Mr Farr's Reflection

Deputy Principal

Which one of these three people was a real neighbour to the man who was beaten up by robbers?
Luke 10:36
Welcome to Week 9 of Term 3.

At assembly last week we spoke of our school’s Charism.  Our Charism is the gift from God that was given to our school’s founders for them to live out the Gospel.  We carry that same Charism with us today and strive to live it in all we do, thus, living out Jesus’ message.

The key aspect of our Charism that we explored was compassion and we discussed it as being when you are moved to put other’s needs before your own.

It is not by coincidence that we have also been exploring the Parable of the Good Samaritan during School Prayer recently.  I’m sure many of you would have heard this parable before, or a version of it.  Jesus used this parable to explain to those listening, particularly teachers of the Jewish law who were attempting to trick and confuse him, about how they can live out God’s commandment of ‘Love God and love your neighbour’.  As the parable unfolds it is not whom we would expect to show compassion, the priest and levite (helper in the temple), that actually stop and help the man who was left beaten and on the side of the road.  In fact it is a Samaritan that shows compassion and helps.  In Jesus’ time Samaritan’s were hated by the Jewish people as they belonged to a different sect, or perhaps branch of the Jewish religion which had rather different views than that of the mainstream religion.  The hatred of Samaritan’s was an engrained world view that was passed on throughout generations.  So to have this man, a Samaritan, be the one who not only showed compassion, but went above and beyond what we might consider helping someone, to the extent that he paid for the beaten man to be cared for when he came to the next village, shows us clearly that it is through our compassion, our love, our willingness to serve others that we truly show love for God.

We see compassion being lived each day in our school.  Many of our children go out of their way to help their friends, or simply support another student that is hurt or upset, particularly in the playground.  This week our Junior Joeys used the money from their fundraising efforts earlier in the term to purchase items for Gran’s Van.  But at the same time, we often see our students struggle to put the needs of others before their own.  This is not a reflection of these children being naughty or bad, but simply being children.  There are plenty of us as adults that often struggle to put the needs of others before our own, whether that be within our own family or beyond, I’m sure you’ll agree that sometimes it is ‘easier’ to pretend we didn’t see / hear something and move on!  Other times it’s easier to watch the footy than help cook tea (sorry Jane)!

To show compassion doesn’t really require anything, nor is it about thinking less of ourselves, but it is about thinking of ourselves less.

Enjoy your short week!

School uniform survey

The Our Lady of Lourdes School Board is seeking parent opinion/feedback on the possibility for Grade 1 and 2 students to wear sports uniform on a full-time basis.  The Board have researched the pros and cons of such a move and now seek feedback from the wider community.  The guiding principle for the School Board is the evidence that a sports uniform allows for and encourages much more physical activity, as well as being more comfortable for learning in the classroom.

The Board have attached some easy reading articles for your benefit as well as a pros/cons list below the survey.

If the community support this initiative, there would be a transition of Prep to Grade 1 for next year, 2023 and then into Gr 2 for 2024.   There may be the opportunity for the Grade 2s to move into a mixture of sports uniform and formal uniform next year, on nominated days.  The Board are aware that some parents may have purchased newer items of the formal uniform already.

Other Catholic Schools in Tasmania have made this transition over the last few years with some moving to Gr 4 as well.

The community will be consulted again if there is a desire, over time, to extend the full PE uniform to all grades.

This survey is anonymous.

Pros of pe uniform for kinder - 2

  • Comfort
  • Increased physical activity
  • Less costly
  • Researched evidence to suggest sound educationally to wear more comfortable clothes for learning

cons of pe uniform for kinder - 2

  • May not be seen as presentable as the traditional uniform
  • It will take several years to transition

Over the weekend, 38 students from the Mersey Leven Parish and our school celebrated their First Holy Communion.

The reception of the Eucharist brings us into a closer association with God. Each time we receive the Eucharist we become continually formed in the likeness of Christ. Nourished with Christ we become Christ for others. We become Eucharistic people whose lives are centred on and flow from Christ, “We are the Body of Christ”.

The First Communicants have now completed their initiation into the full life of the Church and have commenced a life-long adventure of being Christ’s hands, feet, heart and mind.

Public Holiday - Thursday 22nd September 2022
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has announced there will be a one-off public holiday to mourn the  Queen’s death on Thursday 22 September 2022. The public holiday will be a single observance for 2022 to allow Australians to pay their respects.

As a result, the TCEO and all CET schools and colleges will be closed.

Class allocation for 2023
Class allocation for 2023, involves a variety of factors including balancing academic, social and emotional needs of all of our students.  Our staff are in the best position to objectively do this.  They spend 800 hours with your child over the school year.

From the OLOL Class Formation Policy it states that we:
  • Provide each child with the opportunity to be part of a class of children where they will have the best opportunity to learn.
  • Provide evenly balanced classes in which the social, emotional, academic, spiritual and physical needs of each child are taken into account.
  • Ensure that optimum use is made of prior knowledge that teachers, parents and other key stakeholders have of each child before class placement.

I have monitored the effectiveness over the last 5 years of student and parent input into the selection of friends for their child in classes.  Most students may choose 1 or 2 students who enable them to continue learning to their best, however many choose ‘friends’ who do not enable this.  Parent input likewise can be skewed by friendships that again do not assist the student in learning.  I acknowledge that each student needs to feel secure and safe to facilitate strong learning and I have observed that teacher judgement of student class grouping is more often than provides the best model.
We do appreciate working with you the first educators of your child and you are welcome to meet and share any valid concerns with the Principal as part of this process.  These concerns are not friendship requests, but born of a genuine need that would affect the future learning of your child.

We do state that this process does take us considerable time and discernment, therefore any parent requests received after 28th October will not be considered.

As in previous years if any parents have valid concerns for class allocation in 2023, please contact the school office for an interview with Carol between Monday 26th September and Friday 28th  October: [email protected]

If parents know that they will not be continuing enrolment of their child/children at OLOL in 2023 please let the School Office know as soon as possible. The realities around budgets in schools rely heavily on maintaining the right numbers of students. It helps our school out immensely with maintaining staffing, allocating resources and balancing classes whether any students will be moving schools.

Emergency Practice

Like for fire evacuation drills, we recognised the worth to test this process.
We have plans in place to make this practice as least disruptive as possible.

Policy in Focus

In our Policy in Focus section we are sharing a new Catholic Education Commission Tasmania policy - Adult Behaviour Policy.  This policy was approved by the Catholic Education Commission Tasmania on 12 April 2022, and came into effect 1 July 2022.
The purpose of this policy are two fold:
1. To set out clear standards of the behaviour of adults when in a CET workplace.
2. To support CET workers to establish and maintain strong and healthy relationships with other members of the CET community.

We encourage you to read through and explore the policy.
