Mrs seagar's Reflection

principal

Joy is a gift from God.  It fills us from within.
Pope Francis (2013)
My humanity is bound up in yours, for we can only be human together!
Desmond Tutu
Welcome everyone to Week 9 of Term 4

Third Week of Advent

As we are in the 3rd week of Advent, Joy and also Patience come to mind.  Joy in the birth of a new child in very humble circumstances!  This lack of pretension followed Jesus throughout his life.  Patience as we wait for better times;  especially relevant in the times we are experiencing around our world today (war, famine, pandemic, floods and fire threat…). Patience to do all we can with what we have for our Earth and for each other; one step at a time.

The third Sunday of Advent is December 11, 2022. Called “Gaudete Sunday,” or the “Shepard’s Candle” meaning rejoice, a pink candle on the Advent wreath represents this Sunday. At Mass, you'll also see priests and deacons in pink vestments, leading us to await the birth of Jesus joyfully.

A reading from the letter of St James 5: 7-10:
You also must be patient; do not lose heart, the Lord’s coming will be soon.
Be patient, brothers, until the Lord’s coming. Think of a farmer: how patiently he waits for the precious fruit of the ground until it has had the autumn rains and the spring rains! You too have to be patient; do not lose heart, because the Lord’s coming will be soon. Do not make complaints against one another, brothers, so as not to be brought to judgement yourselves; the Judge is already to be seen waiting at the gates. For your example, brothers, in submitting with patience, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord.

In today's letter from St James the metaphor of waiting for rain is given to us as a way of understanding what it was like to wait for Christ. It is a potent image for Advent. In this season each year we remember that humanity waited through a long, dry and exhausting period for the sign of new life in Jesus.

Advent reminds us that by welcoming Christ we have an obligation to care for all his children. Everywhere is our back yard because that’s where our brothers and sisters live. May we gain from Christ this Christmas the generosity to see that the desert is meant to bloom for all people everywhere, not just a few of us lucky to live in an oasis.
Richard Leonard SJ. https://www.liturgyhelp.com/calendar/date/2022Dec11/0/HomRiLen

What gives you joy during this Advent season?
What opportunities do you have to bring joy to someone who needs it?

We can be ridiculously generous to others because God in Jesus has been lavishly good to us and our goodness remains a most powerful sign of God's salvation that is always seen in deeds not words.  We are Jesus’ hands, feet and voice on Earth.  Our actions speak volumes and as Mary Mackillop said: “We must teach more by example that word.”
“The point of our existence is that together we co-create a world of unconditional loving.” (Diarmuid O’Murchu)
“We are radically connected in the world. We are radically responsible for the world!” (Ilia Delio, OSF)

COVID-19 Update

COVID Changes

Recently Public Health provided CET with the following advice:
  • The level of illness experienced due to infection by one of the new sub variants of Omicron is no more severe than that for the BA5 variant (the term 2 & 3 dominant variant).
  • Children are at a very low risk of being impacted by COVID infection.
  • The predicted peak for the current increase in cases is expected to occur in the Xmas holidays (see graph below).
  • The stay home if unwell has been shown to be the most effective control in a school environment.
  • Schools should encourage persons who have visible symptoms of a respiratory illness to stay home and take a RAT.
  • Positive RAT results should be registered with Public Health.
  • Continue to supply RATs on request.
  • Persons who are COVID positive but asymptomatic can attend schools.
  • Mask wearing by adults is a personal choice. Mask wearing indoors for 7 days after testing positive for COVID is recommended. It is good practice for those who are immunocompromised to wear a mask in situations where they cannot socially distance.
  • In pleasant weather, encourage the opening of windows.
  • Public Health does not expect that the current settings for schools will change prior to the end of term 4.
  • The measures set out in CET's COVID-19 Safety Plan V16 still apply.

Thank you for your support and co-operation.

Third Sunday of Advent - Gaudette Sunday
In the Gospel Mt 11:2-11 John asks, ‘Are you the one who is to come?’
The third Sunday of Advent was traditionally known as Gaudete Sunday. The word, gaudete, (pronounced gow-day-tay) is from Latin and means Rejoice! The name was given to this Sunday because the entrance antiphon for the day is: ‘Rejoice in the Lord always; again I say, rejoice! The Lord is near.’ When Advent was observed as a more penitential season, this third Sunday was a break from the sombre mood and was more celebratory. The rose-coloured candle in the Advent wreath and rose-coloured vestments convey a mood of joy and celebration.

St Vincent De Paul Christmas Appeal - Thank you
We would like to extend our deepest gratitude to you and your families for the empathy, generosity and community spirit you have shown towards the St. Vincent De Paul Christmas Appeal. The call was put out a few weeks ago and it was so pleasing to see the response of the Community.
This week our donations are being collected and taken to our St Vincent de Paul branches at Latrobe and East Devonport.  The staff of St Vincent de Paul are grateful for the support of our schools, your donations have changed lives for the better and have put a smile on the face of those who need it most.
A big thank you and God Bless.

Policy in Focus

In our Policy in Focus section we are sharing the Tasmanian Catholic Education Commission policy - Outdoor Play and Learning Policy.  This policy was approved by the Tasmanian Catholic Education Commission on 24 July 2018, and came into effect 27 July 2018.
The purpose of this policy is to support the provision and use of play spaces within our schools and to encourage positive learning experiences outside of the classroom.  The intent of the Policy is to ensure all parties are aware of their obligations in providing inspiring play spaces and rich outdoor learning experiences to enable students to grow and develop to their full potential in accordance with our Gospel values while ensuring the safest possible environment for those experiences.  A key aim of the Policy is to reinvigorate play spaces as areas for learning and adventure with reasonable and appropriately identified, managed risk-taking whilst ensuring Work Health and Safety (WHS) requirements are met.

We encourage you to read through and explore the policy.
