Schooling during Term 2 will see our children engaging in Learning@Home as requested by Catholic Education Tasmania in alliance with the Tasmanian Government. This will support all members of our Tasmanian community to minimise their risk of contracting the coronavirus and COVID-19 disease.  Where possible, students will commence Learning@Home in Term 2, recognising that some students may still attend the school site when their learning can’t be supported or supervised at home.  These students will also be working from the Learning@Home platform.

As a school staff we feel we are in a positive space in regards to providing explicit teaching, learning opportunities and resources to support your child’s learning at home via our online learning platforms of:
  • Educa in Kindergarten
  • Seesaw in Prep - Grade 3
  • Google Classroom in Grades 4 - 6

Learning@Home will see our children engaging with learning via their relevant online learning platform (and in some cases hard copies of activities/templates), completing work in workbooks or on a digital device, and submitting their learning via the online learning platform.  Teachers will provide explicit teaching videos, feedback specifically related to student work and opportunities for students to communicate, ask questions of and touch base with their teachers in real time, online settings.  Teachers will be providing this range of learning at home resources to children regularly throughout the week.  We ask that children engage with the provided learning opportunities each day, as best they can.  We also ask that you, as parents, will join us as teachers in being mindful of ensuring our children do not spend large amounts of time focused on a screen.  Our general rule of thumb is that there should be no more than 40% of time spent consistently engaging with a screen.  We will do our best to ensure the learning opportunities provided reflect this.

We acknowledge that there will be challenges for many of us as parents to support our children to engage in the learning provided and that our children will engage and undertake the learning provided to varying degrees.  This is OK.  Each family situation is different, especially now during this pandemic.

We want you to understand that our view is that you are not your child’s teacher and we are not expecting you to be.  We ask that you support your child to engage in learning at home through the online and offline materials provided as best you can and in a manner and time frame that works for your family.

Although our current reality is stressful, concerning and rapidly changing we are presented with an opportunity to spend time with our children.  We encourage you at any time during your week or day to:
  • Take your children outdoors
  • Read to them
  • Let them read
  • Let them pursue any of their interests as these often are learning opportunities and become fantastic projects
  • Let them be creative with their learning – painting, writing, drawing, dance, drama, verbal retells, seeing their spelling word patterns in other media, engaging in play and play-based learning, using number knowledge in real life (baking, counting flowers, grouping objects in their room etc)
  • Play board games together
  • Construct cubbies, forts, creatures and robots out of boxes
  • Above all talk with your children as much as possible

If you have questions regarding the learning being provided we ask that you contact your child’s teacher directly through their online learning platform or via email.  Your child’s teachers will get back to you when they can and are not ‘on tap’ to answer all questions immediately.  We also ask that you constrain your questions and emails to teachers between 9 o’clock and 3 o’clock each day.

Our children's wellbeing, growth and learning are the focus of all staff here at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School.  In this challenging time, rest assured that we are here to support you, the parents, as best we can to ensure our children continue to grow into the best version of themselves.  We welcome any questions or concerns you may have regarding Learning@Home during Term 2.
