Mrs gratton's Reflection

Student support coordinator

Inclusion is a belief system. It begins with the belief that every child has strengths to build upon, interests to share, and experiences to honour.
Welcome everyone to Week 8.

At Our Lady of Lourdes, we value diversity and celebrate difference. Through inclusive learning and teaching, we endeavour to engage every learner to ensure their successful access to and participation in learning. In short, equal access for all.

We recognise that every student has differing needs, abilities and interests and that deep learning happens when teaching responds to these individual qualities. As there is no single method of teaching that supports the learning of all students, educators make a combination of adjustments/accommodations to enable every student to reach their full potential.

Below are some examples of the ways educators adapt to allow access to learning for all:
  • Adjust: Adapt the skill level, problem type, or the rules on how the learner may approach the work.
  • Alternate: Adapt the goals or outcome while using the same activities/materials/assessment task.
  • Curriculum: Provide different instruction and materials to meet students' individual goals.
  • Time: Adapt the time allotted and allowed for learning, task completion or testing.
  • Size: Adapt the number of items that the learner is expected to learn or complete.
  • Participation: Adapt the extent to which a learner is actively involved in the task.
  • Setting: Adjust the environment in which the student is learning.
  • Input/Presentation: Adapt how the instruction is delivered to the student.
  • Output: Adapt how the student can respond to instruction.
  • Support: Increase the amount of personal assistance.
(Sue Larkey)

As you move around our school, you will see a combination of the above happening naturally. It’s exciting to see the safe yet challenging classrooms where students are able to develop a deep sense of belonging and achieve success.

We thank you for your ongoing partnership in your child’s/children’s learning journey.

Kind regards,
Eve

COVID-19 Update

This week we have had 16 positive COVID-19 test results in the school.

You must notify the school if your child tests positive to COVID-19. Please to this as soon as possible. Messages can be left on the school's answering machine after hours - you don't need to wait for the office to open.
Please include the date of your child's positive test result in the message. This allows us to communicate to families and staff in a timely manner and arrange for the classrooms to have an extra COVID clean.

OLOL is following all the requirements for managing these cases as advised by the Department of Health and Catholic Education Tasmania.

WSH – Covid Changes
  • If, within eight weeks following release from isolation, the person comes into contact with someone with COVID-19 and they are not immunocompromised or symptomatic, they will not need to isolate.  This means that there is now an 8 week immunity for isolation and quarantine.
  • Public Health expects staff and students to undertake rapid antigen testing as per Public Health’s outbreak management guidelines, however Public Health has advised this is not a prerequisite to be able to attend school.

Thank you for your support and co-operation.

RE NEWS

St Joseph's Feast Day
Saturday 19th March was the Feast of St Joseph.
St Joseph lived a simple and yet very important life, he provided for his family and loved them. St Joseph worked as a carpenter and was a good father to Jesus. In the Bible there are no stories about Joseph doing great things. Joseph was a humble man who did what he could to look after and love his family in a humble and quiet way. St Joseph is the patron saint of workers.
Our school was founded by the Sisters of St Joseph who worked quietly, humbly and practically to help others just as St Joseph did.
This week we pray for all of the Sisters of St Joseph, that they may know God’s constant love and continue to follow in the footsteps of St Joseph through caring and supporting families and the less fortunate.
Prayer of St. Joseph
St Joseph,
watch over me
and care for me
just as you cared for
the child Jesus;
and by your help,
may I come to know
your Son,
and so grow
in strength
and wisdom
and the favour of God.
Amen

Junior Joey's
The Junior Joey Leaders of our school have attended a Formation Day at Mackillop Hill Forth with Sr Carmel Jones. A big thankyou to Sr Carmel who travelled down from Launceston to facilitate the day. The Junior Joey’s will be active leaders in our school organising special fundraising days and events and focussing on ways to make our school and local community a better place and to raise awareness for those in need. There will be more information as the year progresses.

The Celebration of Reconciliation

The Sacrament of Reconciliation will be celebrated on the 6th April at Our Lady of Lourdes Church at 7.00 p.m. Please keep the children in your prayers as they prepare.

Sacramental Program Family Mass
As part of our Sacramental Program this year, we are having a special Family Mass for all Sacramental Candidates on Sunday 3rd April at 4pm at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, followed by a sausage sizzle in the Parish Hall (beside Church).
This is a great opportunity to get to know each other as we journey together through the sacraments.
We will be asking for volunteers to read in Mass, if you or your child are interested please let Fr Steven know.
We are looking forward to gathering together for Fun, Family, Friendship, Food and Faith!

Lent
Don't forget we are still in the middle of the Church season of Lent. Lent is a time of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. We will be raising money for Project compassion in the coming weeks, stay tuned for more details.

Picture
Third Week of Lent
(Week beginning Monday 21st
March)
We are now in the third week of Lent with the Project Compassion story of Janice, a Wagilak woman and traditional dancer who tells her family’s stories through movements handed down over generations.
Like many remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, Janice’s faces a range of challenges – low employment and education, financial hardship, poorer health and lower life expectancy.
With your help, Caritas Australia supports Djilpin Arts Aboriginal Corporation, which operates a centre for traditional and contemporary Aboriginal arts and culture, providing employment and generating income for local communities.
Janice believes that Djilpin Arts’ work is essential to create opportunities for young people to stay on-country, to share intergenerational knowledge between elders and the younger generation - to promote healing, and to keep culture alive.
Watch a short film about Janice’s story here.
Please support Project Compassion: lent.caritas.org.au

HIGH LEVELS OF LEARNING FOR ALL
ENABLING, ENGAGING & ENRICHING LEARNING

At Our Lady of Lourdes we have multiple layers the learning - in all contexts and areas - of our students is our priority.  This learning might be social, behavioural, academic, emotional etc, but we strive to meet the needs of our students by supporting their growth from whatever point they are at.

As many of you would be aware, this year we have moved away from our Grade Teacher Model and have developed a multi-faceted model of support and intervention.  Over the coming weeks we will take a more in depth look into each of the roles, and humans that fill them, within our new model.

Numeracy Key Teacher

Picture
As identified in previous newsletters, Catholic Education Tasmania has a key focus on Literacy this year, as it is the beginning of the 5 year strategic plan.  At Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School we support this initiative, however we have also identified an opportunity to improve our teaching and learning practices in Numeracy.

Mrs Alison Broomhall is our Numeracy Key Teacher.  Mrs Broomhall has strong passion and a high level of skill and understanding in the field of Numeracy, particularly in regards to teaching and learning with the Australian Curriculum: Mathematics.  Mrs Broomhall works with teachers to enrich and further develop their pedagogy to ensure they have the most effective impact on student learning as possible.  This work is undertaken through, but not limited to:
  • Modelling
  • Mentoring
  • Observing & Providing Feedback
  • Curating resources and synthesising research

Mrs Broomhall has already worked with a number of classes to model lessons involving open ended, complex tasks that cater for the diversity of all learners.  A distinct trademark of Mrs Broomhall's maths lessons is the 'struggle' that all children experience as they attempt to solve problems using a range of strategies.  It is through this 'struggle' or challenge that our students find new strategies and solutions to the problems they are set and hence, develop as mathematicians.

Mrs Broomhall's passionate and focused leadership is essential to our school achieving high levels of learning for all, particularly in regards to the area of Numeracy.
