The Australian Catholic Church observes Child Protection Sunday on the second Sunday in September each year. Child Protection Sunday coincides with National Child Protection Week and falls on Sunday 12 September 2021.
Child Protection Sunday seeks to acknowledge the immense damage caused by the sexual abuse of children by priests, religious and lay people within Catholic contexts. It makes a commitment to the practices and protocols that create and maintain safe environments for all people, especially children and other people who are at risk. It invites people to pray for those harmed by abuse, directly and indirectly.
The Sisters of St Joseph are actively committed to fostering communities and a culture of safeguarding that recognises and upholds the dignity and rights of all children. SOSJ have developed a Child Safeguarding Commitment Statement to reflect and honour this commitment to child safety and respect. We invite you to read more about our Child Commitment Statement by visiting our website or clicking here.

Recent Eisteddfod Success
OLOL had 48 students competing in the recent Devonport Eisteddfod,  Duologue section and all Grade 3 and 4 students entered an original poem.   We had many medal winners across these sections.  I wish to thank all of these students for their time and commitment to the Arts and Mrs Ellis for inspiring our students to reach new heights in cultural attainment.

Also congratulations to the many students who performed in music, dance and speaking classes as part of their out-of-school hours activities.  Thank you to parents for supporting these rich experiences for their children.
Our winning eisteddfod Duologue students performed brilliantly at the showcase of talent evening last week as well.
Maddi Daw and Scarlett Clements (Bummer)
Oscar Lakeland and Ella Foster (Masking up)
“They all owned the stage, looked confident, relaxed and very polished. They had the audience laughing and applauding loudly at the end”, reported a very proud Mrs Ellis.

Oscar Lakeland was awarded  the Devonport Repertory Theatre’s Society prize for the Best Actor!  Oscar was delighted  with his $50 and certificate.
Zeb Peters also performed a Jazz dance routine brilliantly!!

Congratulations to all of our students who participated in these cultural events.

SunSmart Policy - Hats required from 1st September - 30th April
Late last year we reviewed our SunSmart Policy. The purpose of this Policy is to establish guidelines for the school, employees, parents and volunteers to comply with the School Sun Protection Policy based on recommendations made by Cancer Council Tasmania.
Please see the extract below:
Over-exposure to UV (ultraviolet) rays causes sunburn, skin damage and increased risk of skin cancer. Inappropriate sun exposure in the first 18 years of life contributes significantly to the lifetime risk of developing skin cancer.  Schools can play a significant role toward reducing the lifetime risk of skin cancer.
The sun protection policy has been developed to ensure that all students, teachers and the school community are protected from skin damage caused by harmful UV radiation from the sun.  In Tasmania, the UV is 3 and above from September to April and safe sun exposure for Vitamin D (May to August). Therefore, schools need to implement sun protection measures from the beginning of the school year until the end of April and again from the beginning of September until the end of the school year. Implementing sun protection measures throughout Terms 1 and 4 only is insufficient to protect against UV rays.

Therefore from the 1st September - 30th April staff and students will be required to wear Sun Hats. Sunscreen is also provided for staff and students to use.

Spring Netball
There will be netball training for any interested Grade 2-6 students in the school gym each Monday 11:00 - 11:30am with Ebony Charlesworth. Students need to bring their sneakers.

Merseylink have designed a Bus Safety Brochure, which includes tips on bus safety, safety rules, riding the bus, exiting the bus and tips for parents to encourage and assist students becoming aware of the importance of safety while using their services.  It is essential that children and parents understand the importance of safety both as a passenger on the bus and as a pedestrian around the bus.

Policy in Focus

We are committed to the National Principles for Child Safe Organisations and the corresponding Child Safe Standards identified by the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse Report.  As such we have a clear Child Safety Policy and utilise a number of documents to support this policy further.  Over the next few weeks we will explore our Child Safety Policy, supporting instruments and guiding documents.
