MRs seagar'S  Reflection

Principal

Welcome everyone to Week 10.

We wish to thank as well as congratulate all of the members of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School Community.

This term has been an excellent term of learning. In all classes explicit instruction is enabling all students to learn to high levels.

The school is now in its second year of InitiaLit from Prep to Grade 2 and the results are very impressive. There is consistency of  high student progress from Kinder to Grade 2 in Literacy. Our targeted Literacy intervention in Grades 3-6 is enabling students to have a stronger literacy toolkit to be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. These groups have occurred this term each morning on a regular basis.  It is a credit to all of our staff that by 9:15, after Daily PE, students are busy learning and engaging productively with their teachers.

Celebrating Harmony day at Our Lady of Lourdes was a visible reminder of how diverse our school is and the value and respect we give to all peoples in our community, so that we are truly inclusive.

We wish to thank all staff for the wrap-around support they provide, organise and give to students and families: 1:1 Support, Counselling, Allied Health Support, Care Team Meetings, Chaplain Support and Advocacy as well as creating emotionally literate students through our classroom teaching programs with a focus on resilience this year. A part of this resilience scaffolding is Our Lady of Lourdes’ clear behaviour expectations which support and teach students how to make safe, respectful and responsible choices. Our desire is for students to leave Our Lady of Lourdes as well educated, confident, well balanced young people.

Thank you to all parents and carers who continue to work in partnership with us at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School, in the education of children.

As we all enter this Easter Break, we wish all families a restful, safe and holy time.

Carol Seagar, Stewart Farr, Eve Gratton

Beyond Blue - Building resilience in children
Resilience is important for children’s mental health. Children with greater resilience are better able to manage stress, which is a common response to difficult events.  Below is a link to useful information on building resilience in children provided by Beyond Blue.

RE NEWS

Palm Sunday Marks the Beginning of Holy Week.
Last Sunday students from Our Lady of Lourdes participated in the celebration of Palm Sunday at the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes and at Whole School Prayer this week the students listened to the Gospel Reading Matthew 21:1-11 (Jesus Enters Jerusalem).
The students then pondered these questions:

• I wonder how Jesus felt when the crowd wanted Him to be their king and shouted Hosanna to Jesus?
• I wonder who the people were who shouted “ Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord?”
• I wonder why Jesus the King rode on a donkey instead of a horse?

The students were reminded that Jesus was a humble person, so entering on a donkey, which was also a sign of peace.  He was fulfilling the Old Testament prophecies (Zechariah 9:9):
“Rejoice greatly, O daughter Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter Jerusalem! Lo, your king comes to you, triumphant and victorious is he; humble and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.”

This Holy Week we remember how the week began and ended for Jesus. A week of welcome, then pain and suffering; and finally his resurrection on Easter Sunday. Jesus’ Life, Death and Resurrection captured in one special week.  I wonder how are we his disciples in the world today?

Outdoor Play and Learning
Since 2014 Tasmanian Catholic Education has supported schools in offering children creative play and learning within our school outdoor spaces through our Risk and Adventure Policy.

In Term 2 we will reinstate Loose Parts Play into the playground at lunch times.

Examples of loose parts items students will use:  Logs, sticks, milk crates, ropes, tyres, plastic cable reels, tarps, pipes/tubing/hose and witches hats.

It is timely to restate some purposes of this policy, being:
  • Support learning and creative play with reasonable levels of risk-taking permitted
  • Offer age appropriate activities and items to encourage development of gross motor, collaboration and risk assessment skills
  • Enable children to extend their physical, intellectual and social capabilities
  • Ensure activities are assessed for suitability, and if so to proceed with appropriate safety adjustments and staff supervision levels in place.

We will continue to monitor and evaluate Loose Parts Play in the playground.

Policy in Focus

This week in our 'Policy in Focus' section of the Newsletter we have attached our Uniform Policy.  This policy outlines the expectations that we have for our students in regards to the wearing of their school uniform.  We are currently having a focus on 'doing the small things with pride'.  This means boys keeping their shirts tucked in, girls wearing the appropriate headbands, jewellery and nail polish, students with shoulder length hair keeping it tied back and the wearing of black, polishable school shoes.
