Welcome everyone to Week 4.
Our Lady of Lourdes is and has been for many years now (at least 20) a WEST School. WEST stands for Welcome, Encourage, Sorry and Thanks. This acronym has been part of Making Jesus Real: an education program used at OLOL and many Catholic schools. One of its vision points is to provide a holistic approach so that all who encounter the MJR philosophy will be inspired by the words, actions and teaching of Jesus Christ. My own children, now adults still remember the WEST acronym and what it means. It is part of their gained knowledge and understanding of how to make Jesus real in daily life.
At OLOL I find that our students and community live out being WEST daily and this is a credit to the parents of our students, the teachers as well as the receptiveness of the students to transfer their learning to daily actions.
I wish to welcome many new families to OLOL community and thank the staff and students for making them feel very welcome. We have had over a dozen new families join our community since Term 4 last year. If you see a new face, please give a friendly wave or welcoming smile.
Showing encouragement to others at OLOL is part of the very essence of how we operate. Giving others support, confidence and hope generates healthy relationships and lifts wellbeing. This encouragement needs to be genuine, tangible and leading others to self-evaluation, self-motivation, confidence and resilience. Encouragement needs to be specific to the task, effort and achievements and not just a ‘well done’, which does not allow for any self-growth.
When saying sorry at OLOL we require the students to understand that they are apologising for a specific action which needs to be sincere. In doing so know they are taking responsibility for their behaviours and committing to making amends to these going forward. This is a healing moment for the recipient as well as forward step to self-improvement for the perpetrator.
Finally the thanks aspect of WEST, allows those who express gratitude to feel more positive emotions, relish good experiences, improve their health, and build strong relationships. Not to mention the pleasure thanks gives the recipient. As we know there is much written today about the benefits of a daily practice of gratitude.
Who would have thought that this WEST acronym, created so long ago would continue to be very relevant and pertinent to our everyday life and school education. If we are to love one another as Jesus commands, then WEST is a great starting point for tangible behaviours that we can live by each day.
Thank you to Peter Mitchell who created this and so much more in the Making Jesus Real education program those years ago.

How are we staying covid safe?
Further to the letter parents and carers received on Tuesday 25th January from Catholic Education Tasmania, click here to access, outlines of further contextual arrangements for Our Lady of Lourdes, in our attempt to place in mitigation factors with the Omicron Variant of the Coronavirus, for the next 5 weeks.
Persons with COVID-19 symptoms must isolate for a minimum of 7 days. If the person still has symptoms on day 7 then they must continue their isolation for a further 3 days.
PLEASE NOTIFY THE SCHOOL OFFICE IF YOU CHILD RETURNS A POSITIVE COVID—19 TEST.
As of this week, parents and staff are no longer required to use the Check in TAS App when entering the school premises. You will notice that these signs are beginning to be removed from the walls of our school. However, be aware that the Government has flagged the possibility of checking in being required again in the future.

- All classrooms are cleaned daily as required by our Catholic Education Tasmania, Covid Plan, created with direction from the Department of Health.
- High touch services, including electronic equipment are cleaned daily through out the school.
- In a notified case of Covid-19 a deeper clean tasks place. This clean can take up to 2 hours and we are aiming to do these as soon as we know, so that classes can return to their learning space in a timely manner.
- Our school cleaners have been employed for more hours each week and are available to clean from early morning to late afternoon. I thank our Cleaners: Sue Moody and Lynette Kenny, for their flexibility and availability in serving our school community during these demanding times.
- Interactions between ECE and Primary Students have been kept to a minimum due to the planned separation of these students (Early Childhood and Primary) at beginning of the day, during the day in moving to Specialist lessons and end of the day exits.
- All windows and doors are open during learning time to allow for ventilation

Sacramental News
We congratulate and offer our prayers and support to the children who are celebrating the Sacraments of Initiation in the Catholic Church. Please remember there are two programs running at the same time which are Reconciliation and Confirmation.

Starting with Ash Wednesday on the 2nd March the liturgical season of Lent is celebrated with 40 days of prayer, almsgiving and fasting. The season replicates the 40 days that Jesus spent in the desert before he began his teaching ministry. Lent is a time for strengthening our faith, a time to reflect on who we are and where we are going just as Jesus did in the desert. It is a time of quietness and prayer, a time of penance and meditation, a time to become aware of our strengths and weaknesses. To prepare for the season of Lent we celebrate Shrove Tuesday.
Shrove Tuesday
Shrove Tuesday is the day before Ash Wednesday which marks the beginning of Lent. Shrove Tuesday is a day when people traditionally used up all the extra food in their cupboards such as fat, eggs, milk and flour in preparation for the 40 days of fasting during Lent. It is believed that fasting helps to free us of earthly distractions and open our hearts fully to Jesus.
Ash Wednesday
On Ash Wednesday we receive the mark of the ashes. The ashes are the blessed burnt palms from the previous Palm Sunday. The Ashes are a symbol of repentance and are placed on the forehead of Catholics around the world. The Ashes are a physical sign that Lent has begun. Ash Wednesday is a day of abstinence (going without meat) and fasting. Lent is a time to rediscover the meaning of life and prioritise what is important in how we live our lives. We try to simplify our lives (fasting), take time out to reflect and pray (prayer), and listen and respond to those in need (almsgiving). Prayer, fasting and almsgiving are concrete ways in which we can demonstrate our relationship with God. It is a time where we focus more fully on making good and better choices. We begin the journey of Lent to become more like Jesus.

High Levels of LEarning For All
Enabling, Engaging & Enriching Learning
At Our Lady of Lourdes we have multiple layers the learning - in all contexts and areas - of our students is our priority. This learning might be social, behavioural, academic, emotional etc, but we strive to meet the needs of our students by supporting their growth from whatever point they are at.
As many of you would be aware, this year we have moved away from our Grade Teacher Model and have developed a multi-faceted model of support and intervention. Over the coming weeks we will take a more in depth look into each of the roles, and humans that fill them, within our new model.

TARGETED TEACHING TEAM
Our Targeted Teaching Team is made up of 3 teachers who each work across 2 year levels each Monday and Tuesday. During this time these teachers are working directly with students whom the classroom teachers and the targeted teaching team member have identified through data analysis and professional conversation as requiring further teaching to:

Each Monday & Tuesday it is common to see Mrs Cutting, Mrs Lane or Mrs Evans working with a range of student groupings, inside and outside of classrooms; enabling, engaging and enriching the learning of these students in a highly targeted, data driven manner.
- Clarify misunderstandings
- Reteach particular concepts etc that may not have been grasped
- Enrich the learning for students who show high potential in a particular area / concept

Seesaw & Online Feedback at OLOL

This year we are utilising Seesaw across our entire school as our Learning Management System. A Learning Management System allows us to provide online learning and assessment opportunities for all of our students to enable, engage and enrich the learning for all our students, and, concurrently, strengthen our partnership with you, the parent, by enabling you to access / view the learning that is happening within classrooms.
By now you will have received an invitation to join Seesaw Families by connecting to your child's Learning Journal via the QR code and sign up (see image to the right). If you have not received or completed this sign up, we strongly encourage you to do so ASAP. Once connected to your child's Seesaw account you will be able to receive notifications when they complete new learning and assessment opportunities within the system, receive notifications from your child's teacher regarding the learning that is upcoming / reflections on the week gone, and view feedback that your child's teacher may provide for your child on their work. |

Another key way we are utilising Seesaw is to provide parents with the key foci for the current Maths Units focusing on Number, that are taking place in across each grade. This will take the form of a Single Point Rubric. A single point rubric is a way for teachers to highlight the Learning Intentions and Success Criteria for the unit and then provide students feedback on how well they are achieving that success criteria, how to improve in their learning and where to next in their learning. Students are also able to use Single Point Rubrics to self assess and determine their own levels of understanding. In this way we are striving to create clarity around what is being taught and how well it is being learnt for the student, the teacher and you, the parent.
Please be aware that Seesaw does not replace Compass. Any notifications regarding student absence, attendance, parent teacher conferences, student reports etc will continue to go through Compass. Weekly updates regarding what is taking place in the classroom will now be posted via Seesaw.

COVID-19 Update at OLOL
This week we have had 22 positive COVID-19 test results in the school. Classes in the affected grades have been notified.
You must notify the school if your child tests positive to COVID-19. Please to this as soon as possible. Messages can be left on the school's answering machine after hours - you don't need to wait for the office to open.
Please include the date of your child's positive test result in the message. This allows us to communicate to families and staff in a timely manner and arrange for the classrooms to have an extra COVID clean.
OLOL is following all the requirements for managing these cases as advised by the Department of Health and Catholic Education Tasmania

It is important that all school communities are aware that travel on school bus services will be subject to the Code from the commencement of 2022 school year.
Collection of Children
Can parents please make contact with the school if there are people, relatives or friends that are not permitted to collect children or if they come on site is a concern for families.
