Mrs gratton's Reflection

student support co-ordinator

”The wider the range of possibilities we offer children, the more intense will be their motivations and the richer their experiences".
Loris Malaguzzi
Welcome everyone, to Term 4.

It’s wonderful to see our children return to school revitalised and ready for an action-packed, wonder-filled Term 4.

Term 4 just so happens to be my favourite term of the year. The excitement of the Swimming program for our Grade 2 - 4 students, the Surf program for our Grade 5s and 6s, as well as the swimming and athletics carnivals, excursions, Grade 6 camp as well as our Grade 6 students embarking on their final term as students of OLOL.

Another exciting adventure this term is the reinstatement of Loose parts play within the playground.

In the 1970s, architect Simon Nicholson articulated ‘the theory of loose parts’: the idea that ‘in any environment, both the degree of inventiveness and creativity and the possibility of discovery, are directly proportional to the number and kind of variables in it’. His theory has inspired educators across the world, and loose parts are increasingly being incorporated into school and childcare settings.

Loose parts play involves materials that can be moved, manipulated, constructed, rearranged, taken apart, put together, carried, combined, lined up, used alone and given a destiny that is determined by a child. Each object can have a thousand and one destinies as defined by the child’s imagination, rather than a manufacturer or an adult.
Interaction with Loose parts can:
  • Spark curiosity, creativity, exploration and imagination; increase physical activity and skills (in ways that can be more inclusive than sports-dominated active play); provide opportunities for children to experiment with negotiation, collaboration, relationship building and leadership; and allows children to take risks, cultivate independence and confidence, and develop their planning and problem-solving skills. In essence, Loose parts play supports children in building a sense of capability in their world.

When integrating Loose parts play into our playground, we will initially incorporate weatherproof, hardy resources such as; tyres, pipes and plumbing connections of differing sizes and lengths, hose, cable reels/drums, rope, tarps, sticks, timber, crates and witches hats. If you have access to materials/resources you feel would add value to our Loose parts play program and would like to contribute, we would love to hear from you. Please make contact via email ([email protected]). We thank those who have already provided resources. We are truly appreciative.

We look forward to witnessing and sharing innovation in play and genius in action in our playground this term.

Have a wonderful first week back.

Kindest regards,
Eve

School uniform survey

The Our Lady of Lourdes School Board is seeking parent opinion/feedback on the possibility for Grade 1 and 2 students to wear sports uniform on a full-time basis.  The Board have researched the pros and cons of such a move and now seek feedback from the wider community.  The guiding principle for the School Board is the evidence that a sports uniform allows for and encourages much more physical activity, as well as being more comfortable for learning in the classroom.

The Board have attached some easy reading articles for your benefit as well as a pros/cons list below the survey.

If the community support this initiative, there would be a transition of Prep to Grade 1 for next year, 2023 and then into Gr 2 for 2024.   There may be the opportunity for the Grade 2s to move into a mixture of sports uniform and formal uniform next year, on nominated days.  The Board are aware that some parents may have purchased newer items of the formal uniform already.

Other Catholic Schools in Tasmania have made this transition over the last few years with some moving to Gr 4 as well.

The community will be consulted again if there is a desire, over time, to extend the full PE uniform to all grades.

This survey is anonymous.

Pros of pe uniform for kinder - 2

  • Comfort
  • Increased physical activity
  • Less costly
  • Researched evidence to suggest sound educationally to wear more comfortable clothes for learning

cons of pe uniform for kinder - 2

  • May not be seen as presentable as the traditional uniform
  • It will take several years to transition

COVID-19 Update

Please be advised that as of 9 September 2022 a person who has tested positive for COVID-19 can now leave isolation 5 days after their first testing positive provided:
  1. All acute COVID-related symptoms have gone or have significantly resolved (e.g., cough, runny nose, sore throat, or shortness of breath).
  2. They have not had a fever (or signs of fever such as chills or night sweats) for at least 24 hours.

  4. They do not attend any listed high-risk settings (hospitals, residential aged care etc) until 7 days after they test positive.

If a person continues to have fever or acute respiratory symptoms on or after day 5 they must remain in isolation until they meet the criteria in points 1 and 2 above.

Public Health will continue to send registered positive cases an email during their isolation period.

*Pending another outbreak of COVID we will no longer be reporting Covid cases.

Thank you for your support and co-operation.

Throughout the month of October we pray the prayers of the rosary.
The word “Rosary” means a chain of roses and the roses are prayers. The Rosary Prayer tells us about the life of Jesus and his Mother, Mary.
The prayer used beads to count prayers as they are said repetitively. The prayer itself is a meditation. The main prayer that is said is the Hail Mary, which is repeated as we focus on the main events of Jesus' life. If you have a pair of rosary beads at home please pray the special prayer with your children. The Rosary is prayed at Our Lady of Lourdes Church Friday mornings at 10.00 onwards and everyone is welcome. If you need a copy of the structure and prayers of the Rosary please contact Catherine Dunn.

Curriculum - Scripture
The children will be focussing on scripture in Religious Education this term. The progression of the learning is:

  • Kinder - The Word of God is shared when we read the stories of God’s love in the Bible.
  • Prep -  Stories from the Scriptures teach us about the love of God
  • Gd 1 and 2 - Scripture is proclaimed in prayer and worship as the Word of God.
  • Gd 3 and 4 - Scripture teaches Christians how to live as followers of Jesus.
  • Gd 5 and 6 - Christians reflect on the action of God in their lives in the light of Scripture, the Word of God.
There are some beautiful stories in the bible that unfold messages about life. If you would like to read some at home as a family, the stories of the parables that Jesus told are a good place to start. The most famous of these parables and the most widely read around the world is the parable of the Good Samaritan.

Class allocation for 2023
Class allocation for 2023, involves a variety of factors including balancing academic, social and emotional needs of all of our students.  Our staff are in the best position to objectively do this.  They spend 800 hours with your child over the school year.

From the OLOL Class Formation Policy it states that we:
  • Provide each child with the opportunity to be part of a class of children where they will have the best opportunity to learn.
  • Provide evenly balanced classes in which the social, emotional, academic, spiritual and physical needs of each child are taken into account.
  • Ensure that optimum use is made of prior knowledge that teachers, parents and other key stakeholders have of each child before class placement.

I have monitored the effectiveness over the last 5 years of student and parent input into the selection of friends for their child in classes.  Most students may choose 1 or 2 students who enable them to continue learning to their best, however many choose ‘friends’ who do not enable this.  Parent input likewise can be skewed by friendships that again do not assist the student in learning.  I acknowledge that each student needs to feel secure and safe to facilitate strong learning and I have observed that teacher judgement of student class grouping is more often than provides the best model.
We do appreciate working with you the first educators of your child and you are welcome to meet and share any valid concerns with the Principal as part of this process.  These concerns are not friendship requests, but born of a genuine need that would affect the future learning of your child.

We do state that this process does take us considerable time and discernment, therefore any parent requests received after 28th October will not be considered.

As in previous years if any parents have valid concerns for class allocation in 2023, please contact the school office for an interview with Carol between Monday 26th September and Friday 28th  October: [email protected]

If parents know that they will not be continuing enrolment of their child/children at OLOL in 2023 please let the School Office know as soon as possible. The realities around budgets in schools rely heavily on maintaining the right numbers of students. It helps our school out immensely with maintaining staffing, allocating resources and balancing classes whether any students will be moving schools.

Policy in Focus

In our Policy in Focus section we are sharing the Tasmanian Catholic Education Commission policy - Outdoor Play and Learning Policy.  This policy was approved by the Tasmanian Catholic Education Commission on 24 July 2018, and came into effect 27 July 2018.
The purpose of this policy is to support the provision and use of play spaces within our schools and to encourage positive learning experiences outside of the classroom.  The intent of the Policy is to ensure all parties are aware of their obligations in providing inspiring play spaces and rich outdoor learning experiences to enable students to grow and develop to their full potential in accordance with our Gospel values while ensuring the safest possible environment for those experiences.  A key aim of the Policy is to reinvigorate play spaces as areas for learning and adventure with reasonable and appropriately identified, managed risk-taking whilst ensuring Work Health and Safety (WHS) requirements are met.

We encourage you to read through and explore the policy.
