Are you using compass?

As you are aware Catholic Education Tasmania has moved to a new student record system called Compass. The Compass Program allows us to communicate with families directly through the Compass Parent Portal. The Compass Parent Portal is now our main communication tool. All parents will need to download the Compass App and ensure they are able to login.
Thank you to those families who have already taken up the Compass App and are successfully engaging with it and our school.

“Anything is possible. Anything can be.”
Shel Silverstein

Welcome everyone to Week 3.

https://healthyfamilies.beyondblue.org.au/ describes resilience in children as 'a child’s ability to cope with ups and downs, and bounce back from the challenges they experience.' Building resilience helps children to develop the basic skills and habits that will help them deal with challenges later in life, during adolescence and adulthood.  In short, resilience is vital for children’s mental health both now and into the future.

During the first week of Term 2 students in Grades 3 to 6 participated in a presentation by Robyn Sutcliffe. Robyn has been a Social Worker for over ten years and has been delivering workshops and presentations to young people and their parents/carers for the last seven years. Robyn’s presentation; 'The Future of Resilience', explored why resilience has diminished in our young people and most importantly how we get it back.

As Robyn explains; 'resilience just so happens to be a major indicator of life success. If what we want most for our children is life success then ‘getting this resilience back’ is high on our list of priorities'.

During the presentation Robyn unpacked for students, the science of the brain and body and how this science directly impacts their ability to connect with their peers and the world around them in a healthy and fulfilling way.

When discussing anxiety and worry students learned methods and tools to manage these big feelings. Your children may have already discussed some of these strategies with you. Some may have transferred these skills into their daily routines at home as they have here at school.

Robyn explored with students the impact of technology on the brain/body. Particular emphasis was placed upon social connection and its importance for our health and why our daily dose of dopamine/oxytocin/serotonin and endorphin should not come from online interaction, but rather face to face interaction.

Now that students possess new knowledge, understandings and skills around their own emotional regulation and behaviours, we invite you as their parents/carers to come along this Thursday evening at 6.30pm and join us in discussing our role and the lever points that we can maximise to enable us to build capable strong kids, who grow into capable, strong adults.

If you would like to know more Robyn’s website is as follows: www.truenorthcoach.com.au

Kind regards

Eve

The school will be locked for the duration of the fire drill. The practice will be as least disruptive to student learning as possible.

Rainbows Program
We will be offering the Rainbows Program in Term 2. This Program aims to foster emotional resilience in children following experiences of bereavement, loss and family separation.
Children will participate in a weekly session, approximately 30 minutes, in a peer support group of other children with a Rainbows Facilitator, Mrs Jodi Clements. Mrs Clements is a trained and accredited Rainbows Facilitator and staff member of our school. The program has a total of 12 sessions.
If you wish for your child to participate in this program or would like further information please contact your child's class teachers or the school office.

Tasmanian Premier's Reading Challenge - (Monday April 26 - Friday July 2)

Kinder 2022
A reminder to existing families if they have children commencing in Kinder 2022, please fill out an enrolment form as soon as possible as places are filling quickly.

Fencing Works at OLOL
Over the last two weeks a black mesh fence has been installed around the school. The only access to the school from the Steele Street Carpark is now via the main avenue. The fence will provide added safety for our students. Once the project is completed (we are presently waiting on a gate), we are going to trial locking the school in the evenings and on weekends for one month. This is to try to reduce the vandalism and foreign objects being left in the playground outside of school hours. If this is unsuccessful in reducing misuse and damage to the school we will return to leaving the gates open.

COVID 19 Update
Contract Tracing & TAS app
Visitors such as parents and carers can enter the school for up to 15 minutes before having to provide contact tracing details. If parents are volunteering at school, meeting with staff or attending events they must Check in using the TAS App.

Please see the information below about how to download the TAS App.

Tasmanians and visitors are required to use the Check in TAS App when they visit a range of business, organisations and events. This will help to keep ourselves, our loved ones and our community safe.
If you do not have a smartphone or are unable to use one, others in your group can check in for you on their device or staff at the premises will be able to record your contact information on their device or with pen and paper.
The free Check In TAS App is available for download from the Google Play Store and Apple App Store.
Please go to https://coronavirus.tas.gov.au/check-in-tas/information-for-the-community for more information.
School Events
Unfortunately, due to the size of the church and school gym we are not able to have parents at Whole School Prayer or Assemblies. This is due to COVID social distancing requirements of adults in these spaces. Whole School Prayer and Assemblies will continue to be live streamed for families to watch.
Social Distancing
Reminder that all adults must observe the 1.5m separation whilst on the school site.

Medical Students
If your Child suffers from Asthma, the Office requires Asthma Medical Plans that are signed and provided by a Doctor for 2021. Please provide to the Office if required.  All other Medical plans need to be for the current year.  Could current medical plans be bought into the office as soon as possible please.
