MrS seagar's  Reflection

principal

Your culture, which shows the lasting genius and dignity of your race, must not be allowed to disappear. Do not think that your gifts are worth so little that you should no longer bother to maintain them. Share them with each other and teach them to your children. Your songs, your stories, your paintings, your dances, your languages, must never be lost.
Pope Francis 27th Nov 2016; From Pope Francis’ message to Australia’s Indigenous Community where he quoted Saint John Paul II words from his 1986 visit in Alice Springs.
Welcome everyone to Week 7.

It was my privilege to sit in on lessons with Aunty Dawn Blazley and Grade 6 students last Monday and Tuesday. As Aunty Dawn talked to us and we listened, I became very aware of the Tasmanian history as told by an Aboriginal person with ancestors who lived through and then told these oral stories.

Aunty Dawn Blazley is a Tasmanian artist who hosts 'inner circles' across Tasmania to get non-Aboriginal people talking about truth-telling and reconciliation whilst sharing her history and life in Tasmania. With the OLOL students Aunty Dawn told some of her story and then the students responded in painting.

Aunty Dawn’s parents grew up on Cape Barren and were removed during the times of the assimilation policy. The assimilation policy was a policy of absorbing Aboriginal people into white society through the process of removing children from their families. Her parents moved around Tasmania as her father sought work as a wood cutter after the mine at Le Froy closed.  Aunty dawn was born at Pipers Brook and eventually lived in Invermay.  She spoke to the students of Wybaleena, where Aunty Dawn said that her ancestors were forced off their land to Flinders Island between 1831 and 1835 and had to live a really tough and deprived life, away from their origins, their traditions and their customs.

Aunty Dawn determined, as a young girl, to make the best she could of her life and in her sixties qualified with two master’s degrees – a Bachelor of Contemporary Art and then Community Trauma and Violence with Community Recovery degrees.  As a young girl Aunty Dawn worked as a servant at Scotch Oakburn College and later working in the Tasmania Education Department, the Aboriginal Legal Service, Missing Persons in Victoria, Drug and Alcohol Services, to name a few of her roles.

It was a privilege to sit, listen, learn and appreciate Aunty Dawn’s story.

Thank you Aunty Dawn.

Aunty Dawn shared her paintings and their meanings with the students and then supported the students to create their own response to their discussion time.
In the new world that is emerging for you, you are being called to live fully human and Christian lives, not to die of shame and sorrow. But you know that to fulfil your role you need a new heart. You will already feel courage rise up inside you when you listen to God speaking to you in these words of the Prophets: "Do not be afraid for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name, you are mine. Do not be afraid, for I am with you.
John Paul II 1986 Alice Springs.

RE NEWS

This week we celebrate Christ the King
sourced from https://www.liturgyhelp.com/calendar/date/2021Nov21/0/RefGreSun
Jesus is declared a king in the Gospels and that is what leads us to the Feast of Christ the King. However, Jesus’ intention is not to claim a position of power and authority. When we think back to Jesus’ teachings about the kingdom of God, we recall that he declares the people of highest status to be lowest in the Kingdom of God. It is the poor, the sick, the outcast, the children and the widows who will hold the highest places in the Kingdom of God. In a kingdom like that, what does it mean to declare oneself king? It is about the Kingship of Christ as the "Prince of Peace". For Jesus Christ reigns over the minds of individuals by His teachings, in their hearts by His love, in each one's life by the living according to His law and the imitating of His example.

2022 Student Class Allocation Letters
After many weeks of discernment by teachers and leadership, classes for 2022 have been decided.  In creating these classes the needs of all students have been considered.  These needs include: academic, social and emotional, spiritual, physical and medical.  I ask that you trust these final decisions and encourage your children to think positively about the class they are in for 2022.  We have attempted to accomodate parent requests but at times in the complexity of meeting all students’ needs this was not possible.  Be assured that your child will have the best possibility to learn, in the class assigned to them and we will continue to work in partnership with you in 2022.  This year we will be communicating your child's 2022 Class via Compass. You will receive a generic email on Tuesday 30th November with the class group and teacher's name for 2022. There will be one email per child.

MerseyLink - Bus Fare Increase
The Department of State Growth – Passenger Transport has advised that effective January 2022 the Student/Child cash fare will increase from $1.80 to $1.90. Students  catching a dedicated school bus can purchase a sheet of 10 tickets for $15.20 which  is a saving of 20 percent.

The Smartcard discounted fare will also increase from $1.44 to $1.52. Smartcards  are only available to those students who travel on a public bus.
Some students are eligible for free travel using a Student Bus Pass. Students can  check or renew their eligibility by visiting www.transport.tas.gov.au/student
Since 2017 the Tasmanian Government’s policy has been to increase the student  fare by ten cents every second year, where an increase is supported by the  Consumer Price Index (CPI).
There has not been a student fare increase since 2019 because the fare increase  scheduled for 2021 was deferred due to the impacts of COVID-19 on the economy.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Merseylink, phone: 6427 7626.

Collection of Children
Can parents please make contact with the school if there are people, relatives or friends that are not permitted to collect children or if they come on site is a concern for families.

Medical Students
If your Child suffers from Asthma, the Office requires Asthma Medical Plans that are signed and provided by a Doctor for 2021. Please provide to the Office if required.  All other Medical plans need to be for the current year.  Could current medical plans be bought into the office as soon as possible please.
