Are you using compass?

As you are aware Catholic Education Tasmania has moved to a new student record system called Compass. The Compass Program allows us to communicate with families directly through the Compass Parent Portal. The Compass Parent Portal is now our main communication tool. All parents will need to download the Compass App and ensure they are able to login.
Thank you to those families who have already taken up the Compass App and are successfully engaging with it and our school.

“When we nurture a child’s whole being, we open doors to endless possibilities.”

Susan Wright

Welcome everyone, to Week 7.

As parents/carers, we are often asked the age-old question: “What do you want for your child?”
I know as an educator I’ve often asked this and so frequently heard the same answer. “Happy”. “I want my child to be happy”.
My parental experience thus far has brought with it the realisation that there exist numerous times during the week, day, hour, that your child will NOT be happy. And that’s ok. In fact, it’s normal. Every emotion felt is an opportunity for learning.

Now when I’m asked the question “What do you want for your child/children?”,  my answer is more than happiness. I want them to be healthy, feel safe, be engaged, be supported and be challenged to grow in every aspect of their learning.

The Whole Child approach works on the basis that every child is provided the opportunity to experience the above.
Through the Whole Child approach to learning, children are immersed in learning environments intended to foster a sense of community and encourage interpersonal skills, problem solving, goal setting, creativity, autonomy, and self-accountability.
The Whole Child approach fosters all areas of the child’s development and learning; academic, social–emotional and cognitive skills. It also lays the foundation for lifelong learning, ensuring that children are excited and engaged learners with positive approaches to learning.

Research tells us that socio-emotional, physical, creative, and cognitive capacities are deeply intertwined and equally important in ensuring a child's wellbeing, learning, and growth. When we place importance on all aspects of a child’s learning and development we are able to meet their needs, whatever they may be. “When we nurture a child’s whole being, we open doors to endless possibilities.” Susan Wright

Our school vision is for all students to experience high levels of learning, become resilient, flexible, problem solvers who can articulate/show their learning and thinking. This is by no means limited to the academic aspect of a child’s learning.

Our aim is for students to be engaged and joyful learners who, as a result, grow to become caring, creative, and resilient adults, not only because it is what their development calls for, but because the research shows us that active learners grow into well-adjusted adults. Whole child development “empowers children as creative and engaged citizens who can strengthen the wellbeing of a whole society.” (Edutopia, Whole Child Development is Undervalued).

We thank you for walking alongside us in this wonderful journey we call learning.

Warm regards,

Eve

National Ride2School Day

We will be celebrating National Ride2School Day here at OLOL on Wednesday 17th March 2021. Students are welcome to bring their bikes, scooters and skateboards to school and ride, scoot or skate around the school grounds at first and second lunch.  All students are welcome to ride during either lunch. Kinder students will ride, scoot or skate at their own time. Students who wish to participate, can wear their PE uniform and must wear a helmet.

Childhood Brain Development with Allison Davies: Parent Session
An invite to all OLOL Parents and Carers. If you wish to know more about the brain development of your child then join us on: March 25th in the OLOL Gym from 6:30pm – 8:30pm to hear nationally recognised Allison Davies present on neurodiversity.  A brain that can function at its best is a brain less likely to experience anxiety, overwhelm and overload, and a brain less likely to sit in survival mode. A brain that can function at its best means a child who is less likely to instigate harmful, risky or detrimental behaviours.

Psychology Cafe
Psychology Caffe are pleased to offer an opportunity for parents/carers to bring questions and learn about responding to their child’s difficult behaviours and how to best support their child’s development. Our No Drama Discipline program is a series of 8 Thursday evening sessions, starting Thursday 15th April from 6:45pm-8pm at 22 Kind Edward Street Ulverstone. We will also be taking expressions of interest for future groups. This parenting program provides parents/carers with skills to help their child manage their emotions and behaviour. Fencing Works at OLOL

The black mesh fencing 2.3m high will continue around the basketball courts and between the school and the church. All entry to OLOL via Steele Street will be up the main pathway.  These works are expected to take place in the First Term holidays.

Emergency Practice
In the coming weeks there will be a fire drill practice for staff and students.  This is an unannounced drill to test our response to a potential emergency situation.
