As you are aware Catholic Education Tasmania has moved to a new student record system called Compass. The Compass Program allows us to communicate with families directly through the Compass Parent Portal. The Compass Parent Portal is now our main communication tool. All parents will need to download the Compass App and ensure they are able to login.
Thank you to those families who have already taken up the Compass App and are successfully engaging with it and our school.

‘Showing gratitude is one of the simplest yet most powerful things humans can do for each other.’
Randy Pausch

Welcome everyone to Week 7

As this Term rushes past in the blink of an eye, staff took a moment during our weekly prayer to connect and remember the many things that we are grateful for.

Research shows that expressing gratitude has many benefits. Improvements in our relationships, our physical and mental health, increased empathy and self-esteem just to name a few.

The Journal of Happiness Studies (2019), found that gratitude is linked to happiness in children by age 5. This could mean that by instilling gratitude in our children at a young age could help them to grow up to be happier people. Gratitude in fact, is a far better predictor of hope and happiness than other constructs, like forgiveness, patience, and even self-control.

It has also been found that grateful parents tend to raise grateful children. This is probably the case because children learn to be grateful by hearing and seeing their parents and other significant adults in their lives, experience gratitude.

The Raising Grateful Children Project at UNC Chapel Hill has revealed that gratitude has four parts:
  1. Noticing – Recognising the things you have to be grateful for.
  2. Thinking – Thinking about why you’ve been given those things.
  3. Feeling – The emotions you experience as a result of the things you’ve been given.
  4. Doing – The way you express appreciation.

Each of these parts can be fostered by parents by simply asking some of the following questions:
  1. Notice – What do you have in your life to be grateful for? Are there things to be grateful for beyond the actual gifts someone has given you? Are you grateful for any people in your life?
  2. Think – What do you think about this present? Do you think you should give something to the person who gave it to you? Do you think you earned the gift? Do you think the person gave you a gift because they thought they had to or because they wanted to?
  3. Feel – Does it make you feel happy to get this gift? What does it feel like inside? What about this gift makes you feel happy?
  4. Do – Is there a way to show how you feel about this gift? Does the feeling you have about this gift make you want to share this feeling by giving to someone else?

It was also found that people who were grateful for things that happened to them in the past, felt happier in the present and more hopeful about their future (Journal of Positive Psychology, 2018). Perhaps providing our children with a childhood they feel grateful for now, will enable them to later be able to reflect on all that there is to be grateful for as an adult.

We are grateful each day to work with you in true partnership, shaping the future in the form of our children. We thank you for the incidental ‘good morning’ chats, we thank you for the tough conversations and for your commitment to work alongside us through the challenging moments and we thank you for being a valuable member of our community here at OLOL. We thank you.

Kindest regards,

Eve

Collection of Children
Can parents please make contact with the school office if there are people, relatives or friends that are not permitted to collect children or if they come on site is a concern for families.

Reports
Student reports will be issued in Week 10, 29th June. Parent-Teacher meetings will be held on Thursday 1st July.

Australian Early Development Census
This year our school, along with thousands of others across the country will begin preparations for the fifth Australian Early Development Census (AEDC).
The AEDC gives us a national picture of the development, health and wellbeing of children in their first year of full-time school (Prep). Since 2009, the census results have helped communities, schools and governments plan services and develop better policies to target support for children and families.  Children don’t miss any class time, and parents/carers don’t need to supply schools with any new information for the census. The AEDC gives us data at a school and community level - it isn’t an assessment of individual children.
Some teachers have also noticed that completing the assessments made them more aware of the needs of individual children and the class as a whole and that the census results are useful in planning for transitions to Year 1 and developing class programs.
Participation in the AEDC is voluntary. Parents/carers don’t need to take any action unless they choose not to include their children in the census.
To find out more about the census and how communities are using the data to help children and families visit the AEDC website: www.aedc.gov.au or speak to your Prep child's teacher or Mr Farr.

Canteen
Chicken Burger Special Day - Wednesday 16th June
The Chicken Burger Special Day that was scheduled for Wednesday the 26th May, 2021 will now be held on Wednesday 16th June, 2021.
There will be no other lunch orders available on this day.

Cross Country
This year our school Cross Country will be run during PE lessons.  Grades 3-6 was during Week 5 and Grades K-2 will be held in Week 9.  All spectators are welcome to attend, however must stand behind the fence as the course is spread throughout our school grounds.

Kinder 2022
Enrolments for Kinder 2022 are now closed. Parents are welcome to still enrol but will have to go on our wait list. Current parents of OLOL need to enrol as soon as possible for Kinder 2022, as interviews are currently taking place.

Rainbows Program
We will be offering the Rainbows Program in Term 2. This Program aims to foster emotional resilience in children following experiences of bereavement, loss and family separation.
Children will participate in a weekly session, approximately 30 minutes, in a peer support group of other children with a Rainbows Facilitator, Mrs Jodi Clements. Mrs Clements is a trained and accredited Rainbows Facilitator and staff member of our school. The program has a total of 12 sessions.
If you wish for your child to participate in this program or would like further information please contact your child's class teachers or the school office.

Tasmanian Premier's Reading Challenge - (Monday April 26 - Friday July 2)
Students from Prep to Year 6 are challenged to make reading part of their day and read 10 books in 10 weeks. Students have received a reading log book and book mark. Once completed, logs can be handed to their teacher or Mrs Marshall in the Library. All students participating in the Challenge  go into the draw to win a school visit from Hawka.  Students who complete the Challenge will receive a certificate from the Premier and go into the draw to win a $100 book voucher.

Fencing Works at OLOL
A black mesh fence has been installed around the school. The only access to the school from the Steele Street Carpark is now via the main avenue. The fence will provide added safety for our students. Once the project is completed (we are presently waiting on a gate), we are going to trial locking the school in the evenings and on weekends for one month. This is to try to reduce the vandalism and foreign objects being left in the playground outside of school hours. If this is unsuccessful in reducing misuse and damage to the school we will return to leaving the gates open.

Fire Education
Commencing June 7 our school will be hosting Firefighter Craig from Tasmania Fire Service (TFS) to present a Home Fire Safety Program to our Prep to Grade 6 students.  Kindergarten students, whilst not receiving a structured lesson, can expect a visit from the
firefighter who will leave some free fun activities for the students to complete.  The age appropriate program is designed to raise fire awareness in children and includes fun in class activities, videos, activity books, giveaways and a new kid’s website www.tfskids.com.au.  Parents and other family members are also encouraged to participate by reading the information and assisting your child with the after school activities.  The TFS aims to deliver appropriate fire safety education to every primary school child in
Tasmania and is part of the TFS’s ongoing commitment to create a fire safe Tasmania.

COVID 19 Update
Contract Tracing & TAS app
Visitors such as parents and carers can enter the school for up to 15 minutes before having to provide contact tracing details. If parents are volunteering at school, meeting with staff or attending events they must Check in using the TAS App.

Please see the information below about how to download the TAS App.

Tasmanians and visitors are required to use the Check in TAS App when they visit a range of business, organisations and events. This will help to keep ourselves, our loved ones and our community safe.
If you do not have a smartphone or are unable to use one, others in your group can check in for you on their device or staff at the premises will be able to record your contact information on their device or with pen and paper.
The free Check In TAS App is available for download from the Google Play Store and Apple App Store.
Please go to https://coronavirus.tas.gov.au/check-in-tas/information-for-the-community for more information.
School Events
Unfortunately, due to the size of the church and school gym we are not able to have parents at Whole School Prayer or Assemblies. This is due to COVID social distancing requirements of adults in these spaces. Whole School Prayer and Assemblies will continue to be live streamed for families to watch.
Social Distancing
Reminder that all adults must observe the 1.5m separation whilst on the school site.

Medical Students
If your Child suffers from Asthma, the Office requires Asthma Medical Plans that are signed and provided by a Doctor for 2021. Please provide to the Office if required.  All other Medical plans need to be for the current year.  Could current medical plans be bought into the office as soon as possible please.
