Mrs Gratton's Reflection

Student Support Coordinator

You are the sky. Everything else is just the weather
Pema Chadron
Welcome everyone to Week 5.

At the beginning of the term, I set myself the goal of becoming more mindful. This commitment has, at times, required me to dig deep and recommit. Life is busy. My decision to deliberately become more mindful came about for numerous reasons; however, one of my driving forces was creating an inner calm that would, with time, transfer across my outer world, particularly during family time.

When we focus on the present moment, this switches off our Sympathetic nervous system, the ‘stress response’ and switches on the Parasympathetic nervous system, which is our ‘rest and digest’ system. If we do not give ourselves times to rest, reflect, and participate in nourishing activities, then we are not giving ourselves some necessary time to rejuvenate.

Over time, Mindfulness has the potential to change the brain, in particular the amygdala (primal part of the brain) responsible for the body’s initial reaction to real or perceived stress, and the pre-fontal cortex, the part of the brain associated with concentration, decision-making and awareness. When Mindfulness is practised regularly, links between the amygdala and pre-frontal cortex become weakened, creating greater control over emotional responses or less ‘reactivity’.

Georgina Manning, the Director of Wellbeing For Kids, states that ‘Mindful experiences enhance emotional intelligence including self-regulation, impulse control, understanding and control over emotions, and generally become more aware of ourselves as a whole person.’ One of the easiest ways children can access the informal experience of Mindfulness is through unstructured play (off screens). Through play, children are completely in the moment. This gives them the vital rest and rejuvenation they need each day.

When parents are fully present in each moment while playing and interacting with their child/ren, the well-being of both is nurtured. This informal Mindfulness within the family can strengthen relationships, deepen connections, and increase everyone’s well-being, particularly when we deeply listen to our child/ren. Just ten minutes each day makes a difference.

Enjoy the week ahead (in a mindful way),

Eve

COVID-19 Update

COVID UPDATE - Term 3
  • The reinfection exclusion period has been reduced from 12 weeks to 28 days. People who have symptoms of COVID-19 within 28 days following their release from isolation do not need to test and isolate for 7 days.
  • Face masks are no longer required to be worn in schools, early childhood centres or on public transport unless the person is a close contact. Primary School students do not need to wear a face mask.
  • Students and staff may choose to wear a face mask whilst at school and will be supported in doing so.

Confirmed cases
Should a student or member of staff test positive for COVID-19 they must:
  • Isolate for a minimum of 7 days, provided outside the 28-day reinfection exclusion period.
  • Isolate for a further 3 days if they still have symptoms on day 7.
  • If test positive using a rapid antigen test, register the result with Public Health using their online declaration form or phone the Public Health Hotline 1800 671 738.
  • Notify household close contacts of the need to observe close contact requirements when
  • leaving their homes.
  • Notify the school of their positive test results.

Close contacts
Household close contacts of a confirmed case are no longer required to isolate at home. For a
close contact to leave home they must:
  • Not be symptomatic (must remain at home if they are)
  • Return a negative test each day before leaving home for the 7 days following their last contact with the confirmed case.

Colds and flu
Students/staff with cold or flu symptoms are required to stay home and test for two consecutive days.

If the person has twice tested negative on successive days for COVID-19 and their symptoms are mild e.g. a runny nose, there is no coughing or sneezing and, if a student they have indicated when asked that they feel well, then the person is permitted at school /workplace.

The wearing of a face mask by an adult with mild symptoms is encouraged.

Number of Positive Covid Cases in the school is currently 1.

Thank you for your support and co-operation.

St Vincent de Paul Winter Appeal
Our St Vincent de Paul Winter appeal has officially begun!
The St Vincent de Paul Society is a lay Catholic organisation that aspires to live the gospel message by serving Christ in the poor with love, respect, justice, hope and joy, and by working to shape a more just and compassionate society.

We ask families to make donations of the following items to support those in our local community in need. Boxes will be placed in each classroom, we ask students to put the donated goods in these when they can.

Our Junior Joey’s will be collecting the items from classrooms and helping to organise the appeal.

Thanks for your support!

First Eucharist Update
The candidates for First Eucharist have been busy preparing at the church with Fr Steven and the Sacramental Team in preparation for First Eucharist which will be celebrated over the weekend of the 17th and 18th of September. Everyone is invited to attend the weekend Mass and the First Communicants would appreciate your support in their faith journey. Please keep the children in your prayers.

Junior Joey Sleep Out Reflection
Braydee DiNunzio:
The Junior Joey sleep out was one of the best experiences. I never thought I would be able to experience being homeless and sleeping on cardboard. Although I was inside I still felt how hard it must be to sleep on the street.
My favourite part of the night was meeting Al from Gran’s Van. He really showed us how his work impacted people around Devonport. I think his job must be really rewarding and he helps many people who need it.
Wren Foster:
On the Junior Joey sleep out a coordinator that works at Grans Van Al came to our school to talk about how they help the homeless by giving them food, he also spoke about other peoples who are in similar situations.
Before dinner everyone said a prayer to Mary MacKillop and we set up our beds then we had soup for dinner. While we had our free time we made a charm bracelet with Mary MacKillop on them.
Later that night we got to make cupcakes to sell to the school for money to donate to Gran’s Van so they can buy blankets and beanies to give to the homeless.
Georgia Maloney
My favourite part of the sleepout was adventuring into the school in the dark and building cool forts to sleep in. I also loved learning about Gran’s Van and the big impact they make to our community.
I enjoyed the many fun activities we did during the sleepout. I loved making cupcakes and especially decorating them. All of this leads to raising money for Grans Van so the people in our community can have meals. We also made Mary MacKillop bracelets and played in the gym for around 2 hours.
I learnt a lot in the sleepout! Some things I did learn were around 80 meals are served to those in our community each week! Grans Van also give out blankets, beanies, socks and a few other things to the people that need them.
For dinner we had chicken noodle soup, pumpkin soup and bread buns with hot chocolate. For breakfast I had toast and 2 cups of hot chocolate! I love hot chocolate!
I had a lot of fun.

Policy in Focus

This week in our Policy in Focus section we are sharing a new Catholic Education Commission Tasmania policy - Adult Behaviour Policy.  This policy was approved by the Catholic Education Commission Tasmania on 12 April 2022, and came into effect 1 July 2022.
The purpose of this policy are two fold:
1. To set out clear standards of the behaviour of adults when in a CET workplace.
2. To support CET workers to establish and maintain strong and healthy relationships with other members of the CET community.

We encourage you to read through and explore the policy.
