Mr farr's Reflection

Deputy principal

Like a branch that sprouts from a stump, one day someone from David's family will become King.
Isaiah 11:1
Welcome to Week 5.

During this cycle of our School Prayer focus (Primary students this week, Early Years next week) we are contining to prepare for the coming season of Advent.  This is somewhat ironic as Advent itself is a season of waiting and preparation!

Through this preparation for Advent we have explored a Godly Play story in our previous School Prayer that told the story of how the Israelites were waiting, for many generations, for the birth of the Messiah.  In this cycle we explore this further by using the Jesse Tree as a way of identifying some of the key people throughout our Bible that emerge as prophets, leaders or other significant men and women.  These significant people are all descendants of Jesus, going back many generations, all of whom were waiting and preparing for the birth of the Messiah.  They didn't know when or where it would happen, nor did they know who it would be, but their faith in God led them to their belief that the saviour would come.

Part of our Charism at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School is 'Trust in God'.  This is a challenging concept for our children to understand and can be challenging for adults to understand as well.  For me, it is not about doing nothing and accepting that whatever happens is what will happen as it is God's will, but it is about having faith that, even in the most challenging times, God has a plan for each of us.

Jesus' descendants trusted that God would send His son.  They waited lifetimes for this to occur, generations came and went, but they still held true to that trust and their faith that God's promise of the Messiah would come.

COVID-19 Update

COVID Changes
As you would be aware over the past few months the government has been shifting its COVID-19 management approach from one focused on population health to one of personal responsibility. Recently it was announced that mandatory isolation for persons who test positive for COVID-19 would end on 14th October. Changes have also been made to other requirements such as those for close contacts.

Further to the above and in accordance with advice provided to the education sector by Public Health, please be advised that our COVID-19 settings for term 4 are:
  1. Staff or students who test positive for COVID-19 are no longer required to undergo mandatory isolation.
  2. It is a Catholic Education Tasmania (CET) requirement that staff or students who test positive and who display acute COVID related symptoms are not to enter a school until their symptoms have gone or have significantly resolved e.g. they have not had a fever (or signs of fever such as chills or night sweats) for at least 24 hours.
  3. Requirements for close contacts such as mask wearing when outside the home no longer apply.
  4. Staff or students with cold or flu symptoms should stay home and test using a rapid antigen test for two consecutive days. If the person tests negative on successive days for COVID-19 and their symptoms are mild e.g. a runny nose but no coughing or sneezing, then it is OK for the person to be at school.
  5. Staff and students who test positive for COVID-19 but who are asymptomatic can enter a school.
  6. Staff who are asymptomatic and who look after high-risk students should either stay away from school for 5 working days or wear a mask for 5 working days.
  7. Registration of positive tests, whilst no longer required, is recommended particularly for those persons who may wish to access health services such as COVID anti-viral treatments and COVID @ home.
  8. The provision of rapid antigen tests to staff and students on request is to continue.
  9. It is a Public Health requirement that staff and students who test positive shall not enter any listed high-risk settings (hospitals, residential aged care etc) until 7 days after they test positive.
  10. With the onset of warmer weather opportunities to maximise natural ventilation of indoor areas should be pursued.
  11. Continue to promote the ‘stay away if unwell’ message, personal hygiene and to wipe down frequently touched surfaces with soapy water or disinfectant once per day.

Thank you for your support and co-operation.

The Feast of Christ the King
The Feast Day of Christ the King, also called Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, is a feast celebrated in the Catholic Church in honour of Jesus Christ as Lord of all creation. The feast day was originally established by Pope Pius XI in 1925
to respond to a world that was rejecting Christ and was being dominated by secularism.

Making Jesus Real
Marty and Mitch are on the road again, engaging with schools for the support of Year 6 students who are preparing to make the move to secondary education.
The key messages are:
  • that this is a new little step in life;
  • there are many misconceptions about high school;
  • asking questions to clarify understandings is really important;
  • attitude is everything;
  • you can commit to high standards of behavioural and learning goals and can work towards them step by step;
  • there are new friends just waiting for you;
  • hang with the eagles (who fly) and not with the turkeys (who scratch in the dust)
Throughout the remainder of the year we ask that you keep the Grade 6 students in your prayers and give them a little bit of extra time, understanding and encouragement.

Advent Family Mass

We have had many students suffering from the symptoms of hay fever over the last few weeks. If your child currently takes medication for hay fever, it is a good idea to treat them prior to coming to school in the morning.

Policy in Focus

In our Policy in Focus section we are sharing the Tasmanian Catholic Education Commission policy - Outdoor Play and Learning Policy.  This policy was approved by the Tasmanian Catholic Education Commission on 24 July 2018, and came into effect 27 July 2018.
The purpose of this policy is to support the provision and use of play spaces within our schools and to encourage positive learning experiences outside of the classroom.  The intent of the Policy is to ensure all parties are aware of their obligations in providing inspiring play spaces and rich outdoor learning experiences to enable students to grow and develop to their full potential in accordance with our Gospel values while ensuring the safest possible environment for those experiences.  A key aim of the Policy is to reinvigorate play spaces as areas for learning and adventure with reasonable and appropriately identified, managed risk-taking whilst ensuring Work Health and Safety (WHS) requirements are met.

We encourage you to read through and explore the policy.
