To be at home, is to be known.
Brene Brown
Welcome all to Week 8.

As we edge towards the final weeks of the term, I’ve been reflecting upon connection. Recently I’ve had the privilege of Morning duty. This has been a highlight of the term for me. I thrive on the opportunity to greet families as they enter school each morning. This truly ‘charges my battery’. I very much appreciate being a part of the connected school community that OLOL is.

There are so many ways we as humans experience connection to self, others and the world; through culture, place, memory, imagination, the environment, personal values and family history, just to name some.

The importance of these connections cannot be underestimated. A connected school community encourages shared responsibility among all, and students who have access to strong relationships are more academically engaged, have stronger social/emotional skills, and experience more positive behaviour.

A collaborative setting where community members possess diversified knowledge and skills naturally creates an inclusive learning community. The respect we have for one another allows us to recognise our unique contributions, resulting in an environment where we can all be teachers and learners.

As the old African proverb says, "It takes a village to raise a child." Or a community to raise a school. Thank you to our OLOL community for working together to create a sense of belonging for all.

Have a wonderful week.

School news

Public Holiday - Thursday 22nd September 2022
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has announced there will be a one-off public holiday to mourn the  Queen’s death on Thursday 22 September 2022. The public holiday will be a single observance for 2022 to allow Australians to pay their respects.

As a result, the TCEO and all CET schools and colleges will be closed.

Class allocation for 2023
Class allocation for 2023, involves a variety of factors including balancing academic, social and emotional needs of all of our students.  Our staff are in the best position to objectively do this.  They spend 800 hours with your child over the school year.

From the OLOL Class Formation Policy it states that we:
• Provide each child with the opportunity to be part of a class of children where they will have the best opportunity to learn.
• Provide evenly balanced classes in which the social, emotional, academic, spiritual and physical needs of each child are taken into account.
• Ensure that optimum use is made of prior knowledge that teachers, parents and other key stakeholders have of each child before class placement.
I have monitored the effectiveness over the last 5 years of student and parent input into the selection of friends for their child in classes.  Most students may choose 1 or 2 students who enable them to continue learning to their best, however many choose ‘friends’ who do not enable this.  Parent input likewise can be skewed by friendships that again do not assist the student in learning.  I acknowledge that each student needs to feel secure and safe to facilitate strong learning and I have observed that teacher judgement of student class grouping is more often than provides the best model.
We do appreciate working with you the first educators of your child and you are welcome to meet and share any valid concerns with the Principal as part of this process.  These concerns are not friendship requests, but born of a genuine need that would affect the future learning of your child.
We do state that this process does take us considerable time and discernment, therefore any parent requests received after 28th October will not be considered.
As in previous years if any parents have valid concerns for class allocation in 2023, please contact the school office for an interview with Carol between Monday 26th September and Friday 28th  October: [email protected]

If parents know that they will not be continuing enrolment of their child/children at OLOL in 2023 please let the School Office know as soon as possible. The realities around budgets in schools rely heavily on maintaining the right numbers of students. It helps our school out immensely with maintaining staffing, allocating resources and balancing classes whether any students will be moving schools.

Emergency Practice
This term we will hold an unannounced emergency practice with staff & students, to test our response to a potential scenario that staff identify a threat warranting the school go into lockdown (opposite to evacuation). This will occur during lunch time.

Like for fire evacuation drills, we recognised the worth to test this process.
We have plans in place to make this practice as least disruptive as possible.

Policy in Focus

This week in our Policy in Focus section we are sharing a new Catholic Education Commission Tasmania policy - Adult Behaviour Policy.  This policy was approved by the Catholic Education Commission Tasmania on 12 April 2022, and came into effect 1 July 2022.
The purpose of this policy are two fold:
1. To set out clear standards of the behaviour of adults when in a CET workplace.
2. To support CET workers to establish and maintain strong and healthy relationships with other members of the CET community.

We encourage you to read through and explore the policy.
